Stephen king ... what after outsider?

Someonesayroadtrip · 17/07/2019 13:41

Just finishing outsider and feel like I want to try another Stephen King book. I don't think I could handle anything too scary, like pet cemetery but I'm away next week so want to order another to take away.

What do fans suggest?

22 11 63 is more about time travel than a horror.

Stevienickssleeves · 17/07/2019 14:04

Was going to say 22 11 63 as well, great pageturner.

I like the gunslinger series although they are quite different from his usual fare, more fantasy based but with some great characters and storytelling

UpToonGirl · 17/07/2019 14:05

The stand, the talisman, needful things are all good without being too scary.

I would say any of his older works is way above his newer stuff, although 11 22 63 is quite new and I thought was great.

Tbh I thought outsider was his worst book and I found it quite upsetting to read... And I consider myself a huge fan!

Mr Mercedes series isn't tooo scary
My mum coped with these ones, not so much with Pet Semetary. Don't choose IT unless you want to be terrified.

sneakypinky · 17/07/2019 14:54

The Stand is easily my favourite, alongside IT but that's no good if you don't want scary.

How about the short stories? I love The Long Walk.

BettysLeftTentacle · 17/07/2019 14:56

Under the Dome, not so much horror as uncomfortable thriller.

Shoxfordian · 17/07/2019 15:00

Sleeping beauties is also fairly tame in terms of horror

MyNameIsAlexDrake · 17/07/2019 15:20

Different Seasons would be good. It's a novella with 4 different stories, two of which are well known movies, Shawshank Redemption and Stand by Me (The Body)

Someonesayroadtrip · 17/07/2019 18:11

Wow. Brilliant. Thanks.

I've always stayed away as I do scare easily, honestly I cried watching I am legend and the 6th sense 😂

So many recommendations that sound right up my street! I definitely will not be reading IT, I have watched the movie but hated it.

Off to amazon to buy some books 😂 thanks all.

22.11.63 is brilliant as one his newer ones. It's hard to chose but I think Christine is my favourite or maybe Pet Semetary. Though maybe not suitable if you don't want too scary Grin
His short stories are fantastic too, The Long Walk Is one of my favs along with The Body.

isseywithcats · 17/07/2019 18:24

the dark tower series are brilliant as is the stand,

isseywithcats · 17/07/2019 18:27

and sleeping beauties in conjunction with his son owen king one of his new ones very well written good story and hard to put down

LadyLibre · 17/07/2019 18:29

Carrie
Salems Lott is good.

BlueScreen171 · 17/07/2019 19:06

Misery, Cujo and Carrie are my favourites. Not too scary, short and easy to read. Misery in particular is a real page turner.

captainprincess · 17/07/2019 19:49

@BlueScreen171 oh Cujo, good shout!

HeyHeyMckenzie · 17/07/2019 21:01

Of his older stuff-
The Stand
Firestarter
Dark Half

More recently I loved Joytown- not horror, a bit spooky perhaps but a really easy read and quite a satisfying end.

Wellmet · 17/07/2019 21:03

I enjoyed Rose Madder.

glasshalfsomething · 17/07/2019 21:11

The Long Stand is one of the best pieces he’s ever written. Definitely recommend the collection of short stories it came in.

Misery would be my second shout and 22.11.63 after that.

Someonesayroadtrip · 17/07/2019 21:36

Can't see the long stand, just the stand. Is that the same? can't find johtown either. I have about £80 worth of books in my basket already, need to narrow it down.

captainprincess · 17/07/2019 22:05

@glasshalfsomething probably means The Long Walk. It's in a collection of short stories.
The Stand is a different novel and the absolute opposite of short 😂

HumphreyCobblers · 17/07/2019 22:09

I really like The Dead Zone. Not really a horror at all.

glasshalfsomething · 17/07/2019 22:12

I did mean the long walk. Sorry! That’s what I get for trying to multitask

HappyNOTdriving · 17/07/2019 22:24

I loved misery. I read it years ago but it was great.

It's not scary in the supernatural sort of way but it's about an author who is "saved" kidnapped by a crazed fan so it's not lighthearted either.

Willow2017 · 17/07/2019 22:52

The Dark Tower books are fab. Totally different from anything I have read before.
22.11.63 is also a great page turner.
Joyland was also a good read (I actually did read this on holiday 2 years ago Grin )
The Stand is one of my favourites.
'The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon' is another 'horror but without the actual horror'. Its a really good read with tension building without actually any horrible things happening.
His biographies/books on writing are great too even if you dont aspire to be a writer.
Different Seasons - 'The Body' is a brilliant piece on being 'misfit kids' in small towns. 'Stand by me' was one of the best film adaptations of his stories.

can't find johtown either. Its "Joyland" op Smile

BigbreastsBiggerbeard · 17/07/2019 23:27

The Stand is very scary indeed! Brilliant, but scary.
