Sorry, yes, the inaccurate bit is T2 being caused by diet, not that only obese people have it. I was in a hurry but the causes of T2 are complex and I don’t think anyone would claim they are 100% known and understood. Age is a big factor for example - T2 used to be known as old people’s diabetes. Insulin resistance, which can lead to T2, also leads to weight gain so can cause both issues rather than one leading to the other.

Diabetes UK fights quite hard against the ‘sugary food consumption causes T2’ message. Just as gestational diabetes is not caused by diet in pregnancy.

T1 diabetes isn't linked to diet at all - although you would expect him to have been feeling really unwell.

This isn’t necessarily true. Adult onset T1 can be a fast onset ending in hospitalisation. But it can also be a slow onset and misdiagnosed as T2. Thankfully my GP was on to it and referred me to an Endo (my only risk factor was GD).

I think if you are thin and have no other risk factors and can’t control your sugar levels through diet and medication, then it is worth investigating.
