Clothes to get through pregnancy without spending a fortune?

Fairyjuice · 30/06/2019 18:12

I'm currently 12 weeks pregnant and my jeans are already getting tight and uncomfortable 🙈 Unfortunately stupidly I threw out all of my maternity clothes after my last pregnancy so am starting over and don't want to spend a fortune. I've already ordered some maternity jeans and leggings from DP, but need some inspiration for tops and dresses. I prefer loose floaty stuff that falls over the bump to maternity ones that stick to the bump and emphasise it.

Also, while we're on the subject- what knickers give the best shape during pregnancy? My current ones are sitting under my stomach, but all of my stomach muscles have relaxed so my belly just looks flabby under t-shirts. Are there any comfy supportive knickers that aren't too tight that will give me a nice shape?

Sorry, no advice but following! I’m in exactly the same boat x

Karigan195 · 30/06/2019 18:21

I got a bundle from eBay early on and it’s seen me through to 32 weeks for only £50 in total and that’s with buying a swim suit new from Jojo maman.

Karigan195 · 30/06/2019 18:21

Oh and that’s with work clothes too!

Asda George do a massive range. They have packs of basic tops etc.

GreenTulips · 30/06/2019 18:27

Everything five pounds has maternity clothes

thundermum · 30/06/2019 18:27

Came here to say ASSA. H&M good too.

thundermum · 30/06/2019 18:27

ASDA!!!

kayakingmum · 30/06/2019 18:29

I know you wanted advice on tops, but I bought maternity leggings and jeans which ended up too tight. My best purchases by miles were a couple of XXL baggy cotton trousers (Harlem type I think) I bought from the local market. £5 each. Lovely and cool and comfortable. If you have a market near you I recommend checking out the clothing stalls.

I just wore stretchy dresses from primark after seeing an insta mum in them

TheBabyAteMyBrain · 30/06/2019 18:33

Primark stretchy and floaty clothing, eBay bundles and Great big granny pants up to your armpits from any supermarket. Jobs a good'n

Btw primarks long line vests got me all the way through pregnancy and were still good for breastfeeding after. They hold shape really well.

RebootYourEngine · 30/06/2019 18:33

I could have written your post. Although I am only 8 weeks and look massive. Fat not pregnant ☹️

Anyone know why your stomach can get bigger and clothes tighter but your weight doesn't move?

Wormentrude · 30/06/2019 18:33

I got some really good stuff from Amazon -Happy Mama were real favourites of mine.

GivenchyDahhling · 30/06/2019 18:37

I'm 27 weeks and I just got loads and loads from the Zara sale - they have loads of loose, floaty dresses that have plenty of room for bump and are all around £12/13 - I spent a couple of hundred pounds in the Knightsbridge store on Tuesday.

For example, I'm currently wearing [https://www.zara.com/uk/en/knotted-dress-p06050012.html?v1=13391321&v2=1293573 this]] which is also available in this colour. Another one I got was this

I would say it's hard to see exactly which ones are loose/floaty/stretchy without going into store as the models are so tiny, and Zara can be cut very small.

GivenchyDahhling · 30/06/2019 18:38

Sorry, first link should have been here

Fairyjuice · 30/06/2019 18:39

Thanks ladies, will check these out 👍

Reboot I think it's cos your stomach muscles relax. Mine did quite quickly with this pregnancy, even though I'm still jogging 3/4 times a week, and walking load on the days I don't jog.

My parents bought me 2 pairs of shorts from h&m and I got myself about 6 new pairs of leggings from Matalan in varying sizes from my usual 8 to 14.
I also bought a pair of mat trousers and 2 tops from New Look for work, but managed to wear my normal work dresses until I was about 24 weeks.
I've always been a fan of baggy tops so have pretty much lived in the same 10 tops I usually wear and the leggings going up with my bump getting bigger. Although this weekend I've literally been in underwear and a vest top on the sofa, too warm to wear real clothes.

You don't need to spend loads, I think all the above cost about £50 in total, the 2 pairs of shorts most expensive and my dad refused to let me pay for them myself.

Lastbustowhitehawk · 30/06/2019 18:40

H&M is great for basics and if you want one or two more special bits then I would really recommend Séraphine. It's pricy but I got a dress that made me feel lovely on those days when I otherwise felt like a whale! A lot of their stuff is suitable for nursing so you can get a bit more life out of it if you'll be breastfeeding.

EssentialHummus · 30/06/2019 18:41

Belly-Belt (Amazon does them) to keep you in your current trousers.

SisterA · 30/06/2019 18:52

I can really recommend the FlexiFit high waisted pants from M&S. they certainly were able to grow with me! And soooo soft. And of course I still wear them now even though baby is almost 7 months old.

Also I did get a few basics from ASOS which I still wear now - they had these big maternity slouchy t shirts which were good as baggy and a low enough scoop neck I just pull down for breastfeeding in.

RebootYourEngine · 30/06/2019 19:00

Fairyjuice yeah I think you are right. My stomach muscles have definitely gone on holiday.

I'm not used to it because with my first I had hyperemesis and didn't gain weight until the third trimester.

Hmmmbop · 30/06/2019 19:29

I bought a massive maternity bundle off Facebook marketplace for £30. Was at least 50 items. Everything that wasn't my style or didn't fit I sold on (and made a profit!) and was still left with enough to wear!

modgepodge · 30/06/2019 19:53

One thing I’d say is if you are planning to breastfeed, consider whether your maternity wear can double as nursing wear. I didn’t think about this at all, and none of mine was any good for Bf in public so I’ve had to buy loads of new stuff. (I know, you can just layer normal clothing and pull one top up and one top down but none of my pre pregnancy stuff fits plus I’m such a hot person, just the thought of wearing 2 T-shirts makes me sweat.)

Xyzzzzz · 30/06/2019 19:56

I’m 34 weeks and have survived with H&M maternity leggings and vest tops (2 pairs). I’ve also bought 2 dresses one from H&M and the other from Asda. Everything else I just bought my normal size from primark or have managed in my normal tops. I used to wear baggier clothing so that’s why.

Pinkfinkle · 30/06/2019 20:00

I always wore big black M&S knickers during pregnancy (and after birth too!). They’re fantastic. Comfortable, soft, 100% cotton and fit well over the bump at all stages.

Clothes wise eBay? I bought most of my maternity stuff second hand on there then still managed to sell it on after.

Fairyjuice · 30/06/2019 21:37

Thanks for the Zara tip Givenchy, I had been scared off by their horrendous maternity wear but just checked the normal stuff now and found a few loose bits I would deffo wear Smile

Interesting about Primark stretchy dresses, I wouldn't normally shop there as I find it hard to get stuff that fits properly (large of nork) but I know their stuff is super affordable so will have a look.

I have liked at bundles on eBay, but unfortunately there are none in my size at the moment that I Ike the style/look of. Will keep an eye out though!
