So we should be washing our pants at 60 degrees.

This morning cleaning expert says our pants should be washed at 60 degrees. How does that work then? If you've to wash the rest of your gear (apart from towels etc which I wouldn't wash with ma pants anyway) at a lower temp, are we just supposed to save up 50 pairs of dirty pants until you have a full load of dirty knickers? It's all very confusing you know ...

But, but, what about the fanny bugs that the expert lady was worried about? She seemed to be most concerned about this.

I'm sitting here wondering how the hell I'm still alive at 52 to be honest.

I wash pants at 60 and always did. There is only a limited loss due to this. The only exception are the expensive ones which are only worn with pantyliners and go in a delicate setting. With the matching bra.

I wash white knickers together with white towels and white sheets. Black or blue knickers go with DH’s boxers and dark towels. Other towels go with bedding. I wash around every 2 weeks,

Alarmclockstop · 15/07/2019 20:35

Tbf fanny bugs are pretty low down on my list of things to be worried about my tea towel catching. We live on a farm so fuck knows what ends up on my trousers.
Although once a month I do use the boil wash mainly to clean the washing machine

SlinkyDogDash · 15/07/2019 20:35

I thought we were supposed to be saving the planet? Wash at 60 degrees and the polar bear dies. My laundry gets washed at 30 or 40 degrees, no sick days for me or dcs for years.

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 15/07/2019 20:38

I wash absolutely everything all in the same load at 30. No matter what it is or what colour it is. No ones died yet.

lazylinguist · 15/07/2019 21:32

So all these people who wash everything at 30 or 40 - why haven't any of them died of fanny bugs? I wonder if the expert lady has ever even met anyone afflicted by improperly washed fanny bugs.

orangeshoebox · 15/07/2019 21:47

you just need to read threads here about thrush that won't go away.
it won't go away if you keep reinfecting yourself...

Windygate · 15/07/2019 21:56

What happens in countries where cold washing and cold wash detergent are the norm?

dementedpixie · 15/07/2019 22:01

Surely even if the germs arent killed they are washed away by the soap and water so it doesn't matter what temperature they are washed at

PancakeAndKeith · 15/07/2019 22:02

Would never do them at 40, its not hot enough to clean them properly.

Yes it is. What do you think will be left?

What do people think is going to get from their fanny on to their pants and back again?

CarrieBlu · 15/07/2019 22:03

For the people who don’t wash their bras everyday, how often are you washing them? I change my bra everyday for a fresh one, sometimes twice if I’m exercising and they get washed every time. Surely they get smelly and sweaty like any other piece of clothing in close contact with your body so need changing daily?

MyHairNeedsASnip · 15/07/2019 22:04

I like to do a socks and jocks wash every week at 60. Except for white ones, they get bunged in with the towels at 60 because I reckon towels have bums on them anyway.

IfOnlyOurEyesSawSouls · 15/07/2019 22:08

Eughhh to people who dont wash underwear , towels & bedding at 60.

As a nurse im only too aware that its basic hygiene as it kills germs & bacteria.

Bleugh.

IfOnlyOurEyesSawSouls · 15/07/2019 22:10

@PancakeAndKeith ... no it isnt hot enough.

Do not of you get fungal infections, colds, D&V, worms etc in your houses ??

IfOnlyOurEyesSawSouls · 15/07/2019 22:11

Absolutely @orangeshoebox .

dementedpixie · 15/07/2019 22:11

But washing will wash those things away whether that are killed or not

IfOnlyOurEyesSawSouls · 15/07/2019 22:12

Erm no it doesn't @dementedpixie !!

Trust me im an infection prevention lead !!!

Yabbers · 15/07/2019 22:16

Pants, socks and towels go in at 60. We have a full load of,them in a week.

Somersetlady · 15/07/2019 22:17

Thats why i go commando no pant washing to worry about Wink

StephanieSJW · 15/07/2019 22:18

Garbage!
Just think of the environmental impact if everyone in China and India took this advice.
I would like to know this so-called "expert's credentials.

All the popular "stories" about washing and cleaning - e.g. you must shower every single day have been sold to us by the soap and cosmetic manufacturers

Shower every day!! Completely dry out all the natural oils in your skin!!! Then buy artificial moisturizers (all packaged in more plastic) to stop your skin feeling so dry and washed out!!!

moanyhole · 15/07/2019 22:19

Everything is bunged in at 40 here with no care for color or type of laundry. Everyone fine and well. If theres anyone with a bug ill use some napisan but still at 40.

IfOnlyOurEyesSawSouls theres a difference between incontinent ill patients in a hospital setting and a normal non ill healthy family setting. Not comparable

I do wear a fresh bra everyday though. I whear shoulder boulders and they tend to go high under my armpit so need a wash by the end of the day. In the winter Ill get a couple of days.

Iamthewombat · 15/07/2019 22:20

If I were looking for expert advice, I wouldn’t seek it on This Morning.

lljkk · 15/07/2019 22:21

Everything together at 30 here. Since I can't remember ... Last 13 yrs?
by some kind of miracle we're still alive and well.

StephanieSJW · 15/07/2019 22:24

I am reminded of the true story of the toothpaste manufacturer who went to the world's leading marketing expert at the time to ask how how they could double their sales...

His answer?

Make the nozzle of the toothpaste tube twice as big and in every commercial show a curl of toothpaste being squeezed on to the entire length of the head of the toothbrush....Most of it of gets spat out immediately but what the fuck do they care?

Consumers need to consume LESS if we have any hope of having a planet fit to live on for generations to come.

Badcat666 · 15/07/2019 22:28

Weirdly I've never washed my under carriage garments at 60 and have survived! Neither did my mum and she had 7 kids ffs. Amazingly none of us had worms, fungal infections or the black plague.

Also when I have a cold I don't tend to whip off my fanny coverings, blow my nose and put them back on again.

My washing machine died and couldn't afford a new one so now I wash everything in my lovely wonder wash so no idea what the temp is as you can't have it boiling, more like tepid. After 3 minutes of handle turning and a rinse everything is lovely and clean. In fact oddly Mr BC's work shirts come out seriously white. Used to soak them in stain remover before when using the machine and I do the same now but it's like they've been bleached.

towels and bed linen get a naice boil soak overnight then hot hand wash the next day with a up and downer old fashioned pluncher thingie. Neither of us have died yet.

Maybe the "expert" has privates riddled with genital warts and weeping yeast infections and a tapeworm living in their fudge tunnel and think everyone else does as well?
