Hearing aid batteries-a query

Hippywannabe · 05/07/2019 17:51

Just a quick query. My surgery just down the road has just told me I can't get DH's batteries from them any more and I can only get them from the centre (nhs) that issued his aid. That is 15 miles away!
That seems bizarre. I have emailed to query it and am hoping it was just a receptionist on a bad day.
What does everyone else do?

We can only get them from the hospital - it is St Thomas and we are done 6 London. However I can ring them and request some in the post.

If you are desperate boots sells them for around £6 - we forget spares once and got some there.

Ps in our case it is our eldest child who has deafness.

I just buy batteries for ds' hearing aids off amazon as we're very rural so that's an option if you can afford it.

WellLetsSayHesSquare · 05/07/2019 19:40

Sometimes the pound shop has some in. They're part of a selection of tiny button batteries. Bought a load last time I saw em.

My local hospital dishes them out, but I have to take my card with me to prove I'm entitled to them (card issued by Audiology unit at the hospital in the nearby city). Or I can send card and request to Audiology who will post back. I get domes & tubes for the aids that way too.

BrigitsBigKnickers · 05/07/2019 19:45

Round here they can be collected from lots of different places. My dad gets his from the library. I know there are designated health centres where you can also pick them up.

GassyAss · 05/07/2019 19:54

We’ve started buying them from Amazon too.

chipsandpeas · 05/07/2019 19:58

my mum can either go to the library or the hospital to get replacements

SimonJT · 05/07/2019 20:02

I can only get my sons from the hearing clinic, they will however post some out if I send them a prepaid envelope.

Rainatnight · 05/07/2019 20:03

DP buys hers in Boots.

SauvignonBlanche · 05/07/2019 20:05

I find Amazon to be the best value

Soubriquet · 05/07/2019 20:06

I get them from my local hospital but if I need them desperately, boots sell them

Rememberallball · 05/07/2019 22:05

We used to get my dad’s from the local day centres (also called centre for the community in some areas) just by taking his issue book in with us - they would give him 2-4 packs depending on the person in the office. Might be worth asking your local one - if there is any in your area

AlexaAmbidextra · 05/07/2019 22:34

Yep. Local hospital audiology dept here.

newcupcake · 05/07/2019 23:23

Only the hospital who gave the aids here it drives me potty 😭 I don't understand at all why pharmacy's don't stock them

CrystalTits · 05/07/2019 23:29

FIL paid £32 for 6 batteries when he bought the hearing aid for MIL. He asked me to get him some replacements: less than £15 for 36 via Amazon 😲

BringOnTheScience · 06/07/2019 00:32

We buy DC2's from Amazon. Far easier & less hassle.

NannaLinley · 06/07/2019 06:59

Have you tried your local Specsavers. They may hold the NHS contract in your area and can issue them foc.

SparklesandFlowers · 06/07/2019 07:10

My GPs surgery give me new ones, same as my previous surgery. Before that, though, it was the issuing hospital (SE London, so two buses away, not an easy journey).

I've met different levels of this in my time though. Sometimes they need the brown book just for proof, sometimes they'll write in it. Sometimes they'll swap for my used ones, sometimes they refuse to take the old ones. And sometimes they'll happily give me 3 packs and sometimes they'll grudgingly give me 2.

I'm off to Poundland to stock up!

KnifeAngel · 06/07/2019 07:55

Ours did the same but they would post them out to you.

SomethingPhishy · 06/07/2019 07:59

I used to be able to get them from GP surgery but that stopped a while back. I now ring the audiology department who I am under & they post some out. I have a card instead of brown book now.

Muddlingalongalone · 06/07/2019 08:06

I've never tried because audiology post them to me, but our library has a sign about them up behind the counter. (It also issues recycling bags etc)

SeraphinaDombegh · 06/07/2019 08:21

It all depends where you live. Our NHS trust has recently "streamlined" the service, so where I could previously pop into a surgery a stone's throw from DS' school to pick them up, I now have to traipse 3 miles in the opposite direction to a bigger health centre. Ugh. Otherwise I can go to the hospital - but that's even more faff. I'd struggle if I didn't have a car.

Robodigger · 06/07/2019 08:27

My audiology department have a text service where you text in and they post them out, very handy!

BenWillbondsPants · 06/07/2019 08:29

I get them from the GP surgery or from audiology. Sometimes I buy them if I'm running low and can't get to either though.

That's a great idea.
