Tenerife - is it nice, what resorts are quieter?

I’m thinking of booking a week all inclusive in Feb or March.

I’ve been to Lanzarote but not Tenerife, so would appreciate advice.

I want sunshine, peace to read a book and not anything that will have stag do type shenanigans at it.

I will have a car, so most locations are accessible, and I am flying into Tenerife South.

Thanks in advance

I like Adeje, it's more upmarket than Los Cristianos and Americas and the hotels are more luxury than the other resorts.

Thanks Put.

We went to Las Americas and hated it. We walked to Los Cristianos and while there's a nice a trip of restaurants between to the 2, i didnt particularly like Los Cristianos either. We also spent a day in Adeje and wished we had booked there. By far the nicest. We normally go to Lanzarote though and much prefer there.

BarbaraofSeville · 16/07/2019 12:11

Yes, you want Costa Adeje. Maybe look for a hotel with an indoor pool/spa because the weather may not be wall to wall sunshine.

Or you could consider a few days in Costa Adeje and the rest of the week in Puerto de la Cruz or the capital (Santa Cruz I think) as there's quite a lot of interest in the north of the island, but I think it's a good hour's drive each way so quite a lot on your own in addition to a full day's sightseeing, or you might be fine with this, but I'd want to see Santa Cruz, La Laguna and Puerto de la Cruz and also go over the mountain, so it might be a bit more relaxing to do this without having to drive back to the south each day. I don't think I'd go for a full week in the north at that time of year, because the weather is noticeably cooler/possibly wetter.

AngelsWithSilverWings · 16/07/2019 12:13

We went every year for 12 years as we had a time share there. Adeje is the nicest part in my opinion.

Hiring a car and doing the drive up to the top of Mount Teide is worth doing. A day trip to the north of the Island is also good. I really like the Zoo too.

I've not been to Tenerife for for 10 years now. I really miss it and want to go back soon.

Clutterfreeintraining · 16/07/2019 12:15

Medano.
Much less touristy but a good selection of cafes, bars and restaurants.

theydontknowweknow · 16/07/2019 12:22

we went to Playa La Arena in September and it's lovely and quite but there are bars/restaurants for when you want to venture out, also close enough to other places for days out

JoJoSM2 · 16/07/2019 12:49

We stayed at the Ritz in Tenerife earlier this year. It’s a big hotel but there are numerous pools (including an adult only option) and large grounds so it never feels busy. It has its own beach that you get to by a funicular.
I’m not sure if they do all inclusive but there are several restaurants including 2 with Michelin stars so good options there.

Burlea · 16/07/2019 12:52

For a really quiet resort try Golf de she.

Sianlouise432 · 16/07/2019 12:53

Los gigantes is also nice but I agree with adeje. Las americas is far too loud and night life-y.

BananaBeforeBed · 16/07/2019 14:12

Now wondering if Tenerife is not for me, and if I would be better on one of the other islands?

JoJoSM2 · 16/07/2019 14:17

Well, if you want peace and quiet and to read books, why would you stay in a touristy town anyway? It’s the same in the other Canary Islands that I’ve been to, there are some tacky busy stretches but nice, quiet bits too.

BarbaraofSeville · 16/07/2019 14:18

What's putting you off?

I would suggest Lanzarote again, unless perhaps you've already done all the main attractions like the Cesar Manrique stuff, vineyards, caves, Teguise market, volcano park etc and wouldn't want to see them again.

As long as you don't go to new town Puerto del Carmen or Costa Teguise, there's not likely to be any stags or hens.

BananaBeforeBed · 16/07/2019 14:25

I’ve been to Lanzarote twice so have some of the key attractions; I want sunshine and books, but to have some nice destinations to drive to.

I’m just worried by people saying they hated parts!

Playa de las Americas is a relatively small part of Tenerife and easy to avoid. Would you avoid all of southern England because Luton isn't very nice?

If you want to relax in an AI hotel and have some trips out, just pick a nice one not in PDLA and then go out for trips to places that do appeal.

Or if you can't even bear to come across the rowdies on the plane, perhaps none of the Canaries are for you. What about Madeira, I don't think they get stags and hens there, or certainly not the ones who start drinking at the airport at 6 am and go round in matching 'Holly's Hens' t-shirts.

coffeeaddiction · 16/07/2019 14:40

I loved Tenerife , stayed in the marylanza hotel and it was beautiful with a Short walk to everything

Luckingfovely · 16/07/2019 14:41

Personally I hate all of the Canaries - purpose built, tourist-ridden, and no local atmosphere, history, or culture at all. Unfriendly staff. Quality of hotels and resorts are shite compared to the Med. I see them as just somewhere cheap and nasty where people go to get paralytic.

Perhaps there are some slightly nicer reports, but overall it is very much similar. Depends what you are looking for I guess.

Groovee · 16/07/2019 14:47

My neighbours go to Costa Adeje every year and we're looking at going in December.

DustOffYourHighestHopes · 16/07/2019 14:47

It’s pretty easy to avoid the nasty areas. What’s the issue? It’s like travel most places of the world including London!

The Ritz-Carlton Abama is v relaxing and out of the way - the food is great if expensive and not authentically Canarian. You can do other parts of the island (capital, volcano, dolphins) on day trips.

IloveJudgeJudy · 16/07/2019 15:18

I've just come back from Tenerife. I loved it! I didn't realise it was so pretty. We stayed in Puerto de la Cruz. I really recommend the location of where we stayed, but not the actual hotels as the food was rubbish. We stayed in the Blue Sea Resorts hotels. The location was fabulous, the pools were great as were the staff. I went with DD and we went on one excursion to Teide on a VIP trip which took in the camel farm (we didn't ride the camels). We couldn't go up the cable car to the top of the volcano as it was too windy. They're improving the north coastline quite a lot. They're building some seawater pools and they're also building a kind of coastal walk where we stayed.

It was a fair trek down to the beach (and a real mission to get back up to our hotel, but it was worth it.

runningtogetskinny · 16/07/2019 22:39

We went to puerto de la cruz in March this year, I don't like bars or nightlife and I loved it. Nice walk along the main area in the evening, plenty of restaurants, no hassle or drunks. Plenty of places to walk and a peaceful holiday with good weather. I'm going back in October Smile

Dowser · 16/07/2019 22:45

We go to Tenerife, pdla for our three winter holidays
We love it
Can’t stand Adeje
It’s soulless
Los Cris is lovely and not at all stag or henny

Stay in the el camison area of pdla

simbobs · 16/07/2019 22:51

Los Gigantes, been there several times but only in apartments. There is just one hotel which is adult only which may be just what you want. It is close to Playa la Arena and there is an area in between the 2 resorts which has more hotels.

woodenplank · 16/07/2019 22:52

We went at Easter, stayed in the South, Golf del Sur so away from the worst bits, but the North is so, so much nicer. Go North, stay away from the holiday resorts. Best museums etc in the North, much nicer towns, far fewer sunburnt English tourist eating cheap breakfasts and drinking crap beer. We're not going back to Tenerife, or any other tourist resort ever. But glad we tried it, and it does have some beautiful scenery, beaches and buildings. In the North. North. It's only an hour from the South - best spent hour of your holiday!
