What is a good 'big' present for a 10 year old?

DD is 10 soon and hasn't asked for much in the way of presents. We would like to get her something big that she will get a lot of use out of. A trampoline would be ideal but we have 2yo DS who would also be desperate to use it and it isnt safe until he is 4. Something that would encourage her to be outdoor and active would be ideal but any ideas welcome! She has a bike and scooter. We have a decent sized garden to accommodate larger toys.

A weekend away for the two of you with activities age appropriate for her, that you couldn't do with a 2YO.
Something to be totally hers: like go ape or climbing or a maze or something. Even camping if that's your kind of thing.

I was a big sister and would have loved some special parent time for myself where things weren't moderated down for the younger sibling(s).

Not to mention the awful nuisance that trampolines can be to next door neighbours if gardens are small or trampolines are sited close to fences.

Is look on eBay for a shes to paint into a den for her to invite her friends round etc

A decent bike, it's the one thing me and my 10 year old enjoy doing together. We're just back from a holiday abroad where we hired bikes and saw amazing parts of the island we'd never had seen without them. It was tough going in the heat but as we cycle lots at home he handled it pretty well.

memememe · 11/07/2019 19:52

regarding the trampoline issue, if you bought your 10yo a bike or a laptop would you allow the 2yo to use those as well? most presents you'll have to stop the little one from using. its parenting. im a childminder and have a trampoline in my garden. the little ones understand its not for them and don't ask to use it. the same as they dont touch hot things/phones/tv controllers etc. you cant expect the present to be suitable for them both; its dds birthday. poor thing. what happens when she wants a phone..?

Skateboard
Basketball hoop
Binoculars
Swiss Army Knife
Fire pit and marshmallows

Winsomelosesome · 11/07/2019 19:58

Sorry just seen she has a bike, is it a decent one? Maybe an upgrade? Other outdoorsy things- tennis racquet and lessons or roller boots. I loved my roller boots at that age and there's rinks popping up all over the place near me.

thatwouldbeanecumenicalmatter · 11/07/2019 19:59

Its not advisable to have them using one at all before the age of 6

Really? My youngest DS got his grade 3 in trampolining before he was 6 years old.

ChangesAt30 · 11/07/2019 20:02

Why so many people pushing the trampoline idea? Hmm

@Littleblurry a friends of my nephews (12 years old at the time) was on their trampoline, being sensible, but landed awkwardly. The noise as he snapped his ankle - yuk!

That night my DH said we'd never have a trampoline for the kids and he's stuck by it. They're not scarred or anything Grin

MyGastIsFlabbered · 11/07/2019 20:05

Because OP said a trampoline would be ideal but for her 2 year old.

bondirescuefan · 11/07/2019 20:06

i agree with @notatwork ! i would have killed for some time with my parents alone, without my siblings, when i was younger! even if it's just a day out! DD will love it!

bondirescuefan · 11/07/2019 20:07

why is everyone pushing the trampoline idea?! OP has made it very clear it is not compatible with their current situation!!!

BlueSkiesLies · 11/07/2019 20:09

Trampoline.

Why should she miss out because you have a toddler? You need to supervise a 2 yo all the time anyway so it’s no great danger.

Pixel99 · 11/07/2019 20:17

Not an outdoor gift, but a charm bracelet and then buy her a charm every Christmas or birthday until she is 18 and it is complete.

InspirationWontCome · 11/07/2019 20:18

Does she have a dressing table in her room?

bookmum08 · 11/07/2019 20:20

If she hasn't really asked for something big I would save the money. No point spending out for something she might be a bit 'meh' about.
What has she asked for? To you it may not seem much but to her it could be special. For example my daughter likes Manga and Graphic novels - ones that you don't usually find in your average Whsmith so £25 worth of these 'special' books to her is awesome!
Listen to your daughter about she would actually like.

Rockbird · 11/07/2019 20:20

My then 4yo broke her leg on a trampoline a couple of summers ago. Never ever again would I have a trampoline.

Harry Potter world? Just you and she for a nice day out. DD1 would have killed for that.

growlingbear · 11/07/2019 20:21

Outdoor table tennis would be great. Or a gorgeous tennis racquet and a set of lessons if she's into that sort of thing.

You can get trampolines that 'sink' into the lawn. I think they have less accidents as you can't fall off them.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 11/07/2019 20:22

It's a shame that she will miss out on the Trampoline that you say she would love because her little brother may whinge about it.

missyB1 · 11/07/2019 20:25

I broke my arm riding my bike when I was 7, my kids still all had bikes when much younger than that.....
Anyway my ds will be 11 in a few months he’s getting a new bike.

Snog · 11/07/2019 20:28

Take her paddle boarding?

themartinipolice · 11/07/2019 20:45

Guitar or keyboard? Good age to start learning an instrument!

ChangesAt30 · 11/07/2019 20:49

But if she's gave a reason why she won't be getting it (because of her toddler) then why is it still getting pushed? 🤷‍♀️ she's asked for other ideas.

IWantMyHatBack · 11/07/2019 21:00

Why does everybody keep insisting on trampolines? Fgs.
