Stephen king ... what after outsider?

Just finishing outsider and feel like I want to try another Stephen King book. I don't think I could handle anything too scary, like pet cemetery but I'm away next week so want to order another to take away.

What do fans suggest?

Oh and how could I forget, The Green Mile. One of his best novels in my opinion. Not a horror story in the normal sense but be prepared to cry many ugly snot fest tears.

I have recently re-read IT and The Shining, and was surprised all over again by how unlike the movies they were.

Having now read Dr Sleep (sequel to The Shining), I am quite looking forward to seeing how good the movie will be.

Under The Dome was last years holiday read, and I love The Green Mile and Dolores Claiborne. The Stand is my favourite King book!

I’m a fan 😉

Doctor Sleep (sequel to The Shining) is brilliant but upsetting - one part in particular.

I'm a life long Stephen King fan, misery, Carrie, the green mile, the running man far too many to mention which aren't that scary.

I'm currently re-reading The stand, it has taken me months as I read whilst waiting for DD's to come out of school.
Currently can't sleep again so might pop downstairs and get it to read in bed.

SqueakyPig · 17/07/2019 23:49

Of you enjoyed The Outsider you’d probably also enjoy The Green Mile Smile Other favourites of mine that aren’t too terrifying are Misery and The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon

ContinuityError · 17/07/2019 23:53

Needful Things is not too scary.

Gwendy’s Button Box and Joyland are quick reads but satisfying stories.

Also liked the Bill Hodges trilogy.

OldSpeclkledHen · 17/07/2019 23:59

I gave up on Sleeping Beauties 😳😳 thought it very tame!

Now reading The Outsider, it's ok!

Femodene · 17/07/2019 23:59

The Talisman! I adore it, and it’s not horror, more magical realism/fantasy than anything. I wish I could read it again for the first time 😍
Different seasons
The one with The Langoliers story in it
They’re all a lot better than The Outsider, without the grim jizz/rape descriptions 🤢

Kings books are often huge because he spends most of them developing characters and entire towns before getting to the actual story 😁

OldSpeclkledHen · 18/07/2019 00:01

Now! Is Bill Hodges from Mr Mercedes?

LeslieYep · 18/07/2019 00:42

My go to Stephen king book is Night Shift. A collection of short stories and I enjoy every one (although quitters inc is my favourite). Same with 4 past midnight. Mid length stories there mind.

Everything's eventual and from a buik 8 are 2 more collections I've read quickly!

I really enjoyed the stand, and although it's long, I don't recall it being scary, not like IT anyway!

Rose madder is like nothing I've read before, but I did find it hard to read in places. I had to put it down and come back.

Green mile and Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank redemption are amazing stories.

Also, one I've not seen mentioned is a strange one... Duma Key.

Someonesayroadtrip · 18/07/2019 19:00

I've bought a few of the short stories. However, still have a basket full of the novels and the list keeps getting longer. I've really loved hearing the recommendations and there are quite a few that seem popular with you all.

I love reading and I always have several books on the go. I have always avoided conventional horror although I'm always attracted to it.

I can't say the outsider is amazing but it's kept me engaged and wanting to read "one more chapter" so I'd like to read more.

The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon
The Dark Tower series

iklboo · 18/07/2019 19:02

Dolores Claiborne is a cracker.

Jenniferturkington · 18/07/2019 19:08

The mr Mercedes trilogy is crime rather than horror. I really enjoyed them.

The Stand is my favourite but you need to dedicate some time to it!

11.22.63 is utterly brilliant.

And I’ve just read the Bachman books, I have to say ‘The Long Walk’ was quite something.

Jon65 · 18/07/2019 19:13

The Talisman, absolutely brilliant.

HeyHeyMckenzie · 18/07/2019 19:36

@Willow2017 thank you, yes Joyland not Joytown! Dur.

rubberduckyyouretheone · 18/07/2019 19:38

11.22.63 read it several times. Also love Needful things.
