Can you pass Life in the UK Test?

Anyone applying for citizenship has to pass this test. It is based on things that people are supposed to know if they live in the UK. Can you pass it?

75% pass on test 1. Some odd questions though - when the channel formed! Who knows? Who cares?!

TheOrigRightsofwomen · 01/07/2019 11:09

17/24 = fail. They can sod off with their history questions!

SetPhasersTaeMalkie · 01/07/2019 11:09

I failed test 1&2. Passed test 3 with 83.3%. Phew!😯

Struggled a little bit with the black death!!!

SetPhasersTaeMalkie · 01/07/2019 11:11

I didn't know the population of the UK either.

stucknoue · 01/07/2019 11:14

I got one wrong but it's misleading (apparently the queen chooses life peers, but actually the government gives a list to the queen and she doesn't question it so I don't think you can say that the queen chooses them, I know exactly how the system works!)

BoudicasBoudoir · 01/07/2019 11:23

@crustycrab Hallowe’en is originally a Celtic festival taken to the US by emigrants from the UK and Ireland. We very much celebrated it in Scotland when I was a child (long ago) and still do.

teyem · 01/07/2019 11:23

Another question made it clear they wanted you to agree that we enjoy freedom of speech. But we don't really have freedom of speech, what we have are a bunch of laws that govern what we cannot say but we cannot lean on any constitutional protections to defend what we can say.

Blibbyblobby · 01/07/2019 11:24

This is an exam written by a middle classed white male who went to a public school. Obviously Britain would best be inhabited only by them, ideally

Not convinced by that ...I messed up a question on the different Eids

(I failed the test)

RubberTreePlant · 01/07/2019 11:27

But we don't really have freedom of speech, what we have are a bunch of laws that govern what we cannot say but we cannot lean on any constitutional protections to defend what we can say.

That's very true.

listsandbudgets · 01/07/2019 11:27

Apparently not... failed with 16/24

What I dont understand, is why new citizens need to know half of this stuff. Hardly necessary is it to drop into conversation "did you know that after the black death a whole new class of land owners rose up" or "Wow, found out today the church of England has more than one name" or "Loch Lomand is in West Scotland"

Yes its stuff that you might absorb as general knowledge over time but its hardly essential is it Confused

LaundryIsADisease · 01/07/2019 11:28

I passed the test I did easily but one of the questions I had marked wrong was incorrect! I know it's wrong because I deal with it in real life.

jennymanara · 01/07/2019 11:29

I thought Loch Lomond was in the east of scotland so got that wrong. I have been there as well, but I know we travelled there on a train going up the east coast.

Failed, born and raised in the UK. Some of those questions are ludicrous.

CanoeDoYouThinkYouAre · 01/07/2019 11:35

100% on test one, where's my medal?

Did chuckle at the idea of Grimsby or Scunthorpe being war memorials.

P1nkHeartLovesCake · 01/07/2019 11:36

Well I failed and I was born in the uk but then I don’t even know the words to the national anthem so wasn’t expecting to pass if I’m honest.

Sgtmajormummy · 01/07/2019 11:37

Passed 2, failed 1.
My knowledge of Horrible Histories saved me on a few questions.

jennymanara · 01/07/2019 11:41

Got one question wrong that asked true or false - arranged marriages are not acceptable in the UK. I said true. The answer was false as they are legal and arranged marriages happen.
It is a totally ambiguous question as yes they are legal and happen, but many people do view them as unacceptable.

When did modern tennis evolve in England?

Who gives a shit?

GarakIsMySweetheart · 01/07/2019 11:56

Also failed test 1. 16/24.

I'll be off then...

TheBullshitGoesOn · 01/07/2019 12:39

Failed test 9.

underneaththeash · 01/07/2019 12:43

I got most right, wasn't sure when the forced marriage act was introduced in Scotland or when the NI parliament was first established.

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 01/07/2019 12:44

Passed, despite always having been crap at dates.

TheBullshitGoesOn · 01/07/2019 12:45

But passed test 1.

I can stay!

cookiemonster3 · 01/07/2019 13:21

Got 17 and failed. Oh well best move abroad then lol

glitterfarts · 01/07/2019 13:56

I had to sit it and passed easily first go. There is a study guide and if you are actually interested in passing (ie need citizenship), you'd read it and the test would be easy.

I don't mind it - if people want to belong to Britain, they should have a basic knowledge of traditions, history, laws and conventions.

Other countries have similar tests.
