Where are all the Brits?! None here where I am

I am in Tenerife and there's absolutely no other British people here.

Just me and DS. It's quite nice in a way because it's quiet and there's not really that many people here at all! Yet it's supposedly a very popular hotel. Yet everyone is either Spanish, Scandinavian or German.

I've not heard a single other British accent.

I thought Tenerife would be really noisy at this time of year too but even the beach was quiet. I jumped out of my skin when I heard someone speak with an English accent on the beach cafe Grin

I'm quite missing all the English noise.

There are the cutest little lizards here though. I'm tempted to touch one. I can get up quite close and they don't seem to care or move away, hotel gentleman says they're harmless....

Sounds perfect to me. They are probably all in Salou, didn't hear hardly a single Spanish accent in May at our hotel.

AliciaMayEmory · 11/07/2019 14:02

Most schools haven't broken up yet, round here only private schools have finished for the summer. The schools in our county finish tomorrow, but they are always a week earlier than the neighboring counties. May be at the weekend there will be more English noise!

Singlenotsingle · 11/07/2019 14:14

Give it couple of weeks when all the kids are on their summer holidays!

lockedonsie · 11/07/2019 14:20

I get that most schools in the UK haven't broken up yet but everywhere else I've been where it's a week or so before they break up is always packed anyway Confused

Loads and loads of people I know personally are away at this time too. Yet not a single British child or parent is here... Or even just a couple on their own.

*That 'Confused' face reads as quite rude, apologies if it seems that way! Just showing my confusion Grin

I'm just back from a campsite in France. The owner was telling me that their UK bookings are down dramatically this year. She is assuming it is due to brexit uncertainty.

Ullupullu · 11/07/2019 14:21

I expect people didn't book holidays abroad in Europe when booking earlier this year/last year while Brexit was looming. Then the deadline changed.

crustycrab · 11/07/2019 14:26

Who did you book through? You might've inadvertently booked a hotel sold predominantly to Germans if you did it independently.

I'm assuming you and DS weren't the only ones on the flight? Everyone must've gone somewhere!

babysharkah · 11/07/2019 14:30

You're in the best bit then 😂

missyB1 · 11/07/2019 14:35

I’m currently in Menorca and there are hardly any Brits in the resort we are in. But we find that normal as we always go abroad this week knowing that most British schools haven’t broken up so it’s a bit quieter.

Herocomplex · 11/07/2019 14:37

Lots of school hols in rest of Europe, August will be a different story!

Anoni · 11/07/2019 14:56

Not many schools have broken up and i think brexit uncertainty plays a part.
Many of the people i know haven't booked europe this year, I'm holidaying in the uk instead as i didn't want to risk it when i booked last year

Howmanysleepstilchristmas · 12/07/2019 08:02

Whereabouts in Tenerife are you? Would you recommend it? I’m considering for August...

Ilikewinter · 12/07/2019 08:07

Where abouts are you, we went in June and it was definately 'Brits abroad'!

Cloudtree · 12/07/2019 08:07

I know loads of people who deliberately didn't book overseas holidays this year due to brexit uncertainty. Us included. We would generally be on holiday this week/next (kids broke up yesterday) but not this year.

Todayissunny · 12/07/2019 08:17

I am in croatia. Surrounded by Croatians, slovenians, Austrians a few Germans and the odd swiss and danish.
The atmosphere is really lovely.
I don't live in the uk and usually enjoy meeting a few brits when I'm on holiday though. It's still a bit early though isn't it?

lockedonsie · 12/07/2019 10:09

How I'm in something de la Cruz. Hotel is Puerto Palace. It's very quiet and lovely value for money.

I would definitely recommend if a relaxing holiday is what you're after!

cloudyinjune · 12/07/2019 10:14

It sounds like you are upset that there are no Brits there, you are in Spain after all, why not book a holiday somewhere else if you need Brits?

crustycrab · 12/07/2019 10:23

That explains it then. Puerto Palace doesn't appear to be a hotel sold by any of the British package holiday providers. It'll be a different story in lots of the other hotels

timeforakinderworld · 12/07/2019 10:27

I'm at a resort in Italy and so far I would say the mix is 95% Italians, 4% Russians, 1% other!

lockedonsie · 12/07/2019 10:37

cloudy I'm not upset! Just a bit shocked Grin and a little lonely since it's just me and DC

We booked through a very popular package holiday provider

Literally almost everyone I know seems to be going to Croatia this year but not until August.

crustycrab · 12/07/2019 10:43

Did you? Only listings for it that came up for me were Expedia, booking.com, onthebeach

OKBobble · 12/07/2019 10:45

I always think of the canaries as being somewhere to go for winter sun though eg. Feb to Easter. If you want Spanish later in the year I would go to Spain/Balearics

Untamedtoad · 12/07/2019 10:48

You're in Puerto de la Cruz in the north of the island. The large majority of Brits will be in the south... Las Americas, Los Cristiano's, Golf del Sur, Costa de Adeje etc. North is largely inhabited by locals, far less touristy and unpopular with Brits (expect for day trips and excursions to the north, Loro Parque, the caves, walking/hiking etc) the south is warmer, drier, and a lot busier with alot more to do. Have you noticed the abundance of lush greenery? Go to the south and it's like a dry desert in comparison, as the north gets the majority of the rain! We usually go twice a year to Golf del Sur, and it's always busy, no matter what time of year we go.
