Floss, mouthwash and then brush teeth?

Tootytata · 29/06/2019 09:29

I'm going through dental treatment for gum disease at the moment Sad

I normally floss, then brush my teeth and then use mouthwash but recently I've started thinking that the mouthwash probably washes the fluoride (from the toothpaste) out of my mouth! So I've started to floss, use mouthwash and then brush my teeth.

Does anyone know the "correct" order to do things?! I'd like to improve the condition of my gums. I know I can't make them better but at least I can stop them from getting worse.

Also, if anyone has gum disease which toothpaste or mouthwash helped your condition?

Your dentist is the best person to ask surely?

AuntyMarysBigRedPants · 29/06/2019 09:31

Do not use mouthwash
Brush, floss, warm salt water

Baritriwsahys · 29/06/2019 09:32

Neither.

You are supposed to use mouthwash at a different time.

Tepe better than floss. If you have gum disease then floss is useless
Tepe can be done anytime of the day
Mouthwash is pretty coloured water but if you want to use it do that in the middle of the day

I’m a hygienist btw

Pipandmum · 29/06/2019 09:37

Interesting question do I googled it. And you’re right! The latest recommendation is to just spit after brushing - do not rinse with water or mouthwash. They suggest using mouthwash at a different time to brushing your teeth. And don’t use Cordysol for more than seven days as it stains.

Arewenearlythereyet1 · 29/06/2019 09:48

I have finally got my gum disease under control. I use inter dental brushes first, then dental tape, then brush with electric toothbrush Colgate total pro gum health toothpaste all twice a day. I originally used curasept mouthwash for about 2 months but not at same time as brushing etc. Also carry some inter dental brushes with me in case I eat anything likely to stick during the day. Don't rinse your mouth after brushing. Dental hygienist may also recommend they give your whole mouth or certain areas a deep clean it is really worth having it done..

Hanging around here as I'm not sure of the best order.
I have read that brushing after breakfast isn't ideal as enzymes released by chewing can make the tooth surface vulnerable to mechanical stresses by brushing.

Although, intuitively, brushing after meals seems right:

"Keep your happy smile
Sparkling clean and bright;
Brush after breakfast
And thing at night"
is something I was brought up on.

At the moment, I floss last thing at night and during the day if I feel something's stuck.
I brush 2 minutes in the morning. If I've forgotten my tablets pre-brushing I take them with water then "sloosh" with mouthwash (hoping that will replace the fluoride that the water has removed).

So I've started to floss, use mouthwash and then brush my teeth.

That seems logical if you want to include mouthwash. Flossing dislodges the debris; mouthwash rinses it out; brushing deals with accessible surfaces.

You are supposed to use mouthwash at a different time.

Genuine question born of ignorance: when?

Tootytata · 29/06/2019 10:40

Sorry, by floss I actually mean I use interdental brushes. So you're not supposed to use mouthwash before or after brushing teeth at night?

I'm currently using Corsodyl Daily mouthwash. My teeth is slightly stained but I thought that might be due to coffee drinking (I don't smoke).

Heatherjayne1972 - as a hygienist, I'd like to know what your daily dental routine is! (So I can copy it!)

But, but, mouthwash has fluoride in?

LaMarschallin · 29/06/2019 10:47

Your dentist is the best person to ask surely?

To be fair to the OP, substitute "doctor" for "dentist" and see how many posts you get.

TinselAngel · 29/06/2019 11:02

Is it the full strength Cordosyl mouthwash that you shouldn't use for more than 7 days or the daily stuff? My teeth have looked stained since starting to use the full strength Cordysyl and I hadn't realised this could why.

Also- doesn't Cordosyl toothpaste taste absolutely revolting? Shock

ColaFreezePop · 29/06/2019 11:11

I've always brushed before breakfast since I was a child and I don't have gum disease. I'm not lucky as I had to have teeth extracted and braces to get straighter teeth.

My DP who brushes after breakfast and admits his teeth are poor as he has root fillings, asked his dentist who said it didn't matter.

We then looked it up and it's either before or a minimum of 30 minutes after you eat to help protect tooth enamel in case you ate something acidic. The main thing though is to eat and drink less sugar including hidden sugars.

Gwenhwyfar · 29/06/2019 11:21

"Your dentist is the best person to ask surely?"

She'd have to pay for a consultation just to get an answer wouldn't she.

nicecuppaforme · 29/06/2019 11:30

@Gwenhwyfar would she? She's getting treatment anyway surely she can just so when she's there or at her 6 monthly check up. Or read one of the leaflets on gum disease / Oral hygiene probably sitting in the dentist reception.
Assuming she's in U.K. that is.

Gwenhwyfar · 29/06/2019 11:38

Six months is a long time to wait for an answer to a simple question. I would want to know now if it were me.
Also, people often forget their questions when hey're actually with the doctor or dentist. Personally, I can't even talk for most of the appointment.

nicecuppaforme · 29/06/2019 11:53

Op literally says in her first sentence that she's having treatment at the moment

starzig · 29/06/2019 11:58

I was told with a gun infection to mouthwash 30min after brushing. Think she said floss after brushing.

OhDiddums · 29/06/2019 12:24

Mouthwash should be used at a different time, if you're going to use it. Tbh I used to carry mouthwash everywhere and it made my staining worse so I rarely use it and staining has improved.

BayandBlonde · 29/06/2019 12:29

My dentist told me not to use mouthwash or rinse at all after brushing. Just spit out the excess toothpaste and the remaining will act as extra protection for your teeth

babysharkah · 29/06/2019 12:34

My senators told my kids not to rinse after brushing.

DrCoconut · 29/06/2019 16:11

The dental hospital recommended colgate total toothpaste and listerine mouthwash (the expensive gum health one not the cheaper ones). Also tepe brushes. After a professional deep clean I am much better with my gums now.

NeverPutAWetFootInABirkenstock · 29/06/2019 16:18

My dentist says only use mouthwash at times when you’re not brushing as it’s best to leave the toothpaste on the teeth. She recommends Corsodyl Daily (that’s the non-staining one).

ElizaPancakes · 29/06/2019 16:19

I’m surprised your dentist hasn’t already told you this.

Mine told me ages ago to only use mouthwash before brushing or at a different time. I had some surface cavities from brushing too hard, they’ve gone now as I’ve stopped rinsing after brushing.

I use warm water and mouthwash in a waterpik as I can’t use floss the brush using an electric toothbrush. I never brush straight after eating, you should leave at least half an hour between eating and toothbrushing to allow the enzymes in your saliva to work. I tend to brush before breakfast.

I have one filling from 20 years ago, my biggest issue is that I grind my teeth.

qj17 · 29/06/2019 16:25

Floss, brush. No rinsing. No wetting toothbrush first. Mouthwash at a time other than brushing eg when you get in from
Work.
