Can you pass Life in the UK Test?

Anyone applying for citizenship has to pass this test. It is based on things that people are supposed to know if they live in the UK. Can you pass it?

I failed tests 1 and 2, and some of the questions I got right were lucky guesses. I’m in my 30s, born and lived in UK all my life.

Pieceofpurplesky · 01/07/2019 22:50

Passed at last. What bizarre questions - surely putting milk in last is more appropriate

SpaceCadet4000 · 01/07/2019 22:50

I passed, 19/24. The date ones always get me- I can tell you lots about the War of the Roses or when we joined the EEC, or when the land bridge to Europe ceased to exist...but the exact years always trip me up.

WafflingDreamer · 01/07/2019 22:52

My DH took this last year. The test is simply a way to show you can memorise facts. We probably spent about £25 buy the official books and test papers and then the test itself which is £50. Also there are 30 test centres but IIRC over 10 of them are in London, the nearest test centres to us were over an hour drive away and annoyingly very few seem to have any parking.

My DH now has Indefinite Leave to Remain in the UK but the visa process has been soul destroying and has left us thousands of pounds in debt.

dreichuplands · 01/07/2019 23:01

I passed at 80% but my English history dates aren't great!
I reckon that we should all have to pass this before we can vote.

thewinkingprawn · 01/07/2019 23:20

How many volunteers does the national trust have? WHY? Wtaf.

KnittingForMittens · 01/07/2019 23:20

I tried it before and failed! I have been in UK all my life.

Mentounasc · 01/07/2019 23:33

I've just passed Test 1 with 19/24, despite having lived outside the UK for most of my adult life and being deemed insufficiently British to be able to vote in elections.

Fortunately I took German citizenship some years back and was most satisfied to pass the citizenship test with 33/33 correct .

GrimDamnFanjo · 02/07/2019 00:40

I passed but take issue with the civil service political question. It depends on your grade, role and department...

Ayemama · 02/07/2019 00:54

I've failed 2 of them (1&8) good job I was born here, huh?

Monsterdogs · 02/07/2019 01:04

'What time do the pubs open?' 😂

2strands · 02/07/2019 01:11

I guessed most of them and got 16/24 so I've failed.

My last question asked me if darts and pool were pub games yet the question before asked who was on the throne in 17canteen. So random.

echt · 02/07/2019 03:25

I was born in the UK, lived there for 50+ years and have excellent general knowledge. I failed Test 1 and have to say the Australian one is way more straightforward, factual, not attitudinal. Who the hell knows about labour shortages after the Black Death? I did, actually, but it's bit niche. What sort of reading is required for this, I wonder?

I got 100% on my Aussie citizenship test and looking at it both as the tested and from the point of view of second language speakers (teacher speaking), it was a model of clarity and a reasonable test of reasonable knowledge.

BitOfFun · 02/07/2019 03:45

I've just quizzed DH, and he failed with 62.5%. He's actually a clever man.

Aebj · 02/07/2019 03:48

I failed test one . Only got 70%. I did guess some as my history wasn’t great ( not having needed to know this stuff for 30 years!!). I guessed right about the World Wide Web.!! Thought it was strange to ask about 5 times Olympics winner. However I knew that one ( why do I need to know this information!!)

Bagadverts · 02/07/2019 04:24

Did it twice, passed both times 18/24 and 21/24. Most of it was fine, fell down on history. Definitely surprised by a couple of answers such as one about role of the monarch.

user1497863568 · 02/07/2019 04:34

I got 75% and I live in Australia.

ICouldBeSomebodyYouKnow · 02/07/2019 17:56

I passed, just, with 18. Made silly mistakes on 2 of them, ie didn't read the question properly!

ScreamingValenta · 02/07/2019 20:11

I love history, but I'm not convinced half-baked multiple choice questions are relevant to a 'Life in the UK' test.

If the idea is to cultivate UK newcomers' interest in the history of their new country, they'd be better off giving them a choice of topics to research and produce a short essay or presentation on their favourite. All the multiple-choice history questions will do is encourage rote-learning of facts that will quickly be forgotten.

reluctantbrit · 02/07/2019 20:20

@ScreamingValenta this is how one part of the English test (verbal) works. You choose a subject and then talk a out it for 10 minutes.

DH and I had the same examiner, i talked about how Tudor history takes over everything from education to fiction to historic places (they always do a Tudor thing even if there are lots of other periods to show off) and she was in stitches and DH talked about beer brewing and discovered that she also was a home rewear and they exchanged book recommendations.

reluctantbrit · 02/07/2019 20:20

Home brewer

Aaarrgghhh · 02/07/2019 20:39

I’m not even going to attempt it. I’m not sure why someone would need to know half the questions asked if trying to live in the country. Especially historical dates etc.

ScreamingValenta · 02/07/2019 20:43

That sounds interesting, reluctant - and much more useful than the multiple choice qs.

MyDcAreMarvel · 02/07/2019 20:50

Failed 13/24

Aragog · 02/07/2019 20:51

Test 14 - 20/24 though feel one incorrect answer should have been more explicit that it wanted me to click on TWO answers, not just one.

However, many were just lucky guesses.
