I was having lunch in a restaurant this afternoon when I got a text from my very dear friend. Her husband is terminally ill and had a psychotic incident in the night.

It's all so very sad. DD, who happened to be at home offered to collect me from the nearest place as I was very upset.

While walking to the spot where she was to pick me up, some fucking prat told me to "smile, darling, you'll look so much better".

I swear if I had a gun in my bag i would have shot him. Firstly, I don't fucking want to look his version of " so much better", secondly, I'll look exactly how I am. If that's distressed ,as I was, what's it got to do with him?

For goodness sske, I'm nearly 70. When, exactly an i allowed to look exactly how I feel.

Sorry, rant over

Do you think all Americans carry guns around?

We are allowed to here, by law, and that is the point she was making. She's be a pistol packing mama if allowed - maybe.

I have a Smith & Wesson .38 I carry around some times.

MrsTerryPratchett · 04/07/2019 16:25

She's be a pistol packing mama if allowed - maybe.

Shockingly poor grammar there. You should be thoroughly ashamed.

MissConductUS · 04/07/2019 16:26

In the US, more women serve on juries than men, so there's an excellent chance you'd never be convicted. And if the district attorney was a woman, you'd likely just be charged with unlawful discharge of a firearm within city limits and pay a small fine.

Queenoftheashes · 04/07/2019 16:28

Yeah I hate that too. Someone said it to me when my cat had just died. What is it they say? “Cheer up love it might never happen”. What is wrong with these people?

thewildrose · 04/07/2019 16:29

I think OP is trying to make light of how angry she felt with the context of the awful situation she's faced with. No all Americans don't carry guns but if she was in America and did carry a gun she'd have reacted in a violent way.

Although I don't think joking about it is massively tasteful Grin

OP, I'm sorry Thanks keep venting x

thewildrose · 04/07/2019 16:31

Oh I misread. Any man who says any variation on "smile love" needs to be thrown into the sea.

bloodywhitecat · 04/07/2019 16:32

My mum was in my uncle's open top car, they were driving back from Great Ormond Street where my little sister (almost 3 years old) had just died on the operating table, some dickhead pulled up next to them at the lights and told mum to "cheer up, it might never happen".

Much love and strength to you, some people have no idea.

RosaWaiting · 04/07/2019 16:33

Ugh
I wish you could shoot him. Only way he’ll improve.

SapatSea · 04/07/2019 16:39

Bet they wouldn't say it to a man!

MissConductUS · 04/07/2019 16:40

We are allowed to here, by law, and that is the point she was making.

And it's also highly regulated in many places. In NY it's extremely difficult to get a concealed carry permit. I don't know any one who carries a gun.

Thank you for your supportive messages. And for clarifying my intent, I did indeed mean that if I was in the US i would be more likely to be carrying a gun. I can be a little slow on the uptake, at times, but I do know that shooting someone usually carries, at the least, some form of investigation.

Amyway, wine has been taken, DD has sorted out other mundane stuff (so I don't have to bother) and I'm much calmer now. I no longer wish to kill random strangers who have no manners at all.

The day after my dad died, some idiot in the street told me to "cheer up, love, it might never happen!"
l'm afraid l wasn't as polite as perhaps l should have been, and gave him both barrels (figuratively, not literally). He did apologise, and l hope he thinks twice about saying it to anyone else.

RiddleyW · 04/07/2019 16:52

What a prick.

I love the people saying "oh women do this too" - bollocks do they.

higgley · 04/07/2019 16:55

Oh I hate that OP. Generally always men directed at women. Being dominating pricks again. Rant away OP and Thanks

StCharlotte · 04/07/2019 16:55

The scene: Wetherspoons at London Victoria Station...

Bloke - "Cheer up love, it may never happen."
Me - "It's 10am on a Tuesday and I'm in Wetherspoons drinking a large Scotch. Trust me, it's happened."

(I'd just been made redundant from my dream job)

Sorry to hear about your friend and her husband OP Flowers

BrendasUmbrella · 04/07/2019 16:55

I find a fuck off dickhead works wonders......

The type of man who tells women they should be smiling in his presence may not be the most respectful and non-misogynistic of people. So a "fuck off dickhead" could work wonders at getting you punched in the face.

ginghamtablecloths · 04/07/2019 17:00

Annoying, isn't it? I used to get this quite a bit when I was young but nobody's said, "cheer up, it may never happen" to me for ages, thank goodness. Now I have the confidence to tell them to piss off.

LittleWalnutTree · 04/07/2019 17:00

Yep. "Cheer up love, it might never happen" is what was said to me as I was getting in my car in tears after having received a phone call to tell me that a close relative had died suddenly.

I told him it has just happened actually and why didn't he fuck right off and leave me alone. Good job he walked the other way, because I'd have been sorely tempted to run the fucker over.

LaundryIsADisease · 04/07/2019 17:01

I'm so sorry OP.

Such twatty behaviour.

Deuxcaggages · 04/07/2019 17:02

Why on earth would you even say it, it’s not a particularly funny comment and if i wanted to cheer a stranger up, I would smile at them - which they are at liberty to completely ignore.
Mostly I’d mind my own business, but you have to wonder wtf goes through the minds of the dickheads that say this stuff.

user1471453601 · 04/07/2019 17:03

I have to say that the young male. restaurant manager did come over to me with a load of tissues and just said " you look like you could use these, do you need us to call a cab? ".

So, I'm going to put restaurant managers response against fucking stupid man's response, and call it a draw.

But I really thought I'd got beyond an age where men expected me to be fucking decorative. There you go, guess not

stackthecats · 04/07/2019 17:05

I think that's definitely a moment where it's entirely reasonable just to give the bastard the finger, at the very least. Sometimes it's the only thing to do (absent the gun).

IDontGiveABagOfDicks · 04/07/2019 17:06

I’ve had this. After a funeral. I was clearly in very formal funeral attire.

“Doesn’t she know girls look prettier with a smile mate?” (Aimed at my Dad)

I was 17. Had just buried my best friend who was 19, and watched his parents bury their only child which was traumatic as fuck.

I just launched myself at him. Screeching and swearing. Think I actually did hit him Blush Sad

My Dad scooped me up and walked away carrying me.

TheBoots · 04/07/2019 17:06

I had this once when on my way to the hospital having just had the call that there was nothing further they could do for my Dad.
I took the opportunity to take out all the pain and stress of the preceding few weeks on that particular arsehole. Picture me, wild-eyed and snot-nosed, screaming every obscenity you can think of at 4pm outside Paddington...he'll not do that again in a hurry!
