Teething - is this really it?

I have a very happy 26wk old dd, barely ever cries until today!!!!

She has a temperature, I was getting between 38 and 38.4 but when got her to GPS they got 37.4. Her temp has varied between those temperatures all day according to my thermometer. She has had 2 2.5ml doses of calpol which don't seem to have done anything for her really but probably helped with the temperature.

Could this be teething? How long will this part last? I know its a stage they have to go through but bloody hell it's heartbreaking seeing her in tears every two minutes.

The nurse practitioner we saw said she had a sore throat so it could be that but she is the right age for teeth, maybe they will go hand in hand.

I haven't tried any teething relief yet as she doesn't have rosey cheeks so I'm not entirely sure it is teeth. I wish I knew!! Scared myself shirtless reading about anbesol and all the different gels too. Is it possible to get through it with calpol alone?

Well I have just cheered myself up with scared myself shirtless. Oops. She does have a matchstick monkey and various nuby teethers she likes to chomp on. Also tried the cold flannel which she wasn't keen on. Have made a formula ice lolly for tomo to try.

Varies. The first few weren't bad for DD but all hell broke loose when she got her first molars. Ear infections, fever, malaise and misery. Was awful. Calpol did help a lot but she needed antibiotics for the ear infection in the end.

Keep a close eye on her, make sure you know what the symptoms for meningitis and sepsis are and give lots of cuddles. I feel for you, it's awful when they are ill, especially when it's the first time.

What's wrong with Anbesol? Shock

@crunchymum if they swallow too much of it they can sustain brain damage or die iirc. TBH I think you'd have to completely ignore the instructions and be devoid of common sense in your use of it to cause any problems.

Rarfy · 15/07/2019 21:29

That's good advice. I am up to scratch on meningitis but will brush up on sepsis. When she is awake she is alert and with it just miserable which is the complete opposite to her normal temperament. Yes, first time she has been poorly apart from a minor cold.

I didn't expect this for teeth so maybe it is the throat and she will feel better tomo, here's hoping.

Sounds like I'll be in for it eventually though, poor babies having to go through it all. Sounds like yours had a tough time.

I'd keep a close eye on a high temperature in a young baby and not just assume it was teething. A fever is a response to an infection and technically teeth coming through shouldn't cause a raise in temperature (although anecdotally many parents would say otherwise!)

I've looked after lots of babies and many of them aren't really affected by teething. The little one I'm looking after at the moment has only had a couple of grumpy moments that calpol and something cold to chew on dealt with. Oh and endless drooling that is still going on at 2yrs old!

hormonesorDHbeingadick · 15/07/2019 21:30

Nurofen is better than calpol. Anbesol oil is also very good.

Rarfy · 15/07/2019 21:31

An article came up about the American version saying their baby had a seizure and stopped breathing and it can be a side effect of the main ingredient.

I know it's completely over the top to worry about, all meds come with the risk of side effects but I am a massive worrier. Had a stillborn and put it down to that, this is and will be my only live one.

Not necessarily, some kids sail through it. And it can vary from tooth to tooth. Hope your little one feels better soon.

Rarfy · 15/07/2019 21:34

Thank you. That makes sense about the temperature. Maybe it is just a sore throat. We had our first swim at the wkend and she did get a mouthful of water. Not sure if that could cause anything.

She has shown some strong signs of teeth for about 3 months but no signs of teeth yet. They only one missing is rosey cheeks, she's not got or had those yet.

DS1 liked to suck ice cubes.

If you’re brave you can massage the gums - it helps and you may be able to feel the teeth coming through and the apply topical relief (we used kids Bongela). You may also nearly lose a finger as your DC chomps on you...

Rarfy · 15/07/2019 21:40

I've massaged her gums she can tolerate it for a bit, can't feel any teeth. I have a good feel around but paying most attention to the front bottom.

A couple of mine got really awful nappy rash when teething, they went from nothing to red raw in a change.

Fantababy · 15/07/2019 22:18

My DD had a high temperature and was utterly miserable when she had tonsillitis. Check if her breath smells. Was a giveaway for us.

Rarfy · 15/07/2019 22:27

Yes the nurse did say to kp an eye on smelly breath with her throat looking sore. No nappy rash as yet.

Ashton and Pearson's powders are like crack for teething babies (in a good way!). There's are other powders too - think they're called teetha?

Muchtoomuchtodo · 15/07/2019 22:43

I blamed most disturbed nights / difficult days on teething if I couldn’t find anything else visibly wrong! It made me feel better to have a cause!

I used calpol, bonjella and Ashton and parsons as well as cold tethers. No idea what (if any) really helped but at least I felt better for trying!!

Rarfy · 15/07/2019 23:57

Thanks everyone. Feel so sad for her. Don't feel like calpol is helping with her temperature not sure what to do. She is in a nappy and short sleeved vest.

Any better now?

Pinkiii · 16/07/2019 06:01

My DD was utterly miserable when she was teething, the bottom 2 she was fine with then her top ones started to come through, she also had a high temp for a night and doctors couldn’t find any causes, anyways 4 teeth popped out around the same time and since then she has been a delight again. Also I found nurofen worked better for us with teething than calpol

Hope you find whats causing issues.

Firefly111 · 16/07/2019 06:16

Hope she’s feeling better this morning!

Rarfy · 16/07/2019 06:57

No better. Every time she opens her eyes she's in tears this is awful.

No sign of any teeth this morning. Have just given her a 5ml dose of calpol will see how she gets on with that but think I will take her to a doctor if I can get her in. I can't quite believe all this would be for teeth unless as someone else suggested she gets a handful at once.

OP posts:
Rarfy · 16/07/2019 06:57

Will also get some neurofuen to try today as she's never had that yet.

ReganSomerset · 16/07/2019 12:17

Oh dear. Poor mite. Have you seen the doctor yet?

ReganSomerset · 16/07/2019 12:18

If inconsolable for over three hours, crying doesn't change when picked up or sensitive to light, go straight to a and e with her.
