DD hurt her eye, still won't open it

Travelled to Wales with dd 5 and ds 8 yesterday to visit a friend. An hour into the journey realised that DD had somehow poked herself in the eye with a pen or a pencil. She wouldn't let me look properly but there was something on it, maybe a scratch but could have been gunge. Ended up at an a&e and they tried to look but had the same problem, she freaked and was squeezing her eyes shut. There seemed to be a streak of pink in the bit of gunge in the inner corner but from the bit of a look they managed they didn't think there was anything in it and gave me some ointment to put in it.

Today she has refused to open either eye apart from one slightly to go to the toilet and won't let me near her face. We have had cuddles and I have tried everything but she won't even let me look.

I'm with very intermittent phone signal or internet in the middle of nowhere and she wants to stay in bed and won't get up. Honestly don't know what to do, she gets hysterical if I press the point but the eyelid is swollen and it's still watering. Help!

Google the Welsh equivalent of 111 (if it isn't the same) and then phone it. Honestly, didn't that occur to you?

BlueberryFool123 · 20/07/2019 16:02

You are going to have to take her back to A and E (if possible one with eye casualty). I wouldn’t take the risk with eyes. Where are you in wales maybe some local mumsnetters can advise.

AllTheProsecco · 20/07/2019 16:07

DD scratched my cornea a few months ago. I was heavily pregnant at the time and the nurses took pity on me and gave me some amazing numbing drops. Could you take her back to a&e and ask for something for the pain first before they take a look? I was pain free for a few hours.

I find that children and dogs play up when mum is there as they know you will stick up for them.

Sometimes if you wait outside your child or dog does what they’re told without making a fuss.

Just my experience and observation.

stucknoue · 20/07/2019 16:32

Where in wales are you, when dd was injured in n Wales we were told to head to alder hay, but the local hospital will advise and arrange transfer if needed.

KitKat1985 · 20/07/2019 18:50

Is there an eye hospital near you OP? If not, in your case I would go back to A&E.

Lindy2 · 20/07/2019 18:55

I'd get that checked again.
I hope all is ok but I wouldn't take risks where eyes are concerned.

PatrickMerricksGoshawk · 20/07/2019 19:06

Get her checked again - if they genuinely can't examine it well enough they should arrange an examination under anaesthetic.

wotsittoyou · 20/07/2019 19:16

Go back. Is her eye warm to the touch? It could be cellulitis.

wotsittoyou · 20/07/2019 19:18

I had cellulitis behind my eye. It was excrutiating to open. It had travelled to my lymph nodes by my 3rd visit to A&E and needed iv steroids and antibiotics.

twirlypoo · 20/07/2019 19:20

I’ve had eye ulcers and it was agony - they gave me numbing drops so they could properly examine my eye. She needs to go back to a&e - as others have said, preferably one with an eye hospital, as you just can’t take the risk with eye sight!

Toddlerteaplease · 20/07/2019 19:25

If you are in both wales, I would err on the side of caution and take her to Alder Hey. They will be able to deal with it properly.

wotsittoyou · 20/07/2019 19:26

*excruciating. Spelling not a strength, obv.

orangeshoebox · 20/07/2019 19:32

agree with pp. she needs to be seen again. the eye needs to be examined.

Goforitgirl · 20/07/2019 19:38

When I got acid in my eye as a child they put a drop in my eye to check there was no scratches. Sounds like your DD needs this and medical professionals will have a way of getting them in. Get her back pronto. No risks with eyes.

LyraLaVey · 20/07/2019 20:17

Thank you all, I'm sat at a&e with her now. Poor love she still won't open her eyes.

Bless her hopefully she can get some help tonight

moreismore · 20/07/2019 20:20

This sounds really mean but what if you/they cover her good eye? The urge to see may overcome the fear of letting someone look...Hope she’s better soon

StudentHelp · 20/07/2019 20:21

Hope she’s feeling better soon

Spam88 · 20/07/2019 20:55

Oh bless her, if she's scratched her cornea that is really painful. Those anaesthetic drops are bliss though, don't know why they don't just prescribe those...

TinyMystery · 20/07/2019 20:59

Poor DD thy sounds really horrible! Hope they can do something for her.

FreezerBird · 20/07/2019 21:10

Hi OP,

DH is an optometrist and we're in Wales. If you can give us an idea of where you are he can recommend which hospital to head for if the current A&E visit doesn't sort it for you.

Hope she's feeling much better though!

MrsMozartMkII · 20/07/2019 22:47

Hope she's sorted soon.

Sending a handhold. It's horrible when the children are hurting.

justasking111 · 20/07/2019 22:54

oh poor little thing, why do these things always seem to happen when on holiday... Flowers

GloGirl · 20/07/2019 23:25

Sounds terrible. How did she getting on?
