Were they reviewed by a doctor. Why did you have them done. Hope you're ok.Flowers

PeoniesarePink · 27/07/2019 20:58

The Hba1c gives a 3 month indication of the amount of glucose in your blood cells. Won't make a jot of difference if you hadn't had breakfast that day.

If you have got Diabetes, it needs treating. Not ignoring.

Harleyisme · 27/07/2019 20:58

No hba1c test your blood and how its beeb for last 3 months which is a good indicator one meal or skipping a meal won't make a difference to the hba1c.

TinyMystery · 27/07/2019 20:58

A random blood glucose could be thrown off by all sorts of factors but HbA1c is an indicator of longer term blood sugars.

Doubleraspberry · 27/07/2019 20:59

Hba1c measures your blood glucose over a three month period. It’s not done as a fasting test so breakfast wouldn’t have any effect on it.

What were your results? Are they borderline? What have you been are the next steps for you?

Some medications can raise blood sugar into diabetic levels, and this then goes down again if the medication stops. Stress and general illness can also raise blood sugar but not sure whether that would take a non-diabetic person’s Hba1c into diabetic levels.

MsAwesomeDragon · 27/07/2019 21:01

Hba1c tests your blood sugar for the previous 12 weeks, so not having breakfast won't affect it.

What were your results? I've recently been diagnosed as type 2 diabetic, and was told your hba1c being over 48 indicates diabetes. My score was miles above that, but I'm hoping I can reverse it and bring those sugars down to "pre-diabetic" results.

EleanorReally · 27/07/2019 21:04

thank you all so much.
this is dh - and he doesnt remember the result but he now has an appointment with a diabetic nurse
I guess I was wrong about the breakfast.

MsAwesomeDragon · 27/07/2019 21:09

The diabetic nurse will give him some advice about controlling his blood sugars, etc. If he's borderline he'll be asked to make some diet and lifestyle changes, and may be offered a diet system on prescription (I was offered SW on prescription, but other places offer other clubs). If his results are higher then he may be put into some medication, most likely to be Metformin, as well as the diet and lifestyle changes.

babysharkah · 27/07/2019 21:35

Has he got risk factors for t2?

EleanorReally · 27/07/2019 21:47

What are the risk factors, he is not obese but he likes French stick and baking cakes

OP posts:
Fantail · 28/07/2019 01:20

Being overweight is certainly a risk factor, but you can develop T2 if you are a healthy weight. Eating sugar doesn’t make you develop it either (but know he’s being diagnosed he should probably remove it from his diet).

Adults can also develop T1 diabetes and have a slower onset.

SeaEagle21 · 28/07/2019 01:31

You both need to educate yourselves about diabetes. Plenty of people get diabetes when they are not obese, and he hasn't got it because he likes French sticks. It's a lot more complicated than that. It would be a good idea if you both went along to see the diabetes nurse so you can understand how it works and how to deal with it.

user87382294757 · 28/07/2019 07:23

I had with done fasting - blood sugars and HB1AC...mine was 36 which they said was normal, as a reference. There are charts online. yes you can get pre diabetes.

MsAwesomeDragon · 28/07/2019 08:55

The diabetes UK website has a lot of useful info so you can get started with learning all about it, even before he sees the diabetes nurse.

EleanorReally · 28/07/2019 09:35

thanks, just seems to be a healthy diet, so not so worrying.

AnnaMagnani · 28/07/2019 09:42

HbA1C measures your sugars over 3 months - so one missed breakfast would be irrelevant.

You can have pre-diabetes picked up on these results - but it can also diagnose actual diabetes.

And you can be T2 diabetic without being obese if your diet is unhealthy which if it is full of cake it may well be. T1 diabetes isn't linked to diet at all - although you would expect him to have been feeling really unwell.

He needs to have his appointment and get his results.

lljkk · 28/07/2019 09:58

What is his actual Hba1c%?
I have impression that there is controversy about the 'prediabetes' category, where the boundaries should be for that.

Doubleraspberry · 28/07/2019 10:22

And you can be T2 diabetic without being obese if your diet is unhealthy which if it is full of cake it may well be.

This is not accurate.

EleanorReally · 28/07/2019 10:34

I read smoking is a culprit

OP posts:
EleanorReally · 28/07/2019 10:34

He actually needs a scan on his gallbladder so could that be related?

I think it is accurate. Obesity is an obvious risk factor for T2 diabetes but you can absolutely get it if you are slim and healthy in other ways. My blood sugar levels are a smidgen off pre-diabetic levels and I have a BMI of about 21 and exercise 4-5 times a week but I eat too much sugar.

RB68 · 28/07/2019 16:25

its misleading though as its not about sugar its about carbs for a start. generally if you are slim and pre or diab then often it is a) hereditary or b) down to other issues e.g. some surgeries and diseases can effect whether you have diabetes

same as those that are obese can help themselves by losing weight but not all diabetes will go away if weight is lost esp if there are also genetic markers etc etc etc
