My hoover has died. What should I replace it with?

My dyson has been dying a death for a while, I've had to replace the filter half way through the job just to get a basic clean done. It's now really dead- not sucking, overheating, smelling bad.

I need to replace it, but what with? I was very happy with my dyson but believe they've gone downhill now.

Large 4 bed house, two flights of stairs, 2 cats, outdoorsy people. Will be kept in the cellar.

We do also have a robot vac, but that only really works downstairs.

Shark? Which one? Vax? Gtech? Help!

A Henry.

How are sebo on stairs? They look cumbersome.

Replaced our broken hoover with a second hand dyson on eBay. Person who used it for around a year, said it was too heavy. They paid £500 for it, we bought it for £75.

It is amazing. Never ever would have thought that a hoover should ever be worth £500 but it is amazing. Carpet looks new and fluffy again (and the carpet is 11 years old now).

Shark lift away

Freudianslip1 · 05/07/2019 23:59

For the posters advocating Henry/Hetty's; I'm wary to go bag to a bagged hoover because of cost. How often do you have to change it?

rhombusesarebuses · 06/07/2019 00:05

Seconding the Miele suggestions. The C3 cat & dog in particular

Reynshki · 06/07/2019 08:39

Just bought a Bosch Athlet. Best vac I’ve ever had.

PaulHollywoodsSexGut · 06/07/2019 08:59

Oh @Reynshki

I hope it lasts you the year I do as ours lasted a princely 13 months and then dead.

Check your warranty and keep the receipt.

Miele cat and dog

My Dyson is three years old and is the worst vacuum we have ever had. Awful. Watching with interest but wanted to add don’t buy a Dyson. I’d have been better on my hands and knees trying to clean the carpet sucking through a straw.

It was a Dyson V6 fluffy cordless. My husband said from day one it was the biggest waste of money on an appliance ever. We actually borrowed my Mum’s 20 year old spare vacuum this weekend to give the carpets a proper clean.

MsMustDoBetter · 06/07/2019 09:10

Miele every time.

YadiYadiYada · 06/07/2019 09:12

Shark LiftAway
I bloody love the thing!

Next after that would be a cordless Dyson. The only issue with this one is the short battery life, especially in the 'max' setting.

I'm a housekeeper to the fairly wealthy and use many expensive models of vacuums. My own Shark out-performs all my clients vacuums. I keep recommending Shark to my clients. Sadly Shark still isn't as widely known about as other brands just yet, so my wealthy clients have never heard of them. To my disappointment they won't entertain owning a brand that doesn't come with some sort of 'designer' status.

But without a doubt they're brilliant.

Dhalandchips · 06/07/2019 09:17

Watching with interest... I have a Hettie, just waiting for it to die. had a Henry before that. Lasted 15 years. The bloody things are indestructible.I really want a lightweight, cordless, efficient hoover. I hate lugging the massive Hettie around. Weighs a ton!

Moondancer73 · 06/07/2019 09:21

Miele. I'm a cleaner and they're the best I use in any house. Not cheap but definitely reliable - mine lasted well over ten years and only died when the kids knocked it down the stairs. I have a dyson that was given to me now and it's rubbish.

listsandbudgets · 06/07/2019 09:21

No idea about Hoover's but you've had lots of suggestions above.

For some awful reason I read Hoover as "husband" in the thread title.... was so glad when I realised I'd made a mistake

listsandbudgets · 06/07/2019 09:23

Moondancer, My mum has a shark and says its revolutionised her life

ChristinaMarlowe · 06/07/2019 09:26

Dyson cordless animal 10... Seriously the best hoover ever, actually don't hate hovering anymore! So easy and light, stairs are no longer dreaded!

YadiYadiYada · 06/07/2019 09:31

@Hmmmbop "How are sebo on stairs? They look cumbersome"

I have two clients with Sebo's and they're heavy, cumbersome, they develop a terrible loud squeak, its red light that is supposed to indicate something is wrong is constantly flickering and they give off so much heat. Its killing me in this current weather. It also has faffy expensive bags that start giving off a bad smell after 2 or 3 uses when it starts filling up. The suction is good but the above cons of the Sebo outweigh the one pro.

Trethew · 06/07/2019 09:40

Watching with interest because I need a new Hoover. Was about to get the Vax Blade 2 because it is recommended by Which and came out top in the Mumsnet best vacuum survey. Now worried because it doesn’t seem to figure highly in these recommendations

mrssoap · 06/07/2019 09:45

I can't fault the Henry hoover. Sucks up anything.

margaritasbythesea · 06/07/2019 09:46

I would never buy another vax. I've had two and they both died within a year.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 06/07/2019 09:48

Our Dyson died last year and I asked the same question here. The Shark Liftaway was recommended so we bought one.

It's brilliant. So much better than a Dyson.

Fluffycloudland77 · 06/07/2019 09:51

Miele cat and dog. There’s an outlet centre in Abingdon, oxon.

Fayrazzled · 06/07/2019 09:55

Sebo- I've had a Dyson and Miele in the past but wouldn't buy anything other than Sebo again.
