So we should be washing our pants at 60 degrees.

This morning cleaning expert says our pants should be washed at 60 degrees. How does that work then? If you've to wash the rest of your gear (apart from towels etc which I wouldn't wash with ma pants anyway) at a lower temp, are we just supposed to save up 50 pairs of dirty pants until you have a full load of dirty knickers? It's all very confusing you know ...

Clothes do not come out of the washing machine crawling with bacteria, they just don’t.
Anyone scaremongering about the ability to transfer faeces to your coffee cup via a washed pair of pants doesn’t deserve space in anyone’s head.

JanewaysBun · 15/07/2019 15:18

Dark clothes and pants 40
All baby stuff 40 sometimes 60
Light colours 40
Towels 90
Tea towels and oven gloves 60
White pants and bed sheet - 60 then hang on line with gussets facing the sun to be bleached
Reds 40
Bras and tights - 30 but low spin cycle to be delicate
Duvet covers 60 or 40 depending on how much dh has sweated

Plus any specific washes needed like sports wear/wool etc

It's the way I've always done it!

voddiekeepsmesane · 15/07/2019 15:26

OMG how ever did I get to nearly fifty with washing everything at 40, surely I must be dead by now?!

CitadelsofScience · 15/07/2019 15:48

Janeways honestly just everything in together and your life will be magically transformed.

I hate laundry with a passion so I've no inclination although I do have the time to fanny about with separate loads.

StealthPolarBear · 15/07/2019 17:57

I wear a cln bra every day am I alone

orangeshoebox · 15/07/2019 18:16

anyone with recurrent uti or thrush or worms should wash pants/bedding/towels at 60.

AnneTwacky · 15/07/2019 18:16

I'm not sure what the point of washing your pants at 60 would be.
To kill bacteria, you would have to boil them.
If anyone's really worried then there's always that anti-bac laundry additive.

maddiemookins16mum · 15/07/2019 18:20

Nothing here gets washed at over 30c and hasn’t for years.

lazylinguist · 15/07/2019 18:22

If I washed one pair of pants at 30, one at 40 and one at 60, they would all be clean and you wouldn't be able to tell the difference (and neither would your fanjo or coffee cup). People do fret about silly things.

AnyFucker · 15/07/2019 18:25

I just throw mine over the back fence into next doors garden

ThighsRelief · 15/07/2019 18:29

Well, I tried, I just couldn't boil and separate everything correctly.

I'm now drying dishes with my fanny and cutting out the middle man.

springtime12 · 15/07/2019 18:40

I change and wash my work bras every day. I work in a hospital and am always hot and sweaty so clean one every day.

At home, maybe a bra will last 2 days as I'm not so sweaty!

CitadelsofScience · 15/07/2019 18:44

Thighs this is good to know because on another thread they're speculating whether the D of C is pregnant again. I've said it must be tiresome just being on uterus watch so to have a live fanny dishes drying commentary would be very exciting! Grin

iknowimcoming · 15/07/2019 18:52

This sort of thing really boils my piss (and i know I should get out more) but seriously I growl every time I see that dettol wash additive stuff advert on tv. Perhaps we could have a roll call of how many people on here know someone who got ill from washing their pants with their tea towels? If there was still harmful bacteria left behind from the pants surely the washer would be contaminated anyway and would pass the germs onto the tea towels when they were washed? Or should we have different washing machines for different items to be really sure? I am old and grumpy but surely we've all survived this long with many of us washing pants with other items to make a case that this really is fine?

Ps - I do btw totally get the 60 degree wash thing for those with skin complaints Wink

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 15/07/2019 18:53

We do everything at 40, and this includes fifth wheel grease, geriatric effluvia and sriracha.
The pp who thinks UV is witchcraft: you should see what a welding arc does to cotton overalls! You can actually crumble the fabric after a month.

DogbertDogglesworth · 15/07/2019 18:54

Pffft. Just bin the pants and go commando. Problem solved.

Disclaimer. I don't go commando.

carsleyladiessociety · 15/07/2019 18:54

Is this the best time to admit to putting things like tea towels in with the wee wash (ds still isn't dry at night). It all comes out clean at the end, and no I dont give a stuff about bugs and germs.

I wash my white uniform tunics on a 90 degree wash, mainly because I seem to have a horrible habit of leaving uncapped pens in the pockets. It's the only way to get them clean and pen free

TinyMystery · 15/07/2019 19:00

I was cloth nappies at 40, they have no stains and smell fresh. Why on earth would I wash my own pants at 60?!

DogbertDogglesworth · 15/07/2019 19:00

I wondered why I kept getting pants in my back garden @AnyFucker. 😮

I thought my DH had another woman so I threw his clothes into bin bags, changed the locks and went for my free 30 mins divorce advice with a solicitor.

Your union Jack ones have been hoisted on the flag pole. 😁

SallyWD · 15/07/2019 19:01

I've been doing this for years!! I throw them in with towels, bedding etc to get a full load

Emmabryant123 · 15/07/2019 19:02

Towels and bedding and tea towels all in together at 60c

Socks pants and clothes all in at 30c
Never been a issue here

DogbertDogglesworth · 15/07/2019 19:02

@Carsleyladiessociety. If you spray the ink well with hairspray and leave to dry, it will wash out easily.

ineedtostopbeingsolazy · 15/07/2019 19:02

I was bedding, towels and tea towels on 60, I usually chuck pants in too.
Everything else is washed on 40.

LegionOfDoom · 15/07/2019 19:14

I wash all my clothes on 40 all mixed together. Sheets and towels on 60. Nets/curtains on quick wash at 30. In the winter I usually add a scoop of napisan just to disinfect it. In the summer I line dry so the sun kills of bacteria anyway
