How on earth are people whose jobs require being outside coping with this weather?

I was just thinking about my postman and how awful it must be having to do the round in this heat.

Same goes for binmen.

And lots of others. Some people who work outside might be able to choose their hours and work overnight or at dawn/dusk, but how do people who HAVE to be outside in the mid morning and midday heat cope?

DP is self-employed and works outside. I guess he could choose not to work today but then he'd be letting his booked in customers down. He's just knuckling down to get the job done as quick as possible so he can get home and relax!

INeedNewShoes · 25/07/2019 12:51

My friends are away and I'm looking after their allotment for the week. Past two mornings I've chosen to be at the allotment at 6:30am to get the watering done early before the heat sets in. I suppose that's what got me thinking about this!

our local council has sent home all their outdoor workers today

feel bad for DH as he's a self-employed electrician who is working in a loft today!

Dh works outside.Today hes in full gear, heavy trousers work boots etc the poor sod

Fatted · 25/07/2019 12:59

Police officers? Firemen? What about those who can't get sent home because its too hot and also cannot remove their PPE?

If my DH's work is anything to go by, then they just all ring in sick and spend the day in the local beer garden.

DecomposingComposers · 25/07/2019 13:04

My DH works outside. Full PPE gear and very physical job too. You'd at least think the customers could offer a drink to people working in this heat wouldn't you?

SunnySomer · 25/07/2019 13:04

Fatted - they have to cope. Lots of water, lots of sun cream, shorter gaps between breaks.

SeptemberDays · 25/07/2019 13:05

Here it's cooler outside than inside, so I'm outside by choice, I think people who have to wear lots of clothing have it a lot worse.

SunnySomer · 25/07/2019 13:06

Decomposing- do people not do that? I have someone doing my garden (his choice to be here late morning) and I’ve been delivering a steady flow of iced drinks

pikapikachu · 25/07/2019 13:07

Bin men are starting work at 5:30 today. (Council put out a post on social media) Hopefully they are done for the day.

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 25/07/2019 13:10

There are roofers re tiling a building down my street at the moment, goodness knows how they are managing.

Circe32 · 25/07/2019 13:22

It's not much, I know, but for the last three weeks I've been feeding my Tesco delivery man ice lollies Smile

FranklySonImTheGaffer · 25/07/2019 13:33

DF is a builder and has been doing a conservatory all week. Roof is going on today apparently.
He has swapped jobs around so he didn't have to do a loft conversion as he thought that would be too awful in this weather.

He's wearing shorts, t shirt and steel toe capped boots. He's wearing sunscreen and just getting on with it I think - helped by his customer offering him cold drinks / ice creams / sandwiches / lollies every half hour!

I feel very bad for the police officers I saw walking around today - their uniforms are dark and bulky, they must be baking.

teenagetantrums · 25/07/2019 13:35

I work inside in a kitchen. It's always hotter than outside. Been a nightmare the last week. All you can do is drink lots of water and get on with it

S0CKS · 25/07/2019 14:08

What's sad is Police officers if they stop and have a drink or a sit down some busybody will be all over social media moaning that they are slacking on their taxes etc.
How people can have labourers over and not offer a drink disgusts me

Chocolatedaim · 25/07/2019 14:11

I’m a childminder so not outside work, but it’s much nicer out than in, we are just all in the paddling pool, lots of water, made tip tops. It’s fairly pleasant.
I would hate to be a manual labourer in this heat though. Or perhaps someone that has to wear a uniform!

Crinkle77 · 25/07/2019 14:17

My partner is a panel beater and is stuck.in a sweltering workshop. I feel so sorry for him.

MoaningMinniee · 25/07/2019 14:21

I'm one of the lucky ones who can move my job time around. Most of my clients request lunch time walks for their dogs, but they've all been happy to have them walked early today. If anyone had insisted I walk after 11 a.m. I'd have refused anyway. I believe it is dangerous to walk dogs in temperatures over twenty five C! I started at 5.50 a.m. when it was lovely. I'm about to start a round of quick visits for everyone who can't get at a garden to check they're okay. From past heat wave experience they will be comatose and not remotely interested in going anywhere, but just in case anyone needs a poo or a wee. And top up the water too of course.

bumblingbovine49 · 25/07/2019 14:22

I think it is.much nicer outside ,( in the shade) than inside. i.have to work.today and though I like the heat generally my back room ( south facing) where my office is is baking. I went outside to.hang up some.washing just now and it felt really nice compared to inside and I have fans on and all the blinds down but windows open . There is a bit of a breeze as the blinds are blowing onwards a lot but it is still very very hot

smilingthroughgrittedteeth · 25/07/2019 14:24

I give my bin men/postman/tesco driver cold bottles of water they always appreciate it

YesItsMeIDontCare · 25/07/2019 14:24

I've just filled the fridge with water and lager for DH when he gets home. Big salad for dinner. All bed linen is washed, dried and back on so it'll be nice when he gets in.

Beyond that... 🤷🏼‍♀️🥵

Fibbke · 25/07/2019 14:25

Dd is volunteering outside at a sports thing all day. Hat, suncream, gallons of water.

WhereDoesThisToiletGo · 25/07/2019 14:29

I've had 2 builders hand digging foundations here all week.
Area is in shade until about 11, so ive rigged up garden parasol to provide shade after that.
Offering constant drinks and I insisted they use the suncream I gave them when the shirts came off!

Fizzypoo · 25/07/2019 14:29

My dp has been laying a patio all week. He's got his hat, a gazebo and plenty of water. He could put the job off but then he wouldn't be paid 🤷‍♀️

LIZS · 25/07/2019 14:37

Our bin collection was supposed to be earlier today, as they planned an early start and finish.
