Wanting to try get baby to recognise names etc so with him having 2 grandmas and both being known as 'Grandma', would they be called Grandma June & Grandma Sue or Grandma Smith & Grandma Jones for example?

First names here

LiveatCityHall · 03/07/2019 13:53

When I was a child, we used surnames for our grandparents, but now I'm a mum myself, my DS calls my DM his "Nonna" and my DH's DM his Grandma. Makes it much easier!

Bezalelle · 03/07/2019 14:39

When I was a child I had a Nanna Dadsurname and Nanna Mumsurname. Looking back, it's really formal. Won't be doing that with future DC (MIL will be called a foreign version of Nanna and my mum will just be Nan).

ChihuahuaMummy1 · 03/07/2019 14:42

Not helpful but we have Nana Red car and nana blue car here Grin

Teacakeandalatte · 03/07/2019 14:46

If they both have to be Grandma I would do Grandma Firstname or a nice nickname. Agree Grandma lastname sounds very formal nowadays.

codenameduchess · 03/07/2019 14:50

I always had grandma and nana. My dads mum thought grandma sounded too old so she was happy with nana and it made it easier for us.

My DD has my mum as grandma and my grandma she calls gran. If DHs parents weren't knobs his mum would be nan to keep it simple.

I'd go with grandma firstname if I was you op. It sounds more familiar/family-like

BlueMerchant · 03/07/2019 14:53

I'd go with first name. Also seems more 'fair' as your local will have (probably) the same surname as one but not the other.( Am sure some people would get upset over this)

BlueMerchant · 03/07/2019 14:53

Lo not local

jackparlabane · 03/07/2019 14:54

My kids have ended up with one of each! My mum wanted to be Grandma first name, but is in fact Grandma, my dad is Grandpa Firstname, and my ILs are Granny and Granddad Surname after my nieces set the trend.
Mum has a much longer name than my dad which may have caused it, but my dad thinks it's hilarious that he gets a name and my mum who wanted it doesn't. Serves her right for trying to call ds a different name until he was old enough to say 'My name' s not x, it's y. You're very silly, Grandma'!

amusedbush · 03/07/2019 14:57

Mine are both Granny .

SurreyMumOfOne · 03/07/2019 15:02

Fortunately for us, one chose Grandma and one chose Nan. With two Grandmas, I'd use first names.

bringthethunder · 03/07/2019 15:21

My kids made up their own names for all their grannies - we have a Granny Govan (the town she lives in ), a Granny Tigger (she has a massive Tigger teddy that the kids loved as babies) and a Granny Breagha (dogs name) Grin 11 years later and that's still the names we all use. "We're going to granny Tiggers" Smile

OldAndWornOut · 03/07/2019 15:25

My grandsons (slim) other Nan suggested we use the terms 'Big Nanny' and 'Little Nanny'.
I declined!

WillYouDoTheFandango · 03/07/2019 15:30

We have a Nan and a gran. My friends little boys call their grandads grandad Terry and grandad moustache Grin

Loveislandaddict · 03/07/2019 15:34

We have Grandma/grandad ‘hobby’ and Grandma/Grandad ‘local attration’ (Eg castle).

One of my Grandparents was GP ‘dogs name’. Until we became teenagers, and then they were GP ‘sirname’.

I sometimes think GP names evolve naturally. You may want to call them Grandad and Grandma, but they end up being called Gramps and Granny.

Zoobunny · 03/07/2019 15:34

I have a Nannie and a Nanna (Surname)

If both want to be Grandma then I think I prefer surnames to forenames. Not sure why though, maybe because most people I know use surnames.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 03/07/2019 15:39

We have Bus Grandad and Gardening Grandad... Bus driver and a gardener.

TheBigFatMermaid · 03/07/2019 15:50

My DGC have three sets of Grandparents, they call us Granny and Grumpy, Nanny and Granddad and Nanna and Granddad.

No need for names, as even the Granddads can be called Granddad with Nanny or Nanna.

UnicornPug · 03/07/2019 15:56

We have grandad beard and grandad first name. Dm is grandma and Dmil was Nanny as niece had named her.

I work with little ones and I’ve heard some lovely ones. Nanny with-a-dogs, Grandma cake, Grandma flowers, grandad pirate, grandad glasses, granny chimney are just a few I remember. Let the name evolve naturally... Smile

mrsm43s · 03/07/2019 16:02

We have Nanny and Grandma (chosen by the GPs).

Then we have Nanny's Grandad and Grandma's Grandad. (They call them both Grandad, its only if they need to differentiate that they make them the property of their wives!)

fleshmarketclose · 03/07/2019 16:03

We had Nanna and Mamma when we were growing up. Mine didn't have two Grandmas but called their Grandads, white Grandad and black Grandad after their hair colour. Whatever names you give your child might just decide for himself how to distinguish between the two.

dudsville · 03/07/2019 16:15

We always the surname in my family. In my heart though one is "grandma" and the other " grandma surname" simply because I was much closer to grandma.

NeverSayFreelance · 03/07/2019 16:16

Both my grans are Gran Surname, but I think it's a bit too formal nowadays and I probably wouldn't choose it.

notso · 03/07/2019 16:22

I had two Grandma first names.

My kids have Grandma & Grumpa and Nana and Taido.

DS3's best friend has Nana Bingo and Nana Holiday because ones always at the bingo and the other is always on holiday Grin

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 03/07/2019 16:25

I had Nan and Nanny.

My brother's kids had Big Nanny and Little Nanny
My sister's kid called then Nanma and Nanny.

It honestly just works out.
