Would you eat these

I hate wasting food but have discovered the sausages planned for dinner are out of date ....30th June ....would you cook them anyway if they smell ok (haven't opened packet yet) children in household but all fairly robust

If they smell fine go for it.If you'd bought butchers sausages you just sniff them.

sacope · 03/07/2019 10:40

No. I never eat out of date stuff.

Stripes100 · 03/07/2019 10:43

I would absolutely eat them if they smell ok!

Damntheman · 03/07/2019 10:45

Just smell them and use if they smell okay! Use by dates are often very conservative.

anothernamereally · 03/07/2019 10:47

Right I'll do the sniff test (later as I'm not ready to cook them until later) and report back

MyFokMarelize · 03/07/2019 10:48

Lots of preservatives in sausages so yes, if they smell ok, I'd definitely eat them.

Katinski · 03/07/2019 10:48

Sniff them before cooking. If they pass the sniff test they're OK Smile

HippyTrails · 03/07/2019 10:51

depends what they are - I would unless they are chicken or turkey sausages

BarbaraofSevillle · 03/07/2019 10:54

Not sure. I normally easily go a day or two over as long as they look and smell OK, but you have to draw the line somewhere.

Genuinely unsure what I would do or the likelihood of them being off at this stage. I would have put them in the freezer 2 or 3 days ago so don't have to make this sort of decision.

Mammajay · 03/07/2019 10:55

I would if they have been in the fridge

Nesssie · 03/07/2019 10:56

If they'd been in the fridge, yes no problem

SpuriouserAndSpuriouser · 03/07/2019 10:57

I wouldn't, not all bacteria that can cause illness will have a smell. I wouldn’t want to risk it personally.

TinselAndKnickers · 03/07/2019 10:57

Yep absolutely

user1469530553 · 03/07/2019 10:57

Yep, totally. (Food technologist here)

anothernamereally · 03/07/2019 11:01

I know I should have put them in the freezer/ used them earlier but I didn't know they were in the fridge (bottom drawer) as I didn't buy them and I've had a busy few days - it's not a usual occurrence

OP posts:
driggle · 03/07/2019 11:04

I wouldn't personally but then I'm pretty strict with use by dates (I'm a little more forgiving with best before dates). 3 days over the use by date is a definite no from me.

BarbaraofSevillle · 03/07/2019 11:06

It wasn't the intention to come over all superior with the 'you should have put them in the freezer' comment.

I just meant that, as I too don't like to waste food, one thing I'm really good at is putting things in the freezer on time because most of the time it makes my life easier to do so. it's the ultimate procrastination and excuse - can't be arsed to decide what to do with those sausages, cook them, want takeaway or what ever - whack em in the freezer. Problem solved.

user realistically, how long do you think it's likely to be safe? I know it depends on how stuffs being stored in production, transport, shop and home but what sort of 'rules' do you apply yourself?

anothernamereally · 03/07/2019 11:12

It's ok Babara it's myself I'm cross with not you
Pork sausages for those that asked... a pack of Lincolnshire (6) and a pack of Cumberland (6) with the date of 30th and a pack of plain (10) with a date of 1st July
Apparently dh was going to cook them on bbq Saturday but decided we had enough food on already

OP posts:
amusedbush · 03/07/2019 11:14

Yeah, I'd eat them if they had been in the fridge and they looked/smelled/felt okay. I'm pretty lax with this stuff - I frequently eat reheated rice and I'm still here Grin

MumApr18 · 03/07/2019 12:30

I am just over a 3 day V+D session that I'm attributing to out of date sausages. I smelt them and they were ok, OH agreed but the next day and the days after have been hellish. I wouldn't risk it!

MumApr18 · 03/07/2019 12:31

Oh I should mention they were just ASDA Cumberland sausages, 4 days out of date.

trackingmedown · 03/07/2019 12:40

I ate some on Monday (1st July) that were dated June 27th. I sniffed them and they smelled fresh. I’m here to tell the tale.....for now.

DontCallMeShitley · 03/07/2019 12:41

If they haven't developed little white bubbles under the skins I would cook them (I didn't say eat because I don't eat meat but I do cook it for others).

IhateBoswell · 03/07/2019 12:42

No, not even with a sniff test.

Lllot5 · 03/07/2019 12:45

Didn’t realise you had 22 sausages to use up think you might have to lose some of them.
Smell them and see like others have said. How annoying I hate it when I miss things like this.
