N/C because in the unlikely event anybody knows me here this is very outing, but naice ham, cheeky holiday husband and wife etc.
I am putting together a mix CD for my friend’s daughter’s second birthday- songs that hopefully she’ll enjoy dancing around to when she’s little and grow to love when she’s older.
I’m looking for simple, cheery, clean(ish) classics. So far I’ve got:
Mr Blue Sky by ELO
Starfish and Coffee by Prince
Jump In Line by Harry Belafonte
Octopus’ Garden by The Beatles
Jailhouse Rock by Elvis Presley
It’s Oh So Quiet by Björk
Firecracker by Yellow Magic Orchestra

Would really appreciate any suggestions by clever Mumsnetters as to some lovely pop ditties to include.

ArtichokeAardvark · 25/07/2019 21:57

My 1 year old loves Walking on Sunshine - Katrina and the Waves. He dances around like anything!

WheelieMe · 25/07/2019 22:28

Cha cha slide might be fun for a kid

ugoglenncoco · 25/07/2019 22:45

Wig field - Saturday night

Sclub - reach for the stars

Mr bright side

violetdazed · 25/07/2019 22:46

Wow- I love this idea for my little girl who turns 2 soon. You should sell the end product!! I'd buy!

SudowoodoVoodoo · 25/07/2019 22:50

Half of these are on my running playlist Grin

My DCs love:
Wierd Al, particularly The Saga Begins (star wars)
Queen
Ghostbusters
The Beatles
Uptown funk
Uptown girl
Barbie Girl
Divine Comedy: National Express
Ian Drury: Rythmn stick
Europe: final countdown
Pharrell Williams: happy
Was not was: walk the dinosaur

Generally cheesy catchy pop with clear words is on to a winner.

Apparently there is a window at about 7-10 when children are the right combination of receptive to music and can begin to actually pay attention to it but not too embarassed about their parents' taste and are easily educated/ infĺuenced.

TakemedowntoPotatoCity · 25/07/2019 22:56

Isn't starfish and coffee about drugs?

CaptainCarp · 25/07/2019 23:00

Happy by pharrell (sp?) just because it is literally such a happy song & 1 of the most danced to at parties I go to

Graphista · 25/07/2019 23:03

Little ones tend to love songs with a known dance the cheesier the better so...

The birdy song
Cha cha slide
Saturday night - Whigfield
The twist
Anything by jive bunny
Macarena
The ketchup song
Anything by Black lace but particularly superman and Agadoo
Anything by tight fit
The locomotion
Spice girls - stop
Steps 5,6,7,8
Conga
Ymca
Oops upside your head (outs self as ancient!)

You get the idea - they love learnin the moves and teaching each other.

newnamewhosthis · 25/07/2019 23:14

The absolute fucking torture that is baby shark.

Every adult in the room will want to blow their brains out in unison but kids love it

kierenthecommunity · 25/07/2019 23:14

My DS is another who loved Roar. As did his dad, when he watched it on YouTube, strangely enough

Bang Bang (the Ariana Grande et al version not BA Robertson) is a good positive female one.

JonnyPocketRocket · 25/07/2019 23:16

I made a playlist for my sister's DC recently, aged between 2 and 10. They particularly liked:
Kristen Andreassen: Crayola doesn't make a colour for your eyes
Corrine Bailey Rae: Put your records on
The Avett Brothers: Kick drum heart
Judah and the Lion: Uh-huh! Yeah!
Cosmo Sheldrake: Come along
Neil Diamond: Porcupine pie
Cat Stevens: If you want to sing out, sing out
Beach Boys: Surfin' USA
I did include other female artists too, but they were more lullaby-ish or folky, rather than something to dance around too. If youre open to a few more chilled tracks Django Jones (female vocalist) have some lovely songs for kids (although very listenable by adults too). I also included some of Elizabeth Mitchell's covers of old Woody Guthrie songs, and 10000 Maniacs' "These are days".

Newuseroftheweek · 26/07/2019 01:31

Firework by Katy Perry
Also Roar by her.
Big when I was little by Eliza Doolittle
Defying gravity from glee.
Shake it off. Taylor Swift.
Somebody that I used to know. Goyte
Oops I did it again. Britney
Velvet Elvis. Alex Winston
Brontosaurus. Tkay maidza
We built this city by starship

Some from my slowly developed playlist. It's a great idea. Nice to have songs that are fun for adults to dance to as well!

Okgo songs are also good. And great if you want to make a video playlist as their videos are amazing. Upside down and inside out is a huge favourite here. And then he loves the song too even without the video.

whyohwhy25 · 26/07/2019 02:07
