Help am terrified, mid cycle bleeding.

I have had some bleeding today and yesterday. It's brown more then red. Am around middle of my cycle, but it's hard to be precise as my period takes ages to get going (spotting for days before it starts) so hard to pinpoint day one.

I'm almost 44. Smears up to date. Have copper non hormonal coil. Periods regular but lots of spotting before they get going.

I'm terrified. I will go to GP on Monday but in meantime if anyone could give any words of wisdom or comfort I'd be so grateful. I am usually more stoic than this but have had a tough few months and this seems to have tipped me over into terrified.

It’s probably just a hormonal thing. I have had some weird bleeding but nothing was wrong. Just a “weird” cycle.

It might also be that if you’ve had a tough few months your periods might be a bit erratic so I would honestly try not to worry too much about it.

ArtisanBaps · 27/07/2019 10:56

I had this last 2 months age 47. Turns out I have a 1cm uterine polyp which I’m having removed under GA soon . Hopefully nothing serious but do get it checked by GP.

Gertie75 · 27/07/2019 11:01

I'm 44 and have had exactly the same for nearly 12 months, everything is clear and the doctor thinks I'm building up to the perimenopause although hormone tests still aren't confirming it.

Thank you both for replying. It's so nice to get a reply. DH is working so I haven't got anyone to talk to about this and I'm worrying myself silly.

@ArtisanBaps how did you know you had a polyp? Did you have some sort of test?

@OurChristmasMiracle sorry to hear you get it too. I've not had it before so I guess it's worrying me as it's new if you see what I mean.

@Gertie75 I'm sorry to hear you have it to, albeit incredibly relieved so hear it's not anything to worry about in your case. Would it be ok to ask what tests you've had to confirm that it's nothing to worry about?

I didn't know it could be a symptom or the menopause / perimenopause. I did have a google but didn't find anything about that- just major scare stories about cancer.

I had this about 3/4 months ago - was terrified because my sister had just been diagnosed with cervical cancer (an already rough time exacerbated as our mother and other sister both died from cancer in the last 4 years). I'm mid 40s and smears weren't up to date. I cried over my GP who was beyond lovely.

Smear done and was clear. GP thought it could be peri menopause or stress impacting on body.

Am sure your GP will be reassuring but proactive.

I know how easily you can go from rational thinking to panic stations and I wouldn't normally advise symptom checking but as someone who has health anxiety I recognise that in a list of 10 symptoms I focus on the one I have rather than the 9 I don't... I've found reading each symptom aloud and then saying yes or no helps me reset my brain and calm me down. It may not work for others but I share on here just in case.
Flowers and good thoughts

As a GP I see this ALL THE TIME. It's often associated with approaching the menopause. You may have a polyp or fibroid. Do go to your GP, but don't panic. I'd be astonished if it turned out to be cancer.

ArtisanBaps · 27/07/2019 11:32

I went to GP, she did an internal with a speculum, said she could see a polyp . Was referred to a private hospital under NHS so seen within a week or so. She said they might remove it in the clinic. Consultant said same thing but then did internal ultrasound which confirmed that it was inside the uterus rather than outside so would need removal under GA as quite painful.
Will be in on a Thursday and out same day . Advised to rest/off work until Monday and no heavy exercise for 2 weeks.

peoplepleaser1 · 27/07/2019 11:33

@myrtleWilson I'm so sorry to hear about your mother and sister, I hope your other sister is doing well. Thank you for your reassurance. I guess the scary thing is that the main symptom of cervical cancer seems to be bleeding outside of your period, so that has really scared me.

@YouWhoNeverArrived thank you so much Thanks.

Thanks for the further info @ArtisanBaps . Glad you got it sorted.

Could be pre-menopausal. Seriously. Check it out but much much more likely to be hormonal than anything untoward, especially as your smear tests are up to date. x

NoTheresa · 27/07/2019 11:38

Oops, sorry. Should have read the previous replies. I see a doctor had replied!!

Thank you for all the replies. Wish it wasn't Saturday, seems like a long wait until Monday morning.

Could be hormonal, Ive had mid cycle spotting and no obvious reason

pickleface · 27/07/2019 12:28

This also happened to me when I had polyps. Had them out 8 years ago and had no problems since. They diagnosed them via ultrasound which was fairly simple

peoplepleaser1 · 27/07/2019 17:17

I've just met a friend who had a similar issue which her GP put down to stress and suggested just keeping an eye on things.

I'm thinking I should at least ask for a smear test if my GP suggests it's likely to be stress? They are the experts though so I'm not sure? Can stress really cause this?!

Ovulation can cause spotting.

probstimeforanewname · 27/07/2019 18:10

I had this this month (I am 47). I had some ovulation pain and it was midway through (ish, my cycle is all over the place). It has happened a couple of times before in the last few years.

If it starts getting to the point where you feel like you are more or less bleeding all the time, that could be polyps, I had it about 7 years ago.

Most likely explanation is peri-menopause.

peoplepleaser1 · 27/07/2019 18:51

Thank you. I had a transvaginal scan and MRI in January as I had some pelvic pain. I had a large ovarian cyst but luckily it was not sinister and shrank of its own accord. This makes me think it's less likely that I have polyps or fibroids as I'm thinking they would show up on the scan.

I so so hope it's related to the perimenopause .

I get this and have been thoroughly checked out by a gynae and nothing found. Didn't know it could be a peri thing but sounds about right.

Don't panic. I did too and what a waste of time!

Nice to hear from a GP too.

YouWhoNeverArrived · 27/07/2019 19:05

A smear test is a screening test - if you have symptoms you need a diagnostic test. Screening tests are only useful in people with no symptoms. Happy to help Smile

peoplepleaser1 · 27/07/2019 19:29

@YouWhoNeverArrived I'm really sorry but I don't understand what you mean by your last post? I really appreciate your help, but I'm not clear what you mean- would a smear test not be helpful?

OP posts:
YouWhoNeverArrived · 27/07/2019 19:32

Smear tests are for people with no symptoms.

If you have symptoms, you need different tests.

Hope that's clearer.

NoTheresa · 27/07/2019 20:41

How very helpful.
