Can anyone help my poor dd with her hair?!

Poor dd hasn't been blessed with the easiest of hair, it's always been unruly, very dry looking and prone to curl/frizz. Straightening hasn't exactly helped with the condition of it but I don't blame her, as it's the only thing that sort of tames it.
She is so down about it though. She's had a rough few months and seems so fed up about her appearance. Money is a bit tight but I wanted to treat her to a keratin treatment, does anyone have a recommendation for a decent one I could do at home? Preferably with a link!

Has she tried the "curly girl" method? this is what helped my DD.

Has she ever tried the loreal elnett straightening spray, I find it's pretty good I have wavy frizzy thick dry hair and it's been keeping mine straight and smooth even in this heat

OverpricedFloorCushion · 23/07/2019 23:17

I found a soap and glory hair cream that has made a visible difference to my hair.

You put it on then blow dry, it lasts for around eight washes and is heat activated so when you straighten your hair it makes it smoother and shinier. My hair is straight but very prone to frizz and this has really tamed it.

Coconut oil?

PickAChew · 23/07/2019 23:20

She absolutely needs curly girl method. Need to work with, not against it. My slightly wavy, frizzy hair turns out to have a bloody good curl and look quite sleek with CGM.

MissPollyHadADolly19 · 23/07/2019 23:29

I agree with others who recommend curly girl method.
My DD6 has curly/frizzy hair and before I learnt how to maintain it properly it just looked like a frizzy mess, since working with her curls instead of against them it has improved dramatically.

skankingpiglet · 23/07/2019 23:32

She should try to embrace her curls rather than see them as a negative ("prone to curl") that has to be literally straightened out.
Frizz is just a lack of moisture IMO - or daring to brush it whilst dry! I second the curly girl method as a starting point. It didn't fully work for my DDs, but it was a great improvement which I've learnt to tweak now to suit their curls (which differ in texture between them). My own hair is poker-straight, so it has been a steep learning curve! Our biggest successes have been:

  • Not brushing/combing when dry EVER. Use a wet brush when wet and covered in conditioner, or spray down and use a wide-toothed comb if needed for styling eg plaits/braids.
  • Ditching shampoo unless somehow dinner etc had found its way in there (unusual these days!). 'Wash' using conditioner instead.
  • Leave in conditioner applyed ASAP after washing (and gently scrunching dry. Never rub!) whilst hair is still wet.
  • DD1 has a dryer, coarser texture so has coconut oil run through it after the leave in too. it still looks dry again after a couple of days and needs re-oiling
bumbleboots · 23/07/2019 23:34

Shea moisture shampoo, intensive conditioners. Argan oil. Wide tooth comb. I really like silk oil of Morocco leave in spray. Im allergic to everything but this stuff doesn't cause problems for me. Try and figure out her hair type (1a is straight 3b is very curly) google it. Then search youtube videos. It helped me. Good luck!

Find a hair dresser with curly hair. A good hairdresser makes all the difference

minipie · 23/07/2019 23:45

My DD doesn’t have curly hair but it’s wavy and tends to be dry. Here’s what we do, it has made a huge difference compared with when we used to shampoo it:

  • no shampoo ever. Conditioner to wash it. 1 or 2x per week max. Also avoid getting shower gel, bubble bath or other soap type products on her hair as they will dry it out.
  • hair towel to dry it (one of those turban ones with a button) no rubbing dry
  • spray conditioner (we use Aussie Miracle Moist) used liberally every morning before brushing. Sorry this isn’t the cheapest option but it makes such a difference.

I don’t think you can get home keratin treatments but she could try one of those hot oil conditioners or deep conditioning hair masks. This kind of hair is super thirsty and you can’t throw too much moisture/conditioner at it.

HeavenlyEyes · 23/07/2019 23:49

Yup another vote for Curly Girl method.

Don't use silicones, keratin or alcohol or any shampoo on your hair. Approved conditioners to cowash only.

Ilovetolurk · 24/07/2019 06:41

I was in a beauty supplies shop last week they had salon keratin kits for sale . Would no doubt be much cheaper than having a salon treatment you just need to get the technique right (youtube?)

SavoyCabbage · 24/07/2019 07:02

Sleep with coconut oil on at least once a week. Wash it out in the morning. I don’t know what a keratin treatment is but coconut oil is 90p a jar and it’s fantastic.

Try this www.boots.com/tresemmé-botanique-nourish-and-replenish-conditioner-400ml-10241947 conditioner. If it doesn’t help, use it yourself and she needs to try something else. What works for some hair might not work for another.

Find a curly hairdresser.

ZebrasAreBras · 24/07/2019 07:24

I have the frizz - course, bushy, very wiry and hard to manage.

I have to embrace the curl, straightening just doesn't work - although I've never tried a keratin treatment.

This is my method:

-every morning wet down hair, and brush while wet.

-do not wash it too much - mine never gets greasy. When you do wash - coconut oil treat first - wash out with Tresemme. Condition with tresemme. Then put serum on when still very wet.

-put some product on - experiment with what suits her hair. I use both of these:

www.superdrug.com/Cantu/Cantu-for-Natural-Hair-Twist-%26-Lock-Gel-370g/p/729428

-Allow to dry naturally, leave it to curl and never, ever brush or comb when dry.

  • Do not cut it too short. My hair only works when it has some length.

My hair is hard work!

I’ve used something like this several times in the past. It isn’t quick or easy to apply, probably takes two hours from start to finish. It smells terrible, and you ideally need to do it outside or next to an open door, but it is life changing.

If it was me I would probably try and take her to a Groupon Brazilian blow dry to have it done professionally the first time so she can see how they apply it, then use the amazon kit after that (they have the same results). Remember you can’t wash your hair or get it wet for three days afterwards.

My poor daughter seems to also have inherited my curly hair so I’m sure I’m in for this soon!

stucknoue · 24/07/2019 07:32

Don't you get greasy hair- curly method for wavy is only washing once a week! I wash mine 3 times most people seem to wash daily

ZebrasAreBras · 24/07/2019 07:34

ps. I use this type of hair brush - you have to be careful brushing wet hair.

SweetJasmine17 · 24/07/2019 07:37

Simple tips

•conditioner few times a week, shampoo only when dirty
• wash with cold water or it gets dry
•pat dry or use a tshirt to wrap up hair or soft microfibre towel
• moisturise with curly hair products like leave in conditioner or oils (do not use things like tresemme or frizease it's not for curly hair at all)
•plait hair at night so it doesn't get matted
•do not brush when dry. Use a spray bottle to wet then comb or detangle using product
•DO NOT USE HEAT that is why her hair is frizzy🤦🏻‍♀️
•cut split and frizzy ends when needed

Please for the love of god do not use heat.frizzy hair is neglected curly hair your DD can achieve it but be patient and try and follow the CGM as others have said

(My hair is loose curls and used to be horrible and frizzy as my mum didn't know what to do with it. Now they're very defined and not frizzy at all. My DD now has very tight Afro/curly hair and it's easy once you keep doing it this way. If hers isn't frizzy your DDs shouldn't be either)

GOOD LUCK!!

Cleanmywindows · 24/07/2019 07:38

I'm 35, naturally curly. Its taken me til this year to learn how to properly look after my curls. Please try to help her learn about curly girl, I second all the related suggestions above. It will make for a much better self image going forward if your Dd is able to embrace the hair she's got. It has been eye opening for me to realise how basically everything we "know" about hair (e.g use shampoo to wash it, wrap it up in a towel when you're done, brush it every day etc etc) is what works for the straight-haired amongst us and if you are naturally curly all that stuff is plain wrong!

AvengerDanvers95 · 24/07/2019 07:38

My daughter has curly dry hair, I use Original Sprout deep conditioner and comb out the tangles with either a detangling comb or a tangle teezer brush while it's in. The conditioner has no silicon etc. Plait it before bed as well.

SeaEagle21 · 24/07/2019 07:38

My DD used Scwarzkopf Glatt straightening cream - bingo ! Her hair is perfectly straight and smooth, and shiny. www.amazon.co.uk/Schwarzkopf-Glatt-Chemical-Straightening-Cream/dp/B008EUGKVG?tag=mumsnetforu03-21

AgathaF · 24/07/2019 07:45

I use this one. As Needallthesleep said, it's a bit messy, smells horrible, has to be left on your hair for 3 days ideally (although I leave it for 2 and still get nearly 3 months out of it, have to use salt free products on your hair (salt free shampoo isn't the easiest to find), but....... it's brilliant stuff. Turns my hair from an unruly, frizzy mess into soft, smooth and glossy hair that isn't affected by damp etc.

MhysaMhysa · 24/07/2019 08:22

@ZebrasAreBras your hair is absolutely beautiful, I love it. I have two very curly haired DDs who look like they have matted candy floss on their heads every morning, impossible to brush even when wet, but going to steal your tips for my eldest, thanks.

GeriAtric · 24/07/2019 08:34

This is all really interesting. My dd used to have very curly hair but now it's just wavy, and my son's is curly. I've never known how to care for it properly. Wrt 'washing' with conditioner, my DH did this once prior to my dd needing s nit comb. He thought it would be okay to wet it, condition it and rinse through without shampoo but the texture of it was awful - it felt greasy and knotty. How does washing with conditioner only work?
