Has anyone got one? What are they like to ride? Up hill? Can you get it through your front door?!

My stepdad has one for some reason, I don't think he's ever actually ridden it though. It just sits in the conservatory, it wouldn't fit through the door into the house its far too wide.

Kissez · 15/07/2019 19:04

I was wondering if you can get them in, at an angle? If not, I might get a folding one. But want to ask if they are ok also

I'm looking for a folding tricycle, the cheapest I've seen them new is £300 or £150 in good knick on FB marketplace.

I've left it too long to learn to ride 2 wheels and have zero natural balance.

timeandtimeagain42 · 15/07/2019 19:16

Oh I've been wondering about this, I'd love to cycle places and go on bike rides but my balance is awful and I'd never feel safe on a two wheel bike. Would love an adult tricycle but would I just feel stupid, like an enormous toddler?

Kissez · 15/07/2019 19:19

Ah, I'm happy to spend a bit more. Particularly want aluminium and 6 gears, not 3. I'm looking at these 2 at the minute

They are awesome.

Big basket at the back (sister has a gomier) means it's good for shopping, or you can carry all the picnic gear/kids stuff/the dog.

Most fit through a standard gate.

Biggest con is that it can't be easily transported by car so you can only ride places near home.

My father borrows my sister's regularly despite having his own bike and access (often) to my mother's electric bike. He likes the easy storage when going shopping.

I rode an electric bakfiets trike for 5 years as main mode of transport. Kids are older now and life changed but will have a new (still 3 wheels) soon.

Go for it. Trial before buying because the cheaper ones can be hard to ride. You DO want gears.

Progress2019 · 15/07/2019 19:25

I think they’re lovely and I’d love to own one. Very expensive but I think they’d be worth it. I’ve also looked at stabilisers for an adult sized bike.

RubbingHimSourly · 15/07/2019 19:34

My Ds has tricycles.

Mission trikes are really good, he has the mission hybrid mountain trike which is light frame with gears.

He's just upgraded to the jorvik, folding electric trike (( DS is disabled and will never drive so this was his little way of coping )) so far it's really good quality. We paid extra for a basket with a lid that closes (( he calls it his boot )) cost just under 2 grand all in. But none electric are closer to £400. They also sell ex display models

Funnily enough I'm sorting his old bike out to sell so if you're after a cheap deal and can cover courier costs let me know !

Kissez · 15/07/2019 19:34

I don't mind the cost. I've become disabled and both driving and 2 wheel bike riding have become problematic; so it's going to be main method of transport. Hopefully! If it works out

I really want one too but then realised they were so difficult to transport, I wouldn’t be able to take it on holiday which is when I would get the most use out of it. I also read that they are not actually that stable but not sure how true that is. Interested to hear if you go for it.

Regarding the folding trikes ds opted for the largest sized trike. Which is limited in its folding. The smaller ones fold down much smaller, including handle bars and will fit in a car boot. There's a video on the jorvik website showing this.

RubbingHimSourly · 15/07/2019 19:39

They are also quite wide. Almost a meter, well my son's is because he opted for the largest one. We had to hack a chunk out the back gate but it wasn't anything a hack saw couldn't solve.

Kissez · 15/07/2019 19:45

I can only access back garden through house. Only tiny front yard. Hmmmm...

OP posts:
Kissez · 15/07/2019 19:46

Also, I'm 5'10" so I am looking at 26"

OP posts:
RubbingHimSourly · 15/07/2019 19:56

Kissez I'd travel to York or whatever retailer you go with to try one out. My son's about 6ft and tbh the 24inch was absolutely fine. We keep it in our small yard with 3, indestructible bike locks on.

RubbingHimSourly · 15/07/2019 19:57

And take measurements but 24 inch folded you could probably get through the house. As the front wheel tucks under the back. Look at the measurements tho and take measurements.

Kissez · 15/07/2019 20:04

Oh really? That's good news. 24" gives loads more options. Thanks x

Contact the editor of A to B magazine and I think he could provide, or point you towards a lot of useful info. It could be back issues of the magazine. You really want to end up with the right machine. [email protected]

starzig · 15/07/2019 20:27

Where would you ride It? You can't really ride it on the road or the pavement and most cycle paths would be too narrow.

MadamePompadour · 15/07/2019 20:30

I have a folding recumbent trike. I love it. It's an Ice Sprint.

It goes through a standard back gate and lives in the shed....unfolded. folded up it goes in my estate car.

It's hard going uphill but this may be the recumbent aspect as your feet can end up above your head. So hard to power down. Fast as hell downhill.

MadamePompadour · 15/07/2019 20:32

And I ride mine on roads and cycle paths. Not found a cycle path where the width has been an issue yet.

MrsCasares · 15/07/2019 20:34

I’ve got a Jorvik electric tricycle in purple. I’ve zero balance so can’t ride a bike. I love it. I’m a shortie so have the smaller wheels.

It’s so much fun, but we have loads of safe cycle lanes where I live.

SubisYodrethwhenLarping · 15/07/2019 20:37

DC has one he got it to take to university

The front folds so it goes in half lengthways iyswim

It has huge basket on the back

(It does go in the front door)

Kissez · 15/07/2019 23:07

Ooooo...I'm a bit scared of the recumbent trikes. The ice sprint looks good though, but they are a lot more expensive. Hmmm... definitely something to think about
