bra intervention for dd

steppemum · 10/07/2019 19:35

need your help ladies.

dd needs bras, only wants veyr plain sports bras, the more androgenous the better.
She didn't want to be measured and won't go to a shop, up until now she has worn thicker crop tops, but they aren't really doing the trick.

She measured herself, and I went and bought a selection (she told me 36"
They are all way to big.
I persuaded her to let me measure, and she is 29" underneath and 35" on top.

I cannot imagine she is only a 30 band as dd2 is skinnier and a 30/32. She does not want a tight band.
I can buy a whole set of sizes, but I am struggling.

if I got a 32, what cup size would that be?

any help much appreciated

Quick Google says 34A/34B. A ends at 35" and B starts at 35" so see which fits best?

But really, she needs to get measured and try them on in a shop.

EleanorOalike · 10/07/2019 19:45

I’d agree you need to get her measured and have her try on a few styles. My friend was MUCH broader than me, certainly bigger dress size and weight wise and for years we thought we were both 34 DD. I was right about myself but when she got measured properly she was a 29GG. It’s quite possible your dd is a 29 but you won’t know for definite until you get her measured.

steppemum · 10/07/2019 19:47

Thanks for your quick reply, but sorry, I don't think you are using the 'bra intervention' method!

adding on 4 inches is no longer considered correct, so measuring 30" means a band of 30".

That much I know. I don't know how the cups work.
There is a group on mn who do this, hence the 'bra intervention' title!

No chance of getting her near a shop for bras.Even if we could, we aren't close enough to any of the places that do it properly.

I'll just buy loads and then take them back.

sorry first reply was to TheInvestigator.

She could only be a 30, I'll certainly bring some 30 home to try.
To be honest, the person i the shop is just a person with a tape measure. I have a tape measure, she has now been measured.

Getting that done in a shop is not going to happen!

YesQueen · 10/07/2019 19:51

So that's a 6 inch difference
Try a 30E

SandunesAndRainclouds · 10/07/2019 19:53

I’m pretty sure the rule is 1 inch = 1 cup size. So with her original measurements there’s 6 inches between the two so that would be a cup size of E. I would try a 30DD/E to start with.

As an aside idea, what about a sports bra? They are soft and supportive.

steppemum · 10/07/2019 20:04

thank you will try 30E and sizes round it.
sandunes - I am only looking at sports bras.

One BIG problem is that if her correct size is 30E, then when she puts it on, she is suddenly going to have a very distinct bust. one reason she has stuck to crop tops for so long is to hide that distinct bust. She would be happiest in a binder.

I am tempted to get her the 'wrong' size, so she has support but not a clear bust line, but I haven't a clue what to get!

She wants th opposite of what bra manufacturers try to provide.

I should add that she has finally agreed to gettign bras as she is uncomfortable running etc, so we need to get something

You could stick to sports bras perhaps

MmeBufo · 10/07/2019 20:20

A 30 DD/E sounds about right, 32 D/DD if she insists on a looser band.

Triumph do a minimizer sports bra, triatction or somesuch. I think other brands do too

MmeBufo · 10/07/2019 20:23

IMO Shock Absorber do the best sports bras for actual sport. Mine are lasting so well that I've not looked at their range in yonks. Worth a look

BogglesGoggles · 10/07/2019 20:26

Get her Freya sports bras. Just isn’t overly defined in those (I’m a similar size)

FreeButtonBee · 10/07/2019 20:29

Shock absorber sports bras are excellent. They do tend to come up tight so I’d try a 32 back in a DD/E, maybe a 30 in E/EE/F. Possibly even a 34D. They are pretty full fitting - high neck solid straps etc. Not near or ignorable. But they won’t give her a shelf of boobs. Will find my fav style and post

DD is a 30F/G depending on make. She eventually had a proper measure in a proper bra place when she got a key drama part and the director said "ahem"

pejorativelyspeaking · 10/07/2019 20:35

I vote for the Engel sports bra, I'm big busted and they are comfy soft and minimising www.google.co.uk/search?q=ennel+sports+bra&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&hl=en-gb&client=safari

KatharinaRosalie · 10/07/2019 20:36

30E is not so massive really. Try Fantasie Rebecca - I know it's not a sports bra, but I find it has quite a minimizing effect. The nude one is invisible even under sheer tops.

Also for crop top styles, Molke bras are very supportive and last time I was wearing one, a friend asked where my boobs went (I'm 30FF). Maybe something like that would work? Will not give her a boob-shelf like most other similar styles. www.molke.co.uk/shop?category=1&order=date

Lonecatwithkitten · 10/07/2019 20:38

I am a 30F I have. Neat busy, by no means looks big in any way just defined. Cramming her breasts into the wrong size will make them look bigger I definitely found this when I wore a 34DD which is the equivalent.

ThatLibraryMiss · 10/07/2019 20:41

Sports bras in 30E from Brastop.

There are a couple of Freya ones in the sale: crop top and soft cup sports bra. Once she finds a brand and style that suits her you may be able to find them cheaper on eBay.

Can you send her to her room with a tape measure and the bra fitting Reddit's beginners' guide? It does include a link to tips to minimise a bust, including binding.

Springfern · 10/07/2019 20:47

She has the exact same measurements as me. I wear 32 DD, I dont like looking booby so I wear the minimisers from debanhams

Papergirl1968 · 10/07/2019 21:20

Some shops do bras in small, medium and large - wondering if that would be better? Think cropped top style but with more support.
Don’t know how to link but if you look online at George at Asda, under lingerie and then bras, there is a comfort section. Other stores have similar.

steppemum · 11/07/2019 08:01

That is so helpful, thank you everyone, especially for all the links.
Right off to buy a ton today and see if I can find her something.

S0CKS · 11/07/2019 08:08

Wonder if you could take her with you to be fitted? If she sees how easy it is for you she might feel comfortable with the lady enough for her to have it done?

lastqueenofscotland · 11/07/2019 08:14

Moving comfort do lovely sports bras they come in more fun colours but still plain. Cheaper and more comfortable than shock absorber (I run about 50 miles a week, they get well tested).

steppemum · 11/07/2019 11:59

right, ordered 2 on-line, and just been to M&S, picked up 12 in 6 different styles, with varying sizes.

Cost an arm and a leg, so tomorrow all the un-needed ones will be going back!
