Calais Hypermarket - what to buy?

TheClitterati · 28/07/2019 07:34

I don't really drink Smile

Going to be popping quickly (I know) into hypermarket before getting le Shuttle tomorrow.

I'm avoiding wheat, don't really drink. Can do cheese. Would like some healthy French stuff, possibly skin care, and hair care. I'm clueless.

What should I buy?

Tomatoes. Lots of variety and the speciality ones can be cheaper than the UK. And of course garlic.
Bouquet garni herb bunches

Doubleraspberry · 28/07/2019 08:54

Boudin noir.

justilou1 · 28/07/2019 11:17

Stupidly looked up boudin noir. It’s all yours!

ThePhoenixRises · 28/07/2019 11:21

The hot chocolate granules, can be used with hot or cold milk and eaten straight from the tub with a spoon Grin

caudalie

Chartreuser · 28/07/2019 11:46

And yes to the water aerosols, they are a fraction of the price

Doubleraspberry · 28/07/2019 12:14

Lovely big French lettuces. We’re lucky to have them in our local farm shop now but before that I’d only come across them for reasonable prices in France.

Doubleraspberry · 28/07/2019 12:15

Boudin noir is French black pudding - much softer in texture though, like Spanish morcilla. It’s not for everyone!

justilou1 · 28/07/2019 12:29

I’ve moved back to Australia and this got me all nostalgic. I thought I’d see how much the duck in a can costs here...
HOLY DUCK!!!
It’s $128!!!
Buy lots of that and post it here please!!!

TheSquatLobster · 28/07/2019 13:00

Cans of old-fashioned liquid beeswax furniture polish. Gives a beautiful shine, especially on raw wood, and smells divine. And wooden floor cleaner with beeswax in. Both dead cheap.

I lived in Brittany for several years & as soon as I use either of these I'm back there!

TheClitterati · 29/07/2019 08:14

@ALittleBitAlexis happy shopping & see you later!

Well I only had 20 minutes and it was great I had my list.

Got the sausages you all recommended, sourdough, celeriac romoulad, all the cheese, lutti sour sweets, duck in a tin (last minute grab), pâté, and a giant lovely lettuce

Missed the cordials and soap. No time to browse. Need to go back!

Thank you all

You forgot carambar 😍😂

TheSquatLobster · 29/07/2019 17:28

You did well - enjoy!

StarlightLady · 29/07/2019 19:28

With the current exchange rate, it is not a cheap wonderland. To be honest, unless you want a French speciality, l would give the shopping a miss and treat myself to a nice meal in the town centre instead. Then maybe pick up a few French bits in a local shop.

scaryteacher · 29/07/2019 19:36

And there's me getting all excited about going to Tesco and Waitrose when back in UK this weekend just gone...Carrefour is the local supermarket where I am, and it is so dull.

The only thing I can't get in UK are the boxes of Nescafe Cafe Frappe to mix with cold milk for an iced coffee when it's hot.

justilou1 · 30/07/2019 10:34

Just cook the duck for 20 mins at 180.... use the leftover fat for roasting parboiled spuds. You won’t be sorry. (Rosemary, garlic.) Amen.

seventy5days · 30/07/2019 10:37

I now want to go to France Smile

BareBelliedSneetch · 30/07/2019 10:41

Next time:

Danette - you cant get them in the UK. The dark chocolate ones are amazing.

Bacon crisps - there is nothing close in the Uk. I craved them so much through my last pregnancy, and tried every Uk alternative, and NOTHING matched up.

Apericubes. Obvs.

Greengage jam

Roast chicken rilletttes.

justilou1 · 30/07/2019 12:05

I am on the wrong side of the planet

Chartreuser · 31/07/2019 09:52

@BareBelliedSneetch I just bought 7 packets of these www.frenchclick.co.uk/p-4252-benenuts-fritelle-gout-bacon-80g.aspx - they are bacon flavour chipsticks (plus many other things) from a French website that is based in UK (and near me too) that sells many of the things we bring back from France
