Anyone have an idea of what I can have?

I'm so fed up of baked potatoes and I really don't want to cook 😭

It's bloody hard adjusting to this way of eating

@mbosnz yes! I've already found a recipe for GF salt & chilli chicken for me to try.
Does anyone know a good recipe for a Chinese chicken curry?
I've recently stocked up my spices, along with some 5 spice in the vain hope of finding an alternative 😂

I guess I'm just going to have to find a love for cooking sigh

Anyway, I've given up on the takeaway idea for tonight. I've made some chilli cheese potato skins instead.

Thanks for all the recommendations though, there may be hope for me yet!

You checked the five spice was GF, right? (I only ask because I didn't - terrible parenting moment. . .)

There's definitely hope. Unless you want KFC. Although I have a great recipe for buttermilk fried chicken. . .

CrepuscularCritter · 18/07/2019 19:57

On FB there are some groups dealing with GF. There's Coeliacs Eat Out Too, and also one that lists GF fish and chip shops although I can't remember the exact name. And could you swerve from Chinese to Thai...that often has good options for me (coeliac and lactose intolerant).

HighlandWorrier · 18/07/2019 20:05

OP what symptoms did you have if you don't mind me asking?

TheyCallMeMellowYellow · 18/07/2019 20:17

@mbosnz after a mad dash to the cupboard, I can confirm the 5 spice is GF (well, I think it is, I can't see anything in the ingredients that I shouldn't eat)
I would LOVE a buttermilk chicken recipe if you wouldn't mind sharing?
I recently fell in love with the m&s ones but obviously I can't have them anymore 😭
I can still have their tempura battered chicken though, it's delicious!

OP posts:
TheyCallMeMellowYellow · 18/07/2019 20:22

@HighlandWorrier my symptoms were
Bloating (very bad bloating)
Loose stools (sorry! TMI seriously, look away now, but it wasn't like diarrhoea, more like mash potato consistency) (so sorry!)
Hair loss
Tiredness
Bad skin
Really foggy head feeling
And just generally feeling off,
I knew something wasn't quite right with me but I couldn't pin point what it could be.

OP posts:
mbosnz · 18/07/2019 20:24

Okay, first rule of GF club, is that the M&S GF flour is bloody amazing. Seriously.

Makes a great roux sauce for lasagnes. . .

I'll dig that recipe out tomorrow and post it for you.

TheyCallMeMellowYellow · 18/07/2019 20:24

It's only been just over a week, but I'm definitely feeling a bit better.
The bloating is still there... but I do feel like I'm thinking a bit more clearly. The foggy head feeling is starting to lift 🤞

OP posts:
TheyCallMeMellowYellow · 18/07/2019 20:26

@mbosnz thank you! I appreciate any help I can get!
I'm taking a trip to m&s on Saturday so I'll grab some of that flour (and massive amounts of tempura chicken Grin )

Do GF pasta sheets taste the same? We do love a good lasagne.

stucknoue · 18/07/2019 20:27

Most Indian take aways can do gluten free, if you have an Indian sweet shop/bakery type place they cook to order so should be fine (usually veggie, our local one is brilliant for gf) do tell them though and ensure it's not lost in translation if their chef is not English speaking. Avoid anything cooked in the tandor because they cook bread in it.

mbosnz · 18/07/2019 20:28

We've found the M&S lasagne sheets (I'm starting to sound like an M&S advert) very good, you don't notice the difference. It takes time. We all eat gf lasagne now, because that's pretty impossible to divvy up. And they love my lasagne. I do a mean chicken lasagne. . . beef is DH's. . .

Lozz22 · 18/07/2019 20:29

Only gluten free takeaway I've had is fish and chips. They were cooked separately so took longer than everyone else's, but I had no issues with eating them. The batter on the fish looked just like it would on a normal fish just lighter in texture and the chips were spot on too. To be honest I was expecting a load of crap so was pleasantly surprised at how nice they were!! The gluten free fish fingers are nice and so are the gluten free chicken nuggets. I've tried a gluten free pizza once and didn't like it but I think I over cooked it so it was rock hard. Wouldn't mind trying a Pizza Hut gluten free pizza though.

HighlandWorrier · 18/07/2019 20:30

Thanks Mellow alot of those symptoms I have but could also be my underactive thyroid. I did cut out gluten a while back and felt amazing also lost 16lbs in weight. Stupid me went back to old habits and put it all back on and feel crap. I did have a blood test which came back negative for coeliacs so wondering if I may be intolerant. Hope you start to feel much better soon.x

stucknoue · 18/07/2019 20:31

Oh and las iguanas have lots of gf options, they deliver here. Our local Chinese has gf dishes too but I would be wary as it's not always known that soy sauce contains wheat.

Wereonabearhunt · 18/07/2019 20:34

Not "quite" the same but Tesco cheese bunny bites are quite a good alternative to quavers.

Gf pasta and sheets are good in heavily sauced meals.. lasagne, pasta bake etc

notapizzaeater · 19/07/2019 13:55

Aldi do a tempura chicken and fish which are fab. We use them and make a mean sweet and sour.

Tong master (on amazon and eBay) do a gf Chinese curry sauce.

notapizzaeater · 19/07/2019 13:58

Yorkshire puddings :
90 g gf plain flour
Heaped tablespoon cornflour
4 eggs
Milk to double cream consistency

Cook as normal - no one will tell the difference.

All m and s sausages are gf - this batter makes a good toad in the hole.

underthebridgedowntown · 20/07/2019 10:50

I've found the supermarket own brand gf pasta to be the best - Sainsbury's or Tesco's are absolutely fine, my DH eats it without complaint. Don't touch Heinz gf pasta - it's sloppy and horrible.

Lasagne sheets I found could be a bit tough, but I probably wasn't using them right. Raid the free from sections in supermarkets - Tesco and ASDA generally best imo, except for M&S which is the absolute king but can get expensive, and gf is expensive enough as it is.

Don't worry, we all go through the jacket potato phase, and then come out the other side with a greater range than seemed possible at first. I haven't had a jacket in months Grin

Helenluvsrob · 20/07/2019 10:56

Learn to cook decent Chinese food.
A large proportion of the worlds population eat mostly gluten free simply because they are from non wheat growing areas of China !

Rice/ rice noodles and a lot of Chinese toppings are fine for you and delicious.

Or find a good Chinese takeaway that you can rely on. They need to have ingredient info these days for you to check

RandomNameChange415 · 20/07/2019 11:11

If you stock up on certified gf cornflour, tamari gf soy sauce, certified gf sesame oil, a big jar of ginger and garlic paste, pure rice noodles, and a bottle of sherry, then you can do a lot of very tasty Chinese style dishes very easily. I love pork strips marinaded in a mixture of soy sauce, sherry, sesame oil, ginger, garlic and dark brown sugar, served with rice and stir fried greens. Lemon chicken is pretty easy to make yourself if you have guaranteed gf cornflour and infinitely nicer than shop bought.

KnobJockey · 20/07/2019 11:16

Frankie and Benny's has a good gluten free menu.

Dowser · 20/07/2019 11:29

I’ve not been diagnosed but have all your symptoms and then some.
I’m working with a Dowser healer and I’ve cut out all gluten that’s rye oats, barley , malt, maltodextrin as well as wheat and all lactose too

His advice was to buy the herb goldenseal and have starting from 6 drops in water twice a day before meals up to 12 drops day for three weeks

He explained how the inflammation it causes in the body allows bad bacteria to thrive. Avoiding it and using the herb will help deal with that although he is going to send me more remedies.

Thankfully my husband is doing it also as he has a lot of sinus issues

We have the meerkat meals and like Bella italia when eating out as you buy one get one free.
I have the salmon meal normally and my husband had a burger.

I’ve never been a big fan of take always so that doesn’t bother me
Also when eating out, a good Toby carvery fills a hole . Plenty of meat, veg, roasties and vegetarian gravy is gluten free.

I’m definitely not as bloated and I may have lost some weight but that may just be water weight as it’s not as hot now as I’m not as swollen.

I’ve joined the coeliacs society and they send you out a pack that contains a book with guidance on supermarket shopping.
However they don’t include lactose free either, so we still have to look at individual wrappers.

Interesgly the medical Dowser dowsed my health at 70 percent. Apparently 80 per cent is normal for my age 67
Although it doesn’t sound much , it’s quite a challenge to get to the 80 per cent. I suppose it is for people who have to completely overhaul their diet but I was lactose and mostly gluten free for years...now I’m strictly doing it

My husbands given up cheese 😱 and beer 😱😱😱 which he loved
Not many pubs are stocking gluten free beer so I really feel for him
He has red wine with ice cubes

It’s a problem I know but I want my health back

Dowser · 20/07/2019 11:33

Oh, If you want to use the herb goldenseal , nature’s answer is the brand and we also have to take
Vitasorb b and Zinc ascorbate from biocare as the gluten plays havoc with our vitamin B6 production which is the precursor to seratonin our happiness drug .
Well that’s true because even a relatively mild attack had me plummeting the depths of depression and I, not really a depressive person

Oh and when he dowsed my husbands health..it was 68 per cent

It’ll be interesting to see what it is in a months time at our next appointment

ZazieTheCat · 20/07/2019 11:38

GF Pizza Express.

There’s a gf fish & chip shop and a gf chinese restaurant in Edinburgh if you’re by there.
