Toddler disaster 😱

Hi, so my almost two year old boy has decided it was a clever idea to put a very small dog biscuit into his ear i have had a look, i am unable to see it. Do you think this will come out itself? How long should i allow it to be in there before being concerned?
Thanks

I'd ring 101 and see what they advise. I don't think it would come out so probably needs to be removed. It's likely to cause a nasty earache sooner rather than later.

Seeline · 10/07/2019 10:57

If you can't see it, there are 3 options:
1 - It didn't actually go in in the first place
2 - It went in, but has already fallen out
3 - It's gone a good way in and is likely to be stuck.

Have you got a minor injuries unit in your area? either go there, or if not A&E to get it removed properly. You could ring 111 to see where they advise as the best place to go.

if he’s pushed it right in then it’s a trip to the gp or minor injuries for removal. If you can’t see it you risk pushing it further down the ear canal. If it’s well in I’m not sure it will come out. Or it might do But not before he’s ended up with an infection. Good luck .

I’d go to A&E just to get him checked

Summertimeatthebeach · 10/07/2019 11:05

Poor dc. Is he OK or feeling a bit ruff?

starfishcoffee · 10/07/2019 11:05

Good luck! Make sure they look thoroughly. When I was young, a cotton ear bud came off in my ear and was stuck. Went to GP but the doctor was adamant that I'd got it wrong and he couldn't see anything. 2 weeks later it came out in the shower. Yuck. Blush

That said, I'm sure a dog biscuit is more obvious!

agirlcalledBede · 10/07/2019 11:06

My DD did that once at that age. A&E departments are used to handling it. Don't panic.

QueeniesPotOfRouge · 10/07/2019 11:07

Stop that at once! Grin

When I was in primary school, another child put a piece of pencil lead in my ear - I didn't tell anyone, and it was eventually extracted when I was 19 after I went to the GP about black earwax which I thought might be blood! Obviously do take him to the doctor but try not to fret too much.

Julie94 · 10/07/2019 11:10

He seems fine within himself he is due a nap so hes tired, but no he seems fine. 😀

My ds did this when he was 3 with a small bit of white plastic. We couldn’t see it so took him to the GP who also couldn’t see it. We were referred to ENT the following day. They could see it but couldn’t get it out due to my ds not sitting still enough for them to get it out without damaging his ear so he had to be put under the following day. I remember a nurse asking him why he’d done it he told her he was doing a trick and it was meant to pop out the other ear Hmm

They were concerned about it either becoming infected or permanently damaging his hearing. Although the consultant did tell me some people have things in their ears and never even know it or have any issues.
I think getting him checked out would be for the best.

Soola · 10/07/2019 11:12

How long is your dogs tongue? Grin

Soola · 10/07/2019 11:12

My old lab would have had it out in seconds!

Julie94 · 10/07/2019 11:15

My DD (who is 8 and should definitely have known better!) put a plastic bead in her ear a couple of months ago. I could see it in there, but couldn't remove it with tweezers.

I took her to a walk-in centre but they don't remove things from ears and advised us to go to A&E. They couldn't get it out, but a couple of weeks later an ENT doctor removed it with ease.

I'd start with GP or walk-in centre for someone to use a little torch to determine whether there's anything in there.

Honeybingbong · 10/07/2019 11:20

No he was first in first out. It was really quick. Once they’d were happy he’d recovered and eaten he was back home and bouncing round the house like it had never happened. He went back to nursery the following day.

Summertimeatthebeach · 10/07/2019 11:21

Maybe have a try with tweezers while he is asleep?.
Ds sniffed a tic tac up his nose while camping! Hysterical until I told him to just sneeze and it flew out. Had to step in when he asked could he eat it!
He also swallowed a magnetic ball.
Dd swallowed a tack and had to poo check for days! Never found it but metal detector NHS used said it had passed!
Grim!

Drinkandknowthings · 10/07/2019 11:21

My 5 year old did this! She shoved a bit of paper in so she could pretend it was wax and she could get it out! (She’s had a lot of excess wax issues and has to have it removed professionally every now and again)

DH couldn’t see anything and thought she was just messing but I checked her ear and it was really shoved in there.

After 5 hours at A&E they popped it out easily.

Honeybingbong · 10/07/2019 11:21

* first in first out on the third day. They let him home between days/appointments

IncrediblySadToo · 10/07/2019 11:22

Obviously your dog isn’t a lab!

I’d take him to the GP now then hopefully he’ll nap afterwards if he naps now he might get it out & eat it or he might push it in further

Hodpiraks aren’t too bad as a parent if a child in there, not for s day or two anyway, so please don’t let that out you off going to get it looked st. It’s highly unlikely they’ll keep him
In anyway!

IncrediblySadToo · 10/07/2019 11:24

I don’t know what Hodpiraks are I’ll ssk my phone later, but Hospitals....

Summertimeatthebeach · 10/07/2019 11:56

If you are still in doubt you can borrow this snout....
