Very unsuitable hotel, WWYD?

GlamGiraffe · 17/07/2019 02:58

WWYD. please tell, it's a longish one

Booked a holiday, DH, DS(17), DD(2) and myself✈.
Explained to the travel agent i needed somewhere a suitable for both kid, in particular where DS could wander off and entertain himself alone some of the time whilst I could stay and relax with DD by a pool in a toddler friendly environment.

Committed a fair amount of money to having a nice holiday having had a dire stressful time health and work wise.
Arrived at hotel, over 100 steps, wound higledy pigbledy over cliff wihout bannisters, from property entrance to front door, virtually impossible with a buggy. No open spaces where a toddler can safely safely walk as everything is on a clifft top with no barriers or railings and sheer drops to rocks below.⛰🏞 The pool is small, is only deep, has no space around it in which to walk as it is stiffed full of loungers. A hotel with capacity for 950 has approx 200 loungers. And the poll is pretty packed with the poll from that many in. The suggested shingle beach is in fact a small concrete platform over more rock with ladders to the water. The "playground" is only suitable for kids aged maybe 8 years and is also surrounded by cliff edge drops.
Making matters worse, DD has serious dairy allergy, i checked in advance hotel had oat milk which was confirmed. The hotel have yried twice to pass hrt off with soya milk yo ehich she is also evtremely allergic- she could die. Despite this they ate oblivious. Despite caiming to stock the ost milk on the phone, on arrival they didn't even know what it was and I have to travel I hr to get it-i had space to bring it had I known.
We are totally restricted on what to do, we are at a loss. There is nothing resembling a beach nearby. We trekked to the nearest rocky scrap which is hopeless and without an inch even to swing a cat in.
Have contacted the agent explained the problem. She contacted the hotel who (surprise surprise said their hotel was totally child appropriate). There is even a hole the width of my toddler through the balcony wall-on the 9th floor.
Family is awfully stressull, I'm not in best health to be trekking in a sightseeg mission is really not what I need and that really unfair on a child who is only just 2.
There are 2, maybe 3 children we have seen here. The whole hotel, definitely the resort is catered towards the more eldery guest.
I know this is rambling. Sorry.

But WWYD?
We,re/I'm going a bit nuts; the stress is starts to show already😫😫.

I hope you work something else out, OP. Although I don't understand how you can say the steep hillside hotel "is catered towards the more elderly guest." (My dad is elderly, I know what he can't handle).

Lots of MNers recommend Cavtat but OP is putting me off. Think we'll be happier in a big city. Has anyone seen the long hotel staff response (from Gildas Renaux) on TripAdvisor. Eek.

We’ve just got back from Croatia, staying in a branch of a chain called Valamar

It was the most child-friendly hotel we’ve stayed at - more so than Club Med or Mark Warner

If anyone is keen to go to Croatia, I can highly highly recommend it
We stayed in Rabac and there was a small sandy beach, but more importantly, a huge pool area with baby pools, water slides and a brilliant kids club

Why do you think you will get a refund?

We stayed in a Valamar hotel, near Dubrovnik. I'd go back. It was lovely.

lljkk · 17/07/2019 20:46

ahem, I am looking for nice self-catering apartment somewhere in north Dubrovnik, if anyone has any tips where. :) mid August 2019 yes I know I left it late.

harridan50 · 17/07/2019 20:47

We stayed there last year, actually a really nice hotel but more adult centred. Most young children seemed to play in the indoor pool and were having fun. It is not a difficult stroll to the port and there are many nice places to eat and drink and a few small supermarkets. Nice walk around the headland passing a play area i think. Go on a boat or bus to Dubrovnik really good day out. Older son can go paddleboarding, or kyaking from the bathing platform as our daughters did. Hope you start to enjoy it it is a beautiful place

Mummyoflittledragon · 17/07/2019 20:51

Why don’t you get your ds to research the other hotels in the group and pick the most suitable one(s) and ask if you can move?

GlamGiraffe · 17/07/2019 21:04

@TheInvisibleMrsCrane
Maybe it's a late deal? I don't know then🤷‍♀️
I couldn't find it cheaper anywhere when it was suggested, obviously I looked. They wouldntcaccept my son in son in a room on his own as he was under 18 so we had to book a suite when it came it so there's no rhyme nor reason. Can you find me my next holiday please then??

We might do if you include a 'please' somewhere in your posts Grin

MarthasGinYard · 17/07/2019 21:17

Ps was joking....

RuskBaby · 17/07/2019 21:19

Sorry haven’t read everything but have stayed here. When going into town the walk by road rather than the hill straight down to the water is much more manageable.

TheInvisibleMrsCrane · 17/07/2019 21:23

My husband is the holiday booker in our family GlamGiraffe - he has much more time to look around than I do. He knows what I like and I let him get on with it - he’s never got it wrong yet. We’ve had some amazing holidays in the last few years, but back in Europe this year as he’s not well at the moment and insurance out of Europe is very expensive.

Holenewme · 17/07/2019 21:28

Only read the op but wanted to see if it was Croatia like I thought. When we went about 5 years ago almost every other Brit we spoke to was bemoaning the lack of sandy beaches. It’s really not hard to look this stuff up before hand. It’s shot about the milk though.

GlamGiraffe · 17/07/2019 21:42

@Nicknacky
The agent has suggested it today as they are very aware they have mis sold and are clearly in breach of their obligations. Unfortunately DS cant do water sports due to a medical condition we suffer from, his last attempt ended in a dislocated shoulder from simply using a canoe oar! (we have EDS!)

Nicknacky · 17/07/2019 21:47

I would be very surprised you get a refund based on what you have said here.

MarthasGinYard · 17/07/2019 21:48

'The agent has suggested it today'

What to give you a refund?Shock as simple as that.

Blimey.

Nicknacky · 17/07/2019 21:50

I think I want to book through the op’s travel agent. Go on holiday, complain about things that were pretty obvious and then get full money back.

Free holiday!!

GlamGiraffe · 17/07/2019 21:51

@LittleMissEngineer
Gosh I'm not sure I'd go with Dubai heat in the summer🤪 DH would collapse. I'm not keen on ling haul flights anymore either TBH. Have you tried Abu Dhabi? Thats amazing? Its like dubai was before it got really built up. The emirates palace is a fab hotel to stay in, give it a try instead of Dubai and see what you think if you head that way again. It's completely perfect in April.

I stayed in a Valamar Hotel in Dubrovnik too. I’d go back in a heart beat. We were in the President. It was an adult centred hotel but not adult only, there were some children. The Argosy, same chain was near too which was more child friendly.

Interestingly I nearly booked Hotel Croatia until they changed their details to show their kids club stuff.
We wanted an adults only holiday.

PancakeAndKeith · 17/07/2019 22:01

It wasn’t the Argosy that was family friendly, it was Club Dubrovnik.

Anyone along a sale does have a legal resosibilitynot to mislead ), which even as speciists they did do. That falls with them.

As ive said I did as much research I could and would always do.never had an issue like therefore.
The obvious facts you mention are ?...

I’m confused about whether you’ve spoken to the travel agent in the U.K who sold you the holiday, or the tour operator who is providing it.

Either way both parties will be keen to avoid paying out refunds.

I believe usual practice of most tour operators is to try to solve the problem in resort.

Mythdespell · 19/07/2019 23:35

Lol saving face op? They wouldn't give a refund that quickly, discuss a future credit but not refund

GlamGiraffe · 21/07/2019 02:32

I actually googled the exact same ad yo
U that day by booking.com it quoted me over 5k room only assigned 2 rooms due to the age yo the older child according and that's what the price came out at.
