I discovered a dead slug in the paddling pool this morning. I’ve got it out but i still feel icky about the DC going in it. Would you change the water?

Yes 🤢

Namelessinseattle · 24/07/2019 09:17

How did you know it was dead? And yes.

BertrandRussell · 24/07/2019 09:18

No.

Aus84 · 24/07/2019 09:18

I would. Don't they sometimes carry a parasite that can cause meningitis.

Fortheloveofscience · 24/07/2019 09:18

Changing the water would be ridiculous.

BenWillbondsPants · 24/07/2019 09:18

Hell no. Our dog gets in the paddling pool with our kids so a slug is small fry. Grin

Newjobnewstart · 24/07/2019 09:19

If its been out overnight prob more than a slug been in.it! Id change it daily unless there is a cover

Badcat666 · 24/07/2019 09:19

No, what a waste of water in a heat wave! Its a dead slug, not a decomposing human body.

MissYeti · 24/07/2019 09:19

I wouldn't, it's just a slug

Deelish75 · 24/07/2019 09:19

It was sunk to the bottom and on its back so I presume it was dead , I’ve scooped it out and put it in the bushes.

Now I didn't know that @Aus84, would be interested to read about this, can you link to your source? That may make me take a different view in this!

Sunburntnoseandears · 24/07/2019 09:20

Yabu not to offer swimming lessons.....
Poor thing!

Sparklingbrook · 24/07/2019 09:20

I would empty it and refill.

OrdinarySnowflake · 24/07/2019 09:21

How big is the paddling pool? Small just covering your feet one, yes. Large almost swimming pool, no.

doodleygirl · 24/07/2019 09:22

No, just crack on using it. You have no idea how many other little creatures have had a bath in the paddling pool Grin

floppybit · 24/07/2019 09:22

No way, do not empty and refill

BenWillbondsPants · 24/07/2019 09:23

It's a dreadful waste of water to empty and refill.

Dontforgetyourbrolly · 24/07/2019 09:24

I've been thinking about this as i am lucky enough to have this week off work. I was going to fill up the pool today it's quite big and I didnt want to waste the water . I don't have a specific cover- I was thinking of trying a bed sheet over it over night. 5hat would be ok wouldn't it?
I was going to water the plants with the water when I empty it tomorrow night

FenellaMaxwell · 24/07/2019 09:25

Slugs in the UK Do not carry rat lungworm, and you’d have to actually eat the slug.

That said, yes I would change the water.

troppibambini · 24/07/2019 09:25

Nope I wouldn't change it.
I put an old fitted sheet over the top at night to stop beasties falling in.

AuntieStella · 24/07/2019 09:25

If you're not worried about bird shit, fox pee etc, then there's no reason to be concerned about a slug (especially if you have v small DC who still lick things in the garden)

But if you really must, at least do not waste the water. Too late for today, but it's generally better to water plants in the evening. So today sloosh it anywhere that looks a bit thirsty; from this evening, empty it to use for watering, then put it somewhere out of reach of beasties overnight (though wherever that it, spiders might still get it)

zippey · 24/07/2019 09:27

Open air swimming pools often have loads of insects and animals in them, so I wouldn’t. Just fish it out.

munemema · 24/07/2019 09:30

No, it wouldn't occur to me to do anything other than fish the slug out. That said, I don't think I've ever left a filled paddling pool out overnight. Isn't the water likely to be more "contaminated" just through having had children in it? Grin

zippey, open air swimming pools also have chlorine...

Deelish75 · 24/07/2019 10:03

AuntieStella that’s what I was thinking, keep the kids out of the paddling pool today and use the water on the garden tonight.
The pool is covered, tarpaulin with a few rocks to keep it down, the slug must have found its way underneath it.

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 24/07/2019 10:07

Your kids probably have more germs on their own feet than the slug introduced. Don't be so water wasteful.
