Family holiday in central europe not working out

Mitsouko67 · 23/07/2019 20:10

And I'm getting all the blame. We're in Moravia in the Czech Republic, me, DH and 2 DS 11 and 16.We're here for 3 weeks and all they want to do is go swimming. It's a landlocked country obviously so just finding swimming pools.

I have been sightseeing on my own visiting castles and palaces every second or third day. It's a bit lonely and DH is sulking.

Discover Vienna today.Interested in the Hapsburgs.DH disapproves.

Help!!

Fabulous links thank you.

Will definitely Czech them out!

Your children I have some sympathy with.

Sulking husband really, really not so much. Unless you literally snubbed every idea he came up with and painstakingly reseatched thought not

Honestly, make do and mend/ making the best of a not perfect for him situation is lust-making stuff. Carping and moaning.... nope.

How often have you fully, or even partially, had your way in terms of choosing a holiday? I can anticipate the answer already....

Mitsouko67 · 23/07/2019 21:12

Oh I've learnt my lesson!!

Have you got a car? If so it's about 4.5h to Lake Balaton in Hungary - book a couple of nights there. Super cheap lake resort and good swimmi g etc.

MsTSwift · 23/07/2019 21:16

We loved Austria girls and I went lake swimming and sunbathed and dh cycled up and down mountains

Dieu · 23/07/2019 21:19

Sorry OP, but next time just go all inclusive with pools and flumes!
This isn't really a 'teenage' holiday. Hope it's salvageable though SmileWineThanks

ForalltheSaints · 23/07/2019 21:22

Vienna has a large pool and spa complex to the south of the city. Thermen Oberlaa. Its on an Underground line.

MrsGrammaticus · 23/07/2019 21:23

Could you head to Zell? That's all about the lake!

ImNotYourGranny · 23/07/2019 21:33

On our family holiday we take it in turns to choose the day's activity and everyone is expected to happily go along with everyone else's choice. Would that work?

theunrivalledjoysofparenting · 23/07/2019 21:37

Didn’t you research what there was to do locally before you Booked? Did any of your family research things?

Ated · 23/07/2019 21:39

Aqualand
Pasohlávky 110 E, 691 22 Pasohlávky
GPS: 48°54'9.936"N, 16°34'28.524"E

BoudicasBoudoir · 23/07/2019 21:40

You anywhere near Brno? There’s a lake/reservoir on the edge of the city that has boat trips and swimming and whatnot. Google Brno Reservoir.

TaxiPlease · 23/07/2019 21:40

Not sure where exactly you are, but looking at Google Maps there appear to be several lakes in the area and a water park type of thing as well (Aqualand Moravia). A quick google tells me you can go swimming, fishing, canoeing and windsurfing on the largest one of the lakes. The area is also supposed to be a cycling paradise.

I hope you can manage to turn the holiday around, it's a lovely area and such a shame that your 'D'H and DC seem determined to stay bored and grumpy.

Sorry OP, but next time just go all inclusive with pools and flumes!
This isn't really a 'teenage' holiday.

Bit of a sweeping statement there. I really enjoyed sightseeing holidays (especially castles!) as a teenager and know many others who did as well. God, I hope I never end up with disinterested, bored-by-everything teenagers. I'd rather shoot myself than spend two weeks in AI hell.

Next time involve the whole family in planning a holiday.

INeedAFlerken · 23/07/2019 21:42

I'm sympathetic, OP. It's your holiday, too, presumably helping foot the bill after doing everything and then some for your family year round. The least everyone else can do is do things you want to do, too.

I'd be furious. They can swim practically every day, well into the evenings ... after they've visited places you want to see, too.

Vienna is a great day trip. I hope you get them there.

MustShowDH · 23/07/2019 22:01

Look on Tripadvisor. There's normally a 'Things nearby' section, bit like going down a Youtube rabbit hole as each click gets you looking at something else you would never have searched for yourself.

We're holidaying in inland Europe as well in a few weeks, so I've been doing that and saving the things I fancy so when we get there I can give DH and DD choices.

EssentialHummus · 23/07/2019 22:10

Austria: if you google "bad +name of neighbourhood" the local public pool (they are in most neighbourhoods) will come up, and they are of a great quality overall. Public pools are called swimmbad, tend not to be laned on weekends (operate as splash parks). DH seconds Danube, apparently there is a sheep section and people section, watch for that or your DSs will get more than they bargained for! grin.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 23/07/2019 22:11

You are the Wumman.

Of course it's your fault. What were you thinking?

Grin
Leeds2 · 23/07/2019 22:15

Let OH and the boys use the internet to find places that they would like to go to, for swimming or not. Their choices are not your responsibility, and they are quite capable of doing some research themselves. Meanwhile, you crack on and enjoy yourself. They have the option of going with you, or they can stay behind and sulk.

Thermalvest · 23/07/2019 22:24

Locals go here (you need a car) - public pools up on a hill above Viena: www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Attraction_Review-g190454-d10676234-Reviews-Krapfenwaldlbad_Swimming_Pool-Vienna.html

and here:

Classy, quieter, more expensive but lovely. Easily combinable with a visit to Schönbrunn Palace!

IdblowJonSnow · 23/07/2019 22:40

Was also going to suggest lake balaton in Hungary if u can find somewhere cheap to stay for a night or two.

Mitsouko67 · 23/07/2019 22:56

Guys you are amazing and very kind. Laughing through my tears. Progress report. Back at chez mitsouko after a fab day out at Schonbrunn. Will definitely take them back to visit danube swimming areas avoiding sheep!

DS1 made a friend today. We are walking to Austerlitz battlefield tomorrow. Progress indeed!

Personally I would just tell them you know they like swimming but it's an not that kind of country and an expensive holiday which is supposed to be an opportunity to do something they couldn't do at home. It's a bit of a selfish thing to do on holiday unless it's that sort of place in my opinion, a bit like wanting to stay in and watch tv.
