Need quick advice... Should I take DS back to doctors or A&E?

DS19 woke up yesterday morning with one side of his face swollen, took him straight to doctors who prescribed a 10 day course of 100mg Doxycycline capsules. This morning he's woken up and it's swollen even more, his right eye is so puffy it's barely open. Should I take him back to doctors, A&E or ride out the course?

Ask yourself why A&E?

Then call your GP.

marvellousnightforamooncup · 16/07/2019 08:16

Call NHS direct. I wouldn't hang about though, a swelling on the head is a worry.

GlassSuppers · 16/07/2019 08:23

Not A&E unless he's in pain.

Ring your GP but if he only started taking medication for it yesterday it may be too soon to see results yet.

Hope he gets better soon!

I'm going to go against the grain and say a and e. It won't be too busy this morning, but if the infection is supra orbital it can be quite serious quite quickly.
My 3 year old got a swollen eye, looked a bit like allergy. Took him to an a and e but it was Saturday night and he wasn't seen for 5 hours. Nurse had mentioned discharging with Piriton. Finally he saw a doctor who made me rush him up to the children's hospital where he had iv antibiotics for 4 days. (and gave me a lecture about waiting to have him seen... Er I didn't! I was here 5 hours ago!).
I know most people think that a and e wouldn't be appropriate but if a facial infection is worsening I would go.

A&E! This could be preseptal cellulitis (hard to say over an internet forum but not worth the risk)

cees · 16/07/2019 08:42

A&E for me to, infections can get into the brain.

NothingBreaksLikesAHeart · 16/07/2019 08:43

Ps its painless so lack of pain is not a reason to not go to a&e

PonderingPanda · 16/07/2019 08:48

I think GP. He hasn't had enough A/B yet to make a difference. If they're not happy they can fast track you to ENT/maxfax at the hospital

MumGoneCrazy · 16/07/2019 08:48

Phoned nhs direct, spoke to a nurse who said due to eye swelling and blurred vision I need to get him straight to a&e so we're on way there now. Thanks for all the replies.

I would go to A&E - I think the tablets aren't helping enough quickly enough and IV antibiotics may be needed.

Kittenance · 16/07/2019 08:53

X-post glad you are on your way. Good luck.

BlueCornsihPixie · 16/07/2019 08:54

If it's closing his eye A&E

BlueCornsihPixie · 16/07/2019 08:55

Glad your taking him!

notapizzaeater · 16/07/2019 08:55

Glad you are on way. Hope they help.

mumof23188 · 16/07/2019 08:55

A&E. swelling that is reaching his eye is dangerous!

SoupDragon · 16/07/2019 08:56

Under similar circumstances with DS2 I took him to the GP who referred us to A&E. He ended up staying for about 3 days with IV antibiotics with oral ones at home after.

Glad you're going to hospital - I hope you don't have a long wait!

CitadelsofScience · 16/07/2019 08:57

Glad to see you're on your way because I was going to say due to it being around the eye it would be A&E.

AnotherEmma · 16/07/2019 08:58

If in doubt always call 111 and don't ask mumsnet. I'm glad you didn't follow the advice of the first few posters 🙄

A patient should be getting better, not worse, after 24h of antibiotics.

NothingBreaksLikesAHeart · 16/07/2019 08:59

Phew!

marvellousnightforamooncup · 16/07/2019 09:01

I was one of the first posters and she took my advice and is getting the right help Emma.

Hope he's feeling better soon.

chzarind · 16/07/2019 09:32

I'm glad you didn't follow the advice of the first few posters 🙄

I said GP, no need for the eye roll.

The GP would have sent them on to A&E. Calling 111 or calling the GP would have had the same result.

GlassSuppers · 16/07/2019 09:44

Sorry @AnotherEmma

At least an expert like you came along to give the right advice 🙄🙌🏻

MumGoneCrazy · 16/07/2019 09:57

Been seen by triage nurse and now waiting for a xray

ATrampsVest · 16/07/2019 09:58

Hope he's ok OP, sounds scary.

AnotherEmma · 16/07/2019 11:14

Glad you didn't have to wait too long to be seen OP.

(marvellous I wasn't referring to your post earlier!)
