Any tabloid speak you dislike?

For me it's:
Adorable for anything that's quite nice
Stepping out - doesn't anybody just "go out" any more?
Blasting/Slamming - maybe just disagreeing with?
Flaunting

I know they're all normal words/expressions but, given journalists work with words, it all seems a bit cliched/lazy to me.

"A source close to the couple says..." = "Our intern writes..." - I have firsthand experience of that one Grin

LaMarschallin · 19/07/2019 12:35

X-"shaming".
For disapproving (rightly or wrongly) or being unpleasant about X.

OP posts:
Quellium · 19/07/2019 12:37

Flaunting makes me enraged, but also 'showcasing'.

Celebrity x showcased their natural, blossoming, bare baby bump after jetting off for a babymoon.

Always women 'flaunting' and 'showcasing'. Never men. Fuck off Daily Mail with this misogynistic shit.

sqeakywheel · 19/07/2019 12:38

Reached out
Romping, when they mean sex.
Crafted, nothing is made anymore.

powershowerforanhour · 19/07/2019 12:44

Adverb, comma then fact.
Used to instruct the reader to feel disapproval:
"Worryingly, x many immigrants are recorded as having entered the country in the past 3 months"
"Disturbingly" annoys me the most.

Shrieked/shrilled- used when a woman whose politics do not align with those of the paper's editor talks in public.

Thecowinthemeadowgoesmoo · 19/07/2019 12:47

Celebs always seem to have a 'burgeoning baby bump' to flaunt. Makes me shudder.

Sooverthemill · 19/07/2019 12:49

'Flaunting' as in
"Bella Hadid flaunts her toned legs in white shirt with denim jacket and knee-high boots"
She is wearing jeans fgs

JohnsShamewell · 19/07/2019 13:00

Leads. As in “Amanda Holden leads Mother’s Day tributes with sweet snap”. Makes it sound like some kind of parade with them all holding up theirs cards to the camera.

GrrrAaargh · 19/07/2019 13:19

Not sure if it's tabloid speak exactly, but any series of unimportant events being named a SAGA.

MikeUniformMike · 19/07/2019 13:21

I don't read the tabloids but one thing about newspaper and magazine articles is that they always seem to say ' First name Surname, age,...' if it's a woman but rarely if it's a man.

ProfessorSlocombe · 19/07/2019 13:31

Oh, also forgot Betteridges law (which applied properly can save buying a newspaper ever again - it's what I've done).

S0CKS · 19/07/2019 13:33

Reaching out.
We reached out to their representatives.

Equatoria · 19/07/2019 13:45

Pup or pooch instead of dog.
Love nest for a couple's flat.
Inanimate objects, with no awareness, which supposedly 'struggle', such as interest rates 'struggling' to stabilise.
Check out these 'hilarious' quotes from Reddit, MN etc. Hmm
Boffin for someone intelligent
A mother/grandmother/father/grandfather of 1/2/3/4+ instead of a woman or man

Redcrayons · 19/07/2019 14:06

I do like the way the sidebar put stuff in quotes to indicate the bits they've made up ie. Posh spice flaunts her 'nose job'
And whole articles made up of quoting people off Twitter talking about something trivial.

And my local newspaper runs a daily article on stuff you can buy in Primark. Especially loathe the 'here's a £500 pair of designer shoes you can get in Primark for a tenner'.

BIWI · 19/07/2019 14:11

'Tax payers' money'. Irritates the hell out of me, especially because it fuels Daily Mail-type righteous indignation.

The money we pay in tax - which we all have to pay - goes to the Government to fund all our key services that we take for granted. Like police, health, education, security, etc.

Once we have paid the money, it is no longer ours!.

I can't bear the insinuation that somehow, because we have paid it, we are owed something in some kind of way.

It's not only lazy journalism/writing, it's also irresponsible because it's used deliberately to provoke a response.

supercee · 19/07/2019 14:18

A few Daily Fail favourites which makes me want to hurt someone/thing:

'Commands attention in..' - when a celeb puts a nice outfit on.

'Gruelling working' - when leaving the gym/wears workout clothes. How do you it was gruelling?!!

'Crafty cigarette' - they are smoking.

GGGGRRRRR Angry

thisnamechanger · 19/07/2019 14:21

'tipping the scales' on anything about weight-loss

People who are 'left disgusted' or 'left embarrassed'.

thisnamechanger · 19/07/2019 14:21

Crafty cigarette' - they are smoking.

In the DM they're always 'puffing on a cigarette'.

Or 'snorting' cocaine.

thisnamechanger · 19/07/2019 14:22

Oh and 'suspicious looking cigarette' for joint.

TheWashingMachine · 19/07/2019 14:23

"Heartbreaking" , for example I read the other day "the Queen and Kate Middleton share the same" heartbreaking" incurable sickness. Totally daft, apparently they both get travel sick, hardly "heartbreaking"!

Mrsjayy · 19/07/2019 14:24

Tax payers money is the new Hard working families Hmm which was just as irritating !

Jsmith99 · 19/07/2019 14:24

‘ Assets’ meaning breasts, as in ‘she was flaunting her assets’ meaning ‘some cleavage was visible’.

I always assumed “a source close to the player said...” means “the player’s PR / agent said...”

BIWI · 19/07/2019 14:25

Agree, @Mrsjayy!

thisnamechanger · 19/07/2019 14:25

This one is actually really niche but their constant use of the word 'as' in headlines to save space:
e.g "Tragic tot killed in fire as father is arrested"
Makes it sounds like the two things happened at once.

supercee · 19/07/2019 14:28

Or 'enjoying' a cigarette. They are never just plain having one.
