He loves the animated one but the new one is a PG

It is so so so boring. It’s rubbish.

Save your money. My 7 year old and 10 year old thought it was rubbish. Dull dull dull.

BlueWonder · 25/07/2019 21:47

This is not going to be a popular view but surely a 2 year old shouldn't be static and staring at a screen in a darkened room for 90 mins. I'd buy him a couple of farm animal style toy lions instead and wait a few years for the film.

CalamityJune · 25/07/2019 21:49

My 2yo isn't even interested in The Gruffalo animation. It's all Peppa and Duggee here.

Ha ha ha!

He gets a max of one hour screen time (all screens) per day, often less.

He's been to the pictures three times in his life.

Chill out, @BlueWonder

I would say no. It is really dark in places. Young kids around three were crying around us. They wanted to go home. Go see something else .

sneakypinky · 25/07/2019 21:56

I don't think the original was suitable for a 2 year old. I wouldn't show several Disney films to an under 7.

sneakypinky · 25/07/2019 21:57

But like Jungle Book I think the Jon Favreau versions are targeted at the 30 something's that loved the originals, rather than young children.

Yes! Thank goodness I'm not alone! I normally cry at EVERYTHING but it just left me cold. Been scratching my head at people saying it's amazing, they cried etc.

Danglingmod · 25/07/2019 22:00

A roughly 2 year old and a roughly 4 year old screamed throughout the last half or more of the screening I was at this week. Their parents didn't remove them. Please don't take him.

Mammyloveswine · 25/07/2019 22:29

I took 3.5 year old Ds to see toy story 4... he was bored after 5 minutes!!

Somehow we got through with bribery, 2 toilet trips, too many fruit shoots, lots of sweets and popcorn...

So stressful!

User8888888 · 25/07/2019 23:09

I was debating live action Aladdin for my 3 year old but all the reviews said it was much darker and scarier and not suitable for little ones. I suspect the lion king would be the same as others have confirmed here. To be honest I think the animation is a bit of a stretch for a 2 year old. Mufassa’s death. It is pretty complex for a toddler to grasp.

Happysummer2020 · 25/07/2019 23:10

I would say no for a 2 year old. There are a couple of scary scenes with the hyenas.

I'd say it's only suitable for 4 up.

Armi · 25/07/2019 23:46

Does he actually even confidently know where his own nose is? He’s two. He has years and years to watch this sort of nonsense. He won’t understand it, it may frighten him and it may spoil the film for him in the future (‘Oh, we went to see that when you were tiny and you hated it.’)

Why are folk always desperate to show stuff to kids that they won’t understand? Just wait. They will get it when they are older.

Femodene · 26/07/2019 00:03

What Armi said. He not only won’t be able to enjoy it (as much as one can enjoy gross Disney films about death, can he not watch studio ghibli stuff instead?) but will probably ruin other people’s cinema time too, unless he does actually sit quietly on your lap the whole time, in which case, just watch a film arm home for free. He’d probably enjoy playing with water and brushes in the garden than (not) watching the latest dead-parent offering from disney

At two years old? Your child, your call of course but you did ask for opinions.. I guess this is for convenience (no babysitter?), but regularly taking a toddler to full-length films is really not ideal for them and other cinema-goers, whatever the content.... as a lot of other posters have hinted. It won't kill him of course, but why the rush to grow up so fast when he'd get much more from the experience at about 5+?

00100001 · 26/07/2019 05:42

There's nothing wrong with a 2 yo having been to the cinema 3 times....

Settle down.

squeekywheel · 26/07/2019 06:37

No, it's not for convenience.

Going to the cinema is fun, two year olds are allowed to have fun.

Yes, he sat there nicely.

Yes, he enjoyed it.

Not sure what the issue is?

Seriously, this child has less screen time that most kids.

squeekywheel · 26/07/2019 06:41

@Armi

Why do people consistently underestimate children?

He's two, not stupid.

The Lion King and the Jungle Book are his favourites.

I won't be taking to see the this version of the Lion King as it sounds like they've made it too grown up.

OP posts:
adaline · 26/07/2019 06:45

I don't think the new live-action Disney's are aimed at small children - they're more for older teens and adults who loved the cartoon ones the first time around.

I remember seeing the new Beauty and the Beast when it came out and the 4yo in the row in front of us didn't like it at all "because it wasn't like the Disney one at home".

Binforky · 26/07/2019 06:49

I wouldn't. I took my three who are older to see it 14,11&8 they all love the original but all walked out saying how boring it was. The songs are dull and even though the animation is amazing it's just not got the heart of the original. Even some of the voices just sound flat and lifeless. I was so glad they felt the same as me. The original was my favourite film as a child so I thought I was being over judgemental.

May I also add I was a weird kid who loved scars song the most and so was very angry they have made it into some awful chant.

If you haven't seen it already toy story 4 is great.

HeadsDownThumbsUpEveryone · 26/07/2019 07:04

Isn't that the whole point of Disney doing the live action remakes? They aren't being made for children they are being made for the late 20-30 year olds who grew up with the movies. They are meant to be more grown up as the target audience is grown ups looking for nostalgia.

Pleaser256 · 26/07/2019 07:06

If his favourite films are lion king and jungle book, which would suggest if they are “favourites” he has watched them more than once at the age of 2, then he doesn’t get “max one hour screen per day” - not judging you OP as my 3 year old could easily sit in front of the tv for a few hours if he had his way, but he wasn’t watching full length films until closer to 3 (and even that was maximum 75% of it!)
But I do get the concept of wanting to do more fun things with your kids at that age, especially if it’s your first. I’m loving DS at the age he is now purely for that reason, not every trip feels like a chore anymore and it can actually be quite pleasant!

squeekywheel · 26/07/2019 07:12

Films are an occasional treat, one hour is an average. Some days, no screen time at all....

Amazing idea I know.

OP posts:
00100001 · 26/07/2019 08:07

@Pleaser256

Calm down. A child is allowed to watch films.... and allowed to have favourites....and may have watched them in short bursts.... how do you know that OPs child hasn’t watched watched them in. 30 minute chunks?

Even if he has watched the whole movie in one go.... so what? It’s not even 1hr30m long....

Moodyfoodie · 26/07/2019 08:26

Well going against the grain here but my 2yo loved it and sat through it for the duration. Fwiw he loved the hyenas Grin
It helped that he adores the cartoon and this is basically a frame by frame remake, so it looked familiar to him and he knew what to expect.
