Hi all,

I’ve heard people going away every school halfterm! (Weekends and longer) is this the norm?

How often do you go away during the year? Including weekends?

4 times.
One weeks family summer holiday with DH
5 days or so with my friends and their kids--also in the summer
A week with DHs family in Spain at November half term
Couple of weekends somewhere cheap just me and the kids.

Each of trips is generally cheap.
I like Haven, Butlins, Youth Hostels, Camping.
I love Horton Women's Holiday Centre. We're also very lucky that DHs family are willing to host us for free.

I wouldn't say its usual to have so many holidays. I didn't have any as a kid. (My children are shocked! ). Most people I know have 1 week, once a year.

RhinestoneCowgirl · 11/07/2019 22:12

I took the DC down to Cornwall for a couple of days during half term, and we have another UK holiday booked for summer holidays. That's it, apart from staying with family for the odd weekend. (again UK)

Pipandmum · 11/07/2019 22:19

When my parents and husband were alive we’d go to Spain (where they lived) at Easter and try and do another overseas or domestic trip for a week. Then my hubby and I would do a weekend on our own for our anniversary.
Now just me and my teens. Last year we just did one trip in UK for a week and and a few weekends in London. The year before though we did a five day cruise, a trip to Spain and a few weekends in London. This year two weekends in London and Xmas two weeks in US. But my son is 15 he spent a week with his girlfriend in Spain.
So, in general, two weeks abroad and a few weekends in UK (London where we have a flat) on average.

WalkAwaySugarbear · 11/07/2019 22:25

Usually once a year. It depends on whether DHs holidays (assigned shifts) coincides with school holidays. Sometimes we are lucky at Easter, maybe July or August never in Feb or Oct so its pot luck.

Turquoisetamborine · 11/07/2019 22:28

We go away most school holidays. I find that I don’t really relax if we aren’t away and just get embroiled in housework/cooking. My parents tend to pay for holidays for us instead of presents for Christmas and birthdays as I’m not a stuff kind of person. I’d rather have experiences.

This year we’ve already been to Edinburgh at May half term, we went to North Yorkshire at Christmas. We are going to Pickering in a couple of weeks for a week in a cabin with a hot tub, then to London for August bank holiday.

Then we are in Florida for two weeks over October half term.

Swishswish26 · 11/07/2019 22:33

Two or three times a year normally.
This year we went to Portugal for a week at Easter (visiting family so no cost for accommodation), a week in the Canary Islands for May half term and we have a week in an apartment in Southern Spain booked for August (belongs to family so again no cost for accommodation).
We have dd6 and ds10 and they love travelling and holidays abroad.

InDubiousBattle · 11/07/2019 22:34

One, week long UK holiday per year. We visit dp's family (not very far away really but we stay for the weekend) 4 or 5 times a year. This year we also had a weekend away with friends. We do really enjoy our holiday but we can't afford to do loads and we prefer to have days out/eat out throughout the year than spend more on holidays

Bookworm4 · 11/07/2019 22:37

2 x one week abroad, a few UK weekends and a Euro city break. Always look for good deals, had some great bargain holidays.

Campervan69 · 11/07/2019 22:37

We have a campervan so we are always away. Every weekend as well at the moment. Off to beautiful Wensleydale tomorrow can't wait.

We do try to go away as much as possible during the holidays. As somebody has said it gets you away from the house and all the boring things that you would be doing and forces you to take a proper break. Plus forces us to spend time together because we can all end up in separate rooms doing our separate thing when we're at home

elQuintoConyo · 11/07/2019 22:40

A week camping (beginning of August), a week at a friend's house in France (end of August).

Long weekend in December for DS' birthday (were not in UK, his birthday always lands between two national holidays, so around 4-5 days. We stay in Spain, just drive 2-3 hours away, change of scenery.

This year we did France at Easter, nothing last December. This year we'll be in the UK for Christmas, do will skip the birthday weekend.

Always cheap and cheerful, lots of lovely memories of DS and the dog Smile

londonloves · 11/07/2019 22:41

This year - 5 days at Center Parcs with the I. Laws, 10 day camp with the other in laws. A few weekend visits to grandparents.
Personally I think travelling with very small people (babies/toddlers) is hugely over rated. Plus we have little money and are trying to avoid flying. Don't plan to go abroad for a few years.
Next year maybe two-three UK trips.

Ikeameatballs · 11/07/2019 22:44

This year:

One week abroad in May half-term
Few nights away in Peak District at start of Summer hols
Trip to London at end of Summer hols
Overnight stay for a wedding in October.

I’ve had a weekend away with DP and DD has been to Paris on a school trip.

I’d love to do more, especially abroad, but it is expensive.

Dandelionplease · 11/07/2019 22:49

Aw, thanks for all your replies. Smile looks like a lot do go quite a lot.

Camping at May half term just 3 nights then a week in U.K. summer hols and another week U.K. at end of summer with in laws too. Weekends to stay at friends during the year maybe the odd London trip in cheap travel lodge.
Have driven to France some years for 10 days hoping to do 2 weeks abroad next year. Sadly don’t have enough holidays from work or funds to do something every school break.

sproutsandparsnips · 11/07/2019 22:50

A week abroad in summer. A few days in uk at Easter. Maybe overnight somewhere.

bellsbuss · 11/07/2019 22:53

We go away Easter to Cornwall or Devon, May half term we hire a house with family. June/ July we do a long haul holiday or sometime Spain. Summer holidays normally a short uk break, plus a weekend at a Harbour hotel. September a long weekend away with friends at Center parcs, Bluestone or forest holidays. October half term in laws take us to the canaries for a week oh and Feb half term we go to Finlake.

ConstanzaAndSalieri · 11/07/2019 22:55

So far this is very much the monied mumsnet response.

Lots of people count theirselves lucky if they have a week in a caravan in the uk and/or stay with friends.

GreekOddess · 11/07/2019 22:55

Once or twice a year for a holiday plus maybe one weekend.

We are off for a short weekend tomorrow night (staying at a family members house holiday home), we have a week in the UK at the beginning of the school hols and 10 days in Europe at the end.

We would love more breaks but I receive a paltry annual leave entitlement.

Bookworm4 · 11/07/2019 22:59

@ConstanzaAndSalieri
I’m not monied just look for good deals, don’t smoke or drink and choose holidays instead.

LittlefairyMum · 11/07/2019 22:59

At least 4/5 holidays abroad per year.

I live in a small house: Could afford a big one but value experiences instead.

Chocolateandcarbs · 11/07/2019 23:02

We tend to get away 3 times, usually twice in UK and once abroad, this year we’ve been abroad twice luckily. Plus the odd night in a hotel (maybe once or twice a year in a good year) if we can get some willing babysitters!

freshasthebrightbluesky · 11/07/2019 23:04

The last time I took our dc on holiday (not counting the very occasional overnighter with my mum in her caravan in Cleethorpes) was in the summer holidays in 2017. We had 4 nights/5 days in a caravan in Withernsea. Before that was Oct 2016 in Cornwall.

We haven't got any plans to go away at all this year and it's not looking likely for next year either. We just don't have the money. I don't think the kids mind though.
