Wedding dress fuck up... 6 months until wedding

partyinapark · 14/07/2019 18:06

I went for my dress fitting today and they completely fucked up the measurements in the bust (my boobs are 32J and this cup was about a C cup). There's nothing they can do to alter it and they said a new dress wouldn't be ready until at least October. Wedding is November.

I have totally lost confidence in them and do not trust them to do it right. I think I need to ask for the deposit back and go to a completely different shop for a new dress. But is it too late? And can anyone advise on wedding dresses for big boobs please?? Will they give me my deposit back?

I definitely want to get my deposit back and look elsewhere for a different dress. They have already said they would have to get it remade from scratch as there isn't enough material to work with.

Can I just double check that they are at fault here and that I'm entitled to the deposit back? The lady took my measurements, she knew about my boob issues and assured me the dress would be fine and made so that I wouldn't have cleavage etc. She now maintains that she told us it would be a standard size and she ordered a size 16 (not true but even if it was, she should have ordered about a size 20 so that it fit the bust, and then could have been taken in around the waist and hips)

So... Am I entitled to my money back?

Don’t believe bridal shops telling you it takes six months to make a dress; it’s rubbish. I had a Claire Pettibone dress made to order in LA and shipped over, and despite huffing and puffing from the bridal shop about me cutting it very fine, it arrived in under four months, with plenty of time for final alterations.

VenusClapTrap · 15/07/2019 08:23

And yes, you are entitled to your money back! They failed to deliver what was ordered and you have lost faith.

Thank you. I am going to compose an email today. Wish me luck!

Another vote for Wed2b - I'm a 32G and the size 14 dress I have picked fits perfectly - few adjustments of course but I can wear the dress without a bra!

sashh · 15/07/2019 08:44

Ask for compensation as well. I doubt you will get it but it might make them quicker to give you your money back.

partyinapark · 15/07/2019 08:57

Wow pepper... Without a bra!!! That just seems inconceivable for me.

I will ask for compo, fuck it, why not.

Another vote for wed2b. Mine was from there and was amazed by the choice. I also brought it 6 months before wedding and on trying on 8 weeks before had lost too much weight and needed a far smaller dress and they let me exchange for two sizes less-couldn’t have been more helpful.

stucknoue · 15/07/2019 09:15

There's a shop out in Essex that's on the tv, they have larger brides. Otherwise try secondhand shops too, oxfam have bridal, you never know - just then get it altered to fit

Pepperstripe · 15/07/2019 09:21

@partyinapark - I know!!!! I can't even wear strapless bras normally as no support! I'm so pleased this dress has all the bust support built in and looks great!

partyinapark · 15/07/2019 09:22

Pepper what is the name of the dress and designer?? You can pm me with it if you like. I'd love to see the style x

Also just to thank everyone, I am taking all suggestions on board.

You’re also heading in to sample sale season as the summer months are quieter for wedding shops so that’s when they typically rotate stock etc.

I went to both these places in Wimbledon but sure there might be options closer to you:

theweddingdressshop.co.uk/
www.teokath.co.uk/the-white-room/sample-sale/

I spent some extra money putting in a corset back to get the best boob/waist fit, it was about £100 but worth it as opened up lots of dress options but does depend on the style you want.

partyinapark · 15/07/2019 09:40

The dress shop I bought this dress is in Wimbledon! But not one of the two you linked.

I also tried on in Teokath.

This dress has a corset back, I chose it for that reason.

Did you pay on credit card? If the shop are resistant to paying back your deposit you could contact the CC company for a charge back.

partyinapark · 15/07/2019 10:01

Good point. My mum paid the deposit - I will ask her

Wed2B does have an excellent selection, just make sure you check the dress over very carefully, and if it has 15 million buttons, make them do them all up in the shop!!

I tried one on, lived it, but the assistant only did up a few of the buttons at the back just to get the idea.. I bought the dress then when trying it on a week later my mum noticed there were either too many/too few buttons 😐 nightmare!

They offered to 'fix' it, which I let them attempt, but when I went back to try it on it still wasn't right, so I eventually got a refund.

They were fine about it but the whole thing took a lot of time and left me with 2 months to find a dress! I managed it so I'm sure you'll be fine, but definitely when buying off the rack, go over everything with a fine tooth comb!

partyinapark · 15/07/2019 11:01

Thanks for the tip, impossiblegirl

where did you end up getting yours?

ImpossibleGirl86 · 15/07/2019 11:17

A little independant shop which has closed now. I think I visited 3 little shops and just tried on whatever sample dresses they had in my size. I found one I loved in the 3rd shop and... Sounds stupid I know, but it fit like a glove and the only alteration it needed was a tiny amount off the length. Clearly it was meant to be Grin
Fingers crossed for you!

partyinapark · 15/07/2019 11:30

Sounds like it was meant to be!

I am actually quite excited about finding a better dress now. I've sent off a few appointment requests for local boutiques and I will head to wed2be tomorrow if I can find the time.

I have emailed the wedding dress shop expressing my disappointment and requesting full refund (fingers crossed)

Stop panicking. My engagement was 16 weeks so it's totally doable.

Their fuck up means they should refund the deposit. I'd also ask for an extra £80 as that's roughly the cost of a rush order on a dress. Then get making appointments for dress shopping, making it clear the time frame involved.

thinkfast · 15/07/2019 11:40

If you're in north London you could try Shadiye (shop near Arsenal). She makes bespoke wedding dresses (she made mine) and is lovely.

partyinapark · 15/07/2019 11:44

I know it'll all be okay. I am a firm believer that everything happens for a reason and I am totally calm after my initial shock / disappointment / mild panic.

Thanks for the recommendation, thinkfast - will check it out

paap1975 · 15/07/2019 11:48

At least you found out beforehand. The hem of my dress feel down halfway up the aisle as they hadn't finished the alterations (just tacked the hem). You've got plenty of time, don't worry!

Singlebutmarried · 15/07/2019 11:51

We have a curvey wedding dress shop in our town (about 50 mins in the train from London). Happy to message you the details if you want OP
