Begging Looking for inspiration for a class teacher gift to be bought between 25 parents please! Lady is approximately 55-60 years old, wears no wedding ring/goes by Miss and has no children. Would love some ideas for a joint class gift around £50. Thank you for reading.

First, I am a TA, not a teacher, but I am very lucky and often get given gifts by the children and their parents. I also like to give gift to the teachers I've worked with. The biggest problem is what do you buy someone you don't really know? I see suggestions for wine, spa day vouchers, food items etc and yet they would be wasted on me - I have a collection of gifted wine going back several years, a spa day would be my idea of torture and food items, whilst they can be lovely, often end up being vi en away or just not eaten - we've literally just opened a box of chocolates from Christmas! I also see posters poo poohing ideas for stationery, garden items, etc. Yet I would love some nice stationery , a pretty scarf, or a houseplant. I often give my colleagues a nice notebook since I know many of them use them constantly, more than their diaries really. Unless you know something she really likes or enjoys, I'd go with the voucher and let her choose.

Vouchers are fine. John Lewis nicer than Amazon (and if no John Lewis near, JK delivers free to Waitrose stores)

JL not JK

What a depressing post.

You can't go wrong with John Lewis vouchers

KurriKurri · 04/07/2019 11:06

What are her hobbies ? I'm 59 and would like anything to do with my garden (plant vouchers etc), or anything to do with art and painting, or vouchers for dept store or amazon. I would hate spa vouchers, would prefer not to get chocolates as I am generally dieting, and prefer not to get wine as I struggle to get through a bottle in short space of time (also single) - wouldn't mind gin or whisky though.
I also like fancy teas and coffees. If she likes cooking - a selection of herbs and spices and a recipe book maybe.

Have you tried www.giftsforbarrenspinsters.com?

Seriously don't over think it.
Vouchers for JL .
They won't end up in the charity shop

Teacher here. I would go with a John Lewis voucher and a box of chocolates. However, the thing that a lot of teachers really appreciate more than anything is an email to the Headteacher that says something along the lines of 'now that the year is coming to an end, I just wanted to say that we are really grateful for the hard work that Mrs x has put in with our son/daughter this year and we are really pleased with their progress etc.' Obviously tailor it to what you are genuinely thankful for but a formal note to your boss saying that you are great is often worth much more than a 'world's best teacher' mug or a box of chocolates.'

@LostInNorfolk Stationery is a crap gift, a bit like giving a carpenter a cheap saw but with diamonte- so isn't it wow.

My SiL is a primary school teacher. She, and all her teacher friends, LOVE stationery

Contraceptionismyfriend · 04/07/2019 14:56

@flobella thank you so much for this. My DS has had an absolutely amazing teacher for the last two years and I've been wracking my brain for a gift that shows our gratitude for everything she has done.
I'm going to get the nice stuff but i am definitely going to email the head as well.

@Contraceptionismyfriend You’re welcome 😊

@newmomof1 I agree - I love stationery! Especially if it is a bit posh, i.e., something you couldn’t really justify buying yourself.

As an English teacher one of the loveliest fists I had was an engraved silver bookmark.

If it was me, I would always like a nice colourful shrub for the garden, as this will grow.and give years of pleasure, assuming there is garden of course.
