I know it’s not our choices
But if you could choose for them what direction would you guide them in
Or tell them to avoid

I had designs when they were little. They are 21 and 24 now. Both linguists and liberal arts orientated. After the trials of the teenage years I just want them to be hapoy and respectably productive.

12yr old DS , something to do with environmental engineering / reusable energy. A job that he's not going to be desk bound with but he can be more office based as he gets older. He has allergies so I worry about him not earning enough for medical treatment if the NHS is phased out.

10yr old DD. Something medical / chemistry.

As long as it pays their bills, ideally makes higher rate tax payers and they can comfortably do it until 70 really.

Longdistance · 04/07/2019 19:36

A pilot. If only one of my dds was a pilot I’d be happy. I was cabin crew for years, and did do some flying lessons, so on reflection if I had my time again I’d have been a pilot. A job for life and travel, with decent pay, what’s not to like? 🤷🏼‍♀️

yoursworried · 04/07/2019 19:39

Engineering, IT or finance and banking. Well paid which is needed these days, but not going to kill you off like medicine.
I am a teacher which I would rather they weren't. DH is an engineer- he enjoys it and earns well and we've had overseas opportunities from it which id like for them.

MonkeyTrap · 04/07/2019 19:42

I really don’t care. I want them to be happy and do whatever their skill set/desires lead them too.

My parents never pushed anything onto me and I’ve done alright. I think everyone has a talent and it’s a matter of fostering it (whether it’s academic or not).

IncognitaIgnorama · 04/07/2019 19:45

@Zampa Grin I had one of those - she's now a barrister

Passwordz · 04/07/2019 19:49

Re being an architect. We don’t live in the uk and things are different here. Plus who knows what things will be like in 15 years when mine venture into the workplace.

MinnieMountain · 04/07/2019 19:50

I hope he'll do some sort of engineering. He's very interested in how things work.

I'll discourage him from law.

sherbetmelon · 04/07/2019 19:53

A skill that they can do for me for free 😬 hairdresser? Beautician? Mechanic?

Oliversmumsarmy · 04/07/2019 19:54

Oscar winning actors so they can buy me a Bel Air mansion

Whathappenedtothelego · 04/07/2019 19:57

I want them to do something that they find fulfilling, and where they feel valued.
With a good work-life balance. Something that allows them to live somewhere that they actually want to live.

minesapinkginandlemonade · 04/07/2019 19:58

I think I'd like my son to do something that will allow him to be his own boss and build a business.

MamaLazarou · 04/07/2019 20:00

I'd like him to be a nurse because he is very kind, quick-thinking and good at science.

Xyzzzzz · 04/07/2019 20:02

Something practical. Having a degree myself I’ve never used, I’d advice them to something with prospects but it’s their life so you can only advice.

whitehalleve · 04/07/2019 20:06

Whatever they'd love to do.

Gertie75 · 04/07/2019 20:50

What career would you like your DC to have OP? Hack?

switswoo81 · 04/07/2019 20:55

I would love my dd's to follow me into teaching ( I'm in Ireland very different job) I have a great home life balance. Spent the 9 weeks hols in my 20's exploring the world and now I get to spend it with them. I home early and always there to make dinner with them.I am friends with lots of teachers so we have had outings all week.
Honestly though I just want them to do something they love and that they chose themselves.

Mummoomoocow · 04/07/2019 20:58

Not to go into retail.

To avoid uni unless it’s career specific or designed to teach a broader mindset

MellowMelly · 04/07/2019 21:04

I always wanted to do something in Forensics (I ended up in a Laboratory instead) so I’m secretly pleased that my daughter is studying to go into that field of work.

Youngandfree · 04/07/2019 21:07

I think my dd would be a great police detective 😂 she is relentless, really intuitive and can figure ppl out in a matter of seconds (it’s actually scary!)

And I think Ds would be suited as anything to do with farm machinery to engineering (dh is an engineer so maybe it’s possible)

FermatsTheorem · 04/07/2019 21:09

I've told mine I am 110% (football cliché) behind his desire to be a Premiership footballer so he can buy me an Aston Martin to entertain me in my dotage. Unfortunately it's beginning to dawn on him that he isn't that good.

Mac47 · 04/07/2019 21:09

As long as it's not teaching, I'm easy, although as a single parent I would prefer it to be a job that means she is secure financially.

CoconutMango · 04/07/2019 21:11

Count - what actually do you mean by stem? A science/maths degree ? Or an engineering degree or something specific? Its ot my field at all and I'm curious if you mean they have a specific job in mind or just do a maths degree and become a maths teacher for example....

I'd really like to advice my sciency daughters well but at the end of the day we dont have contacts or connections... but they are bright!

I feel sad for whomever said they dont care if their child is ahppy/enjoying it.

I've heard hairdressers are often v happy and have good work life balance and if it pays the bill's why not? I'd hate for my child at 30 to turn around and have felt forced into a particular profession and have to start over.

CoconutMango · 04/07/2019 21:11

I'd rather they didnt teach...

And I would love to teach in Ireland!

RedCrab · 04/07/2019 21:22

There might be jobs that aren’t invented yet. I do a job that wasn’t around when I was a kid. So who knows. Mainly just want them to be happy.
