Aldi, your days are numbered

First you fuck with the design of your pull ups so they give my toddler a wedgie and leak all the time, but now, now you've gone too far by changing your camembert.

I made gorgeous chorizo bread, I prepared the cheese, I popped a bottle of fizz and it all went to hell when I baked your stupid camembert. The packaging had changed but I never expected the puffed up scrambled egg mess that came out of the oven. Where was the ooze? Where was the goo. So. Disappointed.

I will now be frequenting tesco for my cheese needs.

You're on your last chance aldi, stop messing with my shopping.

Fruit and veg definitely varies store to store. Ours thankfully lasts ages. Asdas however does not, and their bananas are always weirdly chewy.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 02/07/2019 20:34

Bollocks....fruit and veg great quality in my store and mostly british.

Isn’t that kind of the point. They source their fruit and veg locally where possible so the quality can vary hugely from store to store.

Ours is fine, and much better than either Tesco or the co-op which are the other two options.

RosesAndRaindrops · 02/07/2019 20:34

Nappies seem fine to me?

Been a few years since last used them (youngest now 12!) but Aldi's nappies were always brilliant.
Used to prefer them over some of the bigger brands

Katisha · 02/07/2019 20:34

The aldi luxury croissants have changed for the worse recently too

Isleepinahedgefund · 02/07/2019 20:36

They no longer stock the special buys in my local Aldi.

Damn you - now when I go for a pint of milk I just have to get a pint of milk as there is now no possibility of accidentally also purchasing a sun lounger and electrical drill because they were on offer!!

RosaWaiting · 02/07/2019 20:37

Oh! I thought it was me and the temp was wrong.

Is it almost...plasticky?

CasperGutman · 02/07/2019 20:38

The aldi luxury croissants have changed for the worse recently too

That's definitely true.

Generally though, I love Aldi. Their stuff is generally fine (as good as Tesco/Sainsbury's and in some cases better) and the prices are great. Never had a problem with the fruit and veg in the branches I've been to in South Wales.

EssentialHummus · 02/07/2019 20:38

Yes, fine... tell me more about this chorizo bread please OP? Grin

Alabasterangel6 · 02/07/2019 20:38

Someone has mentioned this. The Camembert issues is indeed pasteurisation. If you want to bake the cheese and it to be a gooey dippy cheese you need to bake an unpasteurised one. The others just won’t won’t. They have probably changed from one type to another.

Tesco def do an unpasteurised one. Some supermarkets also sell a ‘baking camembert’ which basically is the same thing; an unpasteurised version.

notso · 02/07/2019 20:41

I mean, approx 2.50 to 3 a punnet of say raspberries or strawberries when you can get nice punnets of fruit from Aldi for 69p?
But when you know you have to throw half of them in the bin so buy three 69p punnets it's false economy. I'd rather get some from M&S knowing they'll all be edible.

MadisonAvenue · 02/07/2019 20:42

I used to do most of my shopping at Aldi and just topped up at Tesco but I tried a Tesco home delivery when I couldn’t get to the store one week and got virtually everything from there and surprisingly it didn’t work out any more expensive.

Plus Aldi had recently reduced the number of slices of ham (and therefore the weight) in the pack that we liked but increased the price by 10p.
That was my fuck you Aldi moment.

CaptainPovey · 02/07/2019 20:42

I have found from personal experience I like to shop around; being rigid does not always work.

As an example, Ald/Lidl frozen prawns are way better quality than other supermarkets for the same price

Flat bread and pitta are over inflated in the big four as an another example and are the exact same thing.

If you know what you like and are lucky enough to have a choice of supermarkets make the most of it.

It is not brand snobbery; do what suits you best

BakewellGin1 · 02/07/2019 20:43

Think quality varies store by store.. we have two shit local ones and one amazing new one..
I only buy some shopping in Aldi rest comes via Asda delivery but love
Nappies
Wipes
Aussie copy Shampoo
Special Buys: hot cloth cleanser, face creams, mascara etc
Son LOVES their lasange, dough balls, garlic bread, cod bites, chicken etc and Im a fan of their stir fry and jacket potatoes... ohhhh and oaties choc biscuits Grin

madpulse29 · 02/07/2019 20:43

The fruit and veg at Aldi is horrible and the meat and chicken not so great either.I don’t think Aldi is any cheaper these days than Tesco and Asda who have lowered their prices to compete.

I like the Co-op for quality, expensive but I buy some things there and go to Morrisons for other bits.

Nameusernameuser · 02/07/2019 20:44

I refuse to buy the Aldi cheese. It is shit. It is always scrambled egg.

I'll stick to the le rustique one in Tesco thanks!

MyDcAreMarvel · 02/07/2019 20:44

I swapped to Morrisons nutmeg pull ups, can recommend them.

Comps83 · 02/07/2019 20:46

Lidl’s Camembert always do this too

TheFairyCaravan · 02/07/2019 20:46

We buy a lot of berries. If we get them on a Friday from Tesco they're gone off by the end of the weekend. However, if we buy them from Aldi the blueberries are still going strong the following Thursday or Friday. Bananas last longer from Aldi too.

No one here notices that we've changed to Aldi ketchup. We use Formil washing powder from Lidl. It smells exactly the same as Persil. When DS1 comes back from his army exercises, where he's had the same kit on for over a week, it's filthy with mud, oil and river water and shrinks to high heaven, Formil gets every last bit out on a 40 degree wash.

We've started using Aldi and Lidl more and more, not just for the savings, but because the quality is much better than Tesco. Both our kids shop at Aldi and DS2 has converted his girlfriend's mum too.

Sparklingbrook · 02/07/2019 20:49

I had some Lidl Blueberries at the weekend. They tasted of nothing. The rasperries were nice for the ten minutes before they turned to mush.

DH bought a fantastic BBQ cleaning brush and hot glue gun from there though. Grin

WineIsMyCarb · 02/07/2019 20:50

I've stopped shopping there because I'm sick of filling a bag with unrecyclable plastic when I get back with my food.

nespressowoo · 02/07/2019 20:51

The pull-ups are bloody terrible!

skybluee · 02/07/2019 20:55

My issue is that a lot of the fruit and veg is in huge packs and if you live on your own, it's false economy compared to a supermarket where you can buy one or two and consume 100% of it. I know there are ways around it but with some things there aren't, you just can't freeze some things. I really don't like waste. It seems to go off fast, want things to last more than a day or so (again more waste). It's a bit of a shame but I do much prefer things in smaller packages.

stayathomer · 02/07/2019 20:56

Id do most shopping in Aldi and love it. The things I wouldn't buy there are meat, ketchup, waffles, tuna and beans and fizzy drinks. For everything else I think they're great- love their cordial, fruit and veg ( in particular salad stuff), sauces/Passat etc

Bluearsedfly36 · 02/07/2019 20:58

I've found Aldi nappies rubbish recently, but Lidl's were great since they changed them. Love Tesco nappies too.

CandleWithHair · 02/07/2019 20:59

@TheBabyAteMyBrain I’m sorry about your cheese but.....can I have this gorgeous chorizo bread recipe pls? Grin
