Have you ever stood on a weaver fish.. am I a wimp?

I was talking to my friend earlier who was telling me about her trip to Devon with her DCs over the summer. I said to her she should make sure they all got beach shoes as I stood on a weaver fish down there last year (not far from where she's going). She laughed and told me that I was a wimp and her children wouldn't wear the shoes anyway.

The pain was excruciating and shooting up my legs. I was struggling to walk and felt really light headed. The relief of getting my food in a bucket of hot water was amazing. Now I'm wondering if I'm just pathetic and/or have a low pain threshold.

So if you've stood on a weaver fish what is your memory of the pain?

I haven't stood on one but they're notorious for causing severe pain. So you're not a wimp, though everyone experiences pain differently and feeling it more than someone else doesn't mean that you're a wuss.

I live near a Weaver-fish risk beach; I understand them to be pretty horrendous stings. Doubt you're a wimp, OP. It sounds like a simple jellyfish sting to the ignorant, maybe.

I had a single insect bite incapacitate me for about 5 minutes once, could barely breathe. Then recovered fine by 15 minutes later. Don't even know what insect it was!

StealthPolarBear · 06/07/2019 19:11

There was a thread on here about them (god the crap I remember) and the consensus was they are hugely painful.
She probably hasn't heard of them and doesn't understand. I hadn't until that thread.

Topseyt · 06/07/2019 19:12

I did when I was about 10 and on a family holiday in Wales with my parents. I remember it very well and I am in my 50s now.

It was excruciatingly painful and my parents took me to A & E because they were worried and we didn't know what it was at the time.

Your friend is being an idiot. If she or one of her children did step on one while barefoot on the beach it would wipe the smugness away, that's for sure. I would also think that it would pretty quickly cure them of their aversion to beach shoes, which are sold for a reason.

listsandbudgets · 06/07/2019 19:14

Stealh I'm not entirely sure I didnt start a thread at the time... I was miserable :)

May well have been. Iirc no one said you were a wimp

Fuckwheresitgone · 06/07/2019 19:18

It really, really hurts! I'd say it's not dissimilar to a jellyfish sting. My children are happy to wear beach shoes having seen the pain I was in when I stepped on one, to be fair I don't suppose the weaver fish was too happy about being stepped on either!

listsandbudgets · 06/07/2019 19:18

Do you know... until you said it, I'd forgotten I'd put it up. Its been a busy year. Clearly just need a lot of reassurance when it comes to those evil little fish

I have. Couldn’t walk up the beach was in so much pain. Exactly as you describe.

camperjam · 06/07/2019 19:21

I had one on the ball of my foot, it felt like a red hot needle. It was awful!

pointythings · 06/07/2019 19:22

The reason why my DDs and I haven't been stung by weaver fish is that we are wimps sensible and always wear water shoes. Putting yourself through avoidable pain isn't brave, it's stupid.

Soubriquet · 06/07/2019 19:22

I haven’t heard if anyone IRL standing on one but I’ve heard they are stupidly painful

Yanbu OP

BendydickCuminsnatch · 06/07/2019 19:23

Wow I’ve never heard of these!! Eek! Spent a lot of time in Devon as a kid, how did I miss this? Sounds awful!

peoplepleaser1 · 06/07/2019 19:23

Life guard once said to me that stepping on a weaver fish won't kill you- but it hurts so much that you may wish that it had. So on that basis I'd say you are absolutely not a wimp.

On the Devon beaches that we visit almost everyone wears beach shoes- it's really slack of your friend not to take simple precautions to protect her kids' feet IMO.

thefishcake · 06/07/2019 19:24

Stood on one before, and it was excuritiating. Ended up in A&E, even though I followed the standard treatment (which is to immerse the affected area in the hostess water that you can stand, and keep repeating for as long as possible. Pain will end at some point!)

JohnWolfenstein · 06/07/2019 19:24

I've seen people blue lighted to hospital for weaver fish stings on more than one occasion. So it's definitely not something to dismiss.

thefishcake · 06/07/2019 19:25

Hottest not hotess water! (I used coffee - easy way to get a quick tan!)

EggysMom · 06/07/2019 19:30

I holidayed in Devon many times as a kid, I don't remember these? Thinking of Devon for next year, now going off the idea ...

Redpriestandmozart · 06/07/2019 19:32

Our DD did while surfing a few years ago. The pain was horrendous, she limped for over 2 weeks and could hardly touch her foot. She never surfed again without rubber shoes.

pointythings · 06/07/2019 20:05

Eggysmom Devon is gorgeous and wonderful. But you need to wear water shoes. They are also great on shingle beaches.

EggysMom · 07/07/2019 16:21

But you need to wear water shoes

It's difficult enough persuading ASD/SLD son to wear school shoes and trainers. He's very shoe phobic. I've tried him with water shoes before with no success. Maybe we just won't do the beaches!
