My hoover has died. What should I replace it with?

My dyson has been dying a death for a while, I've had to replace the filter half way through the job just to get a basic clean done. It's now really dead- not sucking, overheating, smelling bad.

I need to replace it, but what with? I was very happy with my dyson but believe they've gone downhill now.

Large 4 bed house, two flights of stairs, 2 cats, outdoorsy people. Will be kept in the cellar.

We do also have a robot vac, but that only really works downstairs.

Shark? Which one? Vax? Gtech? Help!

I like my meile cat dog, but feel guilty about the bags.
The filtration is amazing for the asthmatics in the house and it actually cleans coarse cat hairs of my chairs and cushions.

Shark

Carpet sweeper. Longer lasting (my grans lasted 50 years and my parents still have it), and no electricity needed, so you can clean during a power cut.
Much better for the environment. Wink

I've tried loads over the years but found Henry to be the most reliable. It is a pain to move around but the suction on it is still amazing after 2 years. When we first got it the suction lifted the carpet it was so strong!

Miele cat and dog cylinder

Bumblenut · 06/07/2019 10:14

Been very happy with my Miele cat and dog which I’ve had for five years now. It will test how good your carpet fitter was. I find it much better than the Henry.

nakedscientist · 06/07/2019 10:22

A Henry all the way. I have a bigish house and have been through two dysons and other expensive hoovers. My last one, a £400 Bosch died when the builder hoovered up some rubble with it!

So I bought a Henry, cheap simple and you can even Hoover up bloody rocks with it..

acatcalledjohn · 06/07/2019 10:24

Miele C3 cat & dog. It's amazing!

llangennith · 06/07/2019 10:33

@Hmmmbop Try phoning Dyson themselves. Given how expensive good vacuum cleaners are it's probably worth getting your Dyson fixed. When I had problems with my Dyson they sent an engineer to my home to fix it and I think it was £59.

I have a Shark Liftaway with Duo clean and I do love it. Buttons everywhere to easily break it down into smaller bits, from long handle upright to just long handle, shorter and only handle all with or without the base roller section, you can opt to carry the collection section or have it attached. It's just brilliant for easy clicking together and taking apart and is great for gathering bits of mess on the floor such as grains without pushing them along instead.

CrotchetyQuaver · 06/07/2019 12:20

@Hmmmbop the Sebo on stairs. Comes with a hose extension you connect and it's easy peasy. Plenty long enough for a flight of stairs, unlike the Dyson which was stretched to the max, also has a longer power cable so less having to keep changing plugs

Houseman6 · 06/07/2019 16:52

No Overthinking
Miele

I have two Dysons (one is cordless) and I hate them both. I borrowed my mum’s Miele and found it much much better. But have to wait for my Dyson to pack up.

skippy67 · 06/07/2019 16:57

We've got a Shark. It's a stick one though not a lift away. Had a Henry for years and was beyond happy when it died. Hated it.

Hmmmbop · 06/07/2019 21:25

@CrotchetyQuaver our stairs are quite long, the Dyson hose reaches about a quarter of the way up! Maybe halfway if stretched to its absolute limit.

Not a Sebo = they weigh a ton and never die!

123confused · 06/07/2019 21:30

What ever you go for make sure it's cordless!

charliesweb · 06/07/2019 21:41

DH got me a Shark lift away for my birthday and he's only not my exdh because I love it and because he took the kids shopping to get me gin and chocolate. I got returned the favour on Father's Day when one of the kids got him the Shark car cleaning accessory kit Grin

Pollaidh · 06/07/2019 21:48

Miele

wowfudge · 06/07/2019 21:52

Love my Sebo X4 Pet - had a boost button for extra deep cleaning and the long hose is great for the stairs. It's not heavy - there's even a slot for carrying it by that makes it easy. I don't recognise what the pp has said about the bags smelling at all.

Houseman6 · 06/07/2019 22:06

Miele

Hmmmbop · 06/07/2019 23:29

123confused I'm just worried a cordless won't get the whole house done in one charge. It can take 30-40 minutes to do a full hoover.

OP posts:
hugoagogo · 07/07/2019 12:02

With cordless, you have to consider where you will charge it as well.
That along with doubting they would have the power to clean teenagers rooms that haven't been tackled for a shameful amount of time.

pigglypug · 07/07/2019 12:09

We have a Miele cat & dog and a cordless Dyson, and I really rate them both, but I think they serve different purposes. The Dyson is great for quickly hoovering up the kitchen or any crumbs, while the Miele is good for a deep clean. The Miele is a bit heavy and a bit fiddly on stairs so I tend to use the Dyson or leave it to the cleaner.

Moondancer73 · 07/07/2019 14:07

@listsandbudgets to be fair I've not used one but I have heard my colleagues say they find the attachments a bit flimsy.
