Cheap dry dog food

Where do you buy yours?

For the record, I've always fed my lab premium dog food but she's not been well so my vets had advised to feed her on the cheap stuff to see if it Makes a difference which is fine by me as money is tight!

Depends how cheap you wanna go I suppose

My two are fed a brand called seven which is completely grain free.
I think it’s something like £10.99 for a 2kg bag which lasts my 2 chis a good few weeks.

I buy it from a local independent pet store but I know you can get it online

mrsmoppp · 15/07/2019 18:33

My dog loves the aldi dry food I think around £5 for a 10kg bag

Soola · 15/07/2019 18:38

Chappie dry. Beef or chicken. Saved our dogs life when he was ill.

I would never have bought it as I thought it was on a par with Bakers but it’s excellent. Low fat but great for digestion.

I give my spaniel the Wagg 'Working Dog' food, it's £4-5 for a big bag and is the only one we've had that doesn't upset his stomach!

DogbertDogglesworth · 15/07/2019 18:46

I give mine a brand called Wagg. It's around £8 for a big sack in supermarkets. She loves it, but to be fair I tend to make a bit of oxo gravy to pour over it. Spoilt sod she is.

Defender90 · 15/07/2019 18:48

Chappie is a great go to for sensitive tums and sensitive on the purse as well I believe.

RB68 · 15/07/2019 18:50

I used winalot and have just switched up to another slightly more expensive one. Winalot one was 3.00 or 3.50 depending if an offer for 2 - 3 kg

Stillmonday · 15/07/2019 18:51

Fab I'll give chappie & wag a go

Some of the foods mentioned here are full of rubbish. The website 'all about dog food' is great for seeing how good or bad your dogs food is.

Stillmonday · 15/07/2019 20:52

Yes that's exactly why I need it @PregnantWithThird

VetOnCall · 16/07/2019 06:28

What is wrong with your dog that your vet has recommended trying any random cheap food to improve? Did they give any other specifications apart from 'cheap'? It's a bit odd as there are a lot of cheap dog foods to choose from, with hugely varying ingredients (although likely all uniformly low quality), so just picking one at random is an unlikely way to resolve existing issues.

AvocadosBeforeMortgages · 16/07/2019 08:31

Www.allaboutdogfood.co.uk is an excellent website for finding dog foods

But ditto what @VetOnCall said

Stillmonday · 16/07/2019 14:36

She's leaving a poo stamp whenever she sits down ☹️

TheSproutOfWrath · 16/07/2019 17:30

We use Dr John Silver at work. Its around a tenner for a 15kg bag. I know two labs that do really well on it.

VetOnCall · 16/07/2019 23:57

You mean she's leaking faeces? Or her poo is very loose and is sticking to her fur when she goes?

Floralnomad · 17/07/2019 00:02

I cannot imagine how feeding a cheap food , which will be full of fillers and crap and will hence create more poo is going to help this problem .

Stillmonday · 17/07/2019 11:20

Her poo is quite soft but it doesn't stick to her fur, I've checked her bum after and it's clean. it's just when she sits down somehow she leaves a stamp ☹️

Cocobeanstalk · 17/07/2019 11:44

Er, yeh op feeding her wagg which is full of..well god knows what, will absolutely NOT improve her at all.
She is more likely allergic to something in her current food Hmm

AvocadosBeforeMortgages · 17/07/2019 14:21

I'm not a raw feeding evangelist, but it might be worth trying - particularly if you use it as a way to only feed one protein source (eg lamb) and then add one in at a time to try and work out if there's a dietary intolerance going on.

There are complete raw diets available, though with some research you can DIY. It can't be enormously expensive to DIY raw feed - one of our local homeless gentlemen has an enormous mastiff who is raw fed (butcher's offcuts mostly, he tells me) - and his dog is the picture of health.

Nesssie · 17/07/2019 14:33

Try Chappie, its suppose to be gentle on stomachs and good for allergies.

Soola · 17/07/2019 14:35

Raw is brilliant for some dogs.

We tried it, gave it a very long trial but it was a disaster. Dogs started shedding, coats were sill and their stools were loose and yellowy.

They had bad wind and low energy which they never had before and we stopped.

The ill dog that went in then Chappie went from a skeletal frame to a lovely weight with great muscle tone, beautiful shiny coat, low/no shed, rare to have wind and firm low odour stools.

The vet was amazed at the transformation.

Chappie was a god send.

MattMagnolia · 17/07/2019 19:56

Vets spend very little time on nutrition during training and usually have the same ignorance and prejudices as the general public.
However our old vet always recommended Chappie and told owners to feed a poor brand to dogs with skin problems.

Littleindiangirl · 17/07/2019 20:03

We use James Wellbeloved Grain Free and our dog also leaves a bit of a poo mark. Would you mix Chappie in with the dry food? In the past, she has loved the wet food and spat out the dry. What would you mix with the Chappie?

TheInebriati · 17/07/2019 20:08

Have her anal glands been emptied? Has she been checked for giardia? - some dogs show no symptoms but they can infect you.

For a dog that has runny stools I wouldn't suggest canned meat, look at complete dry kibble.

dementedpixie · 17/07/2019 20:08

Chappie does dry food too
