Just wondering really as very new to all of this. Newborn in next2me in our room. Temp currently showing as 27 degrees. Fan on high so blowing cool air but temp still showing on the fan as 27 degrees. Window open too... what can I do?? Everything online says it's too hot in here for the baby but I don't know how to cool it down!!

Cold water in front of the fan.

CottonSock · 28/06/2019 22:41

Try not to worry. Isn't the womb much warmer. It was 30 degrees plus when my dd born. She didn't notice as much as me

Napqueen1234 · 28/06/2019 22:42

Try not to stress. We had DD in the middle of a heatwave and I remember looking terrified at our glo egg bright red but no way to cool the room! Fan on (in room not directly on baby) thin sleepsuit (no vest) and don’t worry. Babies are born in much much hotter climates and they survive!

RLOU30 · 28/06/2019 22:43

This was my newborn last June. Room was 32 at night for weeks. I just put him in a nappy only and kept the fan blowing but not directly on him to move the air around. It's scary I know x

homemadegin · 28/06/2019 22:43

What is she wearing? How does she seem?

DD takes after dh and gets ridiculously hot very quickly. She gets cranky and won't settle. Strip to nappy or vest short sleeves no legs.

EnglishBreakfastTea · 28/06/2019 22:43

I had a newborn in Sydney and the night she came home her room was 32 - nothing I could do to cool it down - I did the same as you, made sure windows were open, fan on etc but there isn't much else you can do! As long as baby isn't all wrapped up and you're using breathable linen wraps/blankets then just keep an eye on them - I feel for you as I remember the worry x

CherryPavlova · 28/06/2019 22:45

Windows open, bowls of ice in room, limit clothing and bedding and don’t fret. Babies in India or Palestine survive much warmer environments.

donajimena · 28/06/2019 22:46

I had my first baby in July 2003. That summer was horrendous. I put him to bed in just a nappy. I put a muslin on him when it got a bit cooler towards dawn. I just used it as a sheet.

riotlady · 28/06/2019 22:47

Try not to worry too much about all the online advice. Remember people in hot countries have babies all the time and they don’t all have air con!

Make sure not to overdress baby- nappy and vest will do, no blankets- and you’ll be fine :) if they are on formula you can offer them a little bit of cooled boiled water to drink, if you’re breastfeeding they should be fine on breast milk.

ItchySeveredFoot · 28/06/2019 22:48

I've just said this on another thread but a good way to cool down your house is to open your loft hatch to let the heat out.

BertieBotts · 28/06/2019 22:49

Fans just cool people, they don't cool rooms. Unless you put it next to the window to draw in cool air (will only work if there is airflow to let the hot air escape)

Mostly relax, babies are born in hot countries too and they don't all melt. Put her to bed in just a vest with no coverings. Check her to see if she's sweaty or feels cool. Don't worry about what you can't change. Don't put a fan directly on her as this isn't advised.

@ItchySeveredFoot

Genius ! Thanks

MmeBufo · 28/06/2019 22:52

It was very hot when my second child was born. Baking. I did worry at first but he was a short happy as Larry! I kept him in just his nappy, lightly wrapped a flat cotton cot sheet in the day. I think I had him in a vest and sheet at night.

So. Make sure he's taking plenty of milk, keep an eye on his temperature and keep him in the same room as you. He should be just fine. 27 is pretty standard fair in many parts of the world. Still, If you Feel that he doesn't seem 'right' at any point then be sure too seek medical advice.

Hothothott · 28/06/2019 22:57

Hadn't bought any vests. I thought short sleeve bodysuits were the same thing. Got lots of them. Just ordered sleeveless vests to be here tomorrow. Feeling useless here!!

There was a heatwave the summer DD was born, she slept in just a nappy for several weeks. We had a fan on rotate in the room as well, she was nearest the window, which was wide open, so I think she probably had the coolest spot in the room. It was still about 30° most nights. Unbearable.

Wet towel hung over an open window (so like a blind)

MmeBufo · 28/06/2019 23:22

Short sleeved bodysuits are fine. A centimetre or two of sleeve really doesn't matter.

If you want to you can trim the sleeves off a short sleeved vest, the fabric won't fray.

Also. Do have a cup of tea, it's very cooling in the heat.

MmeBufo · 28/06/2019 23:24

Trim the sleeve itself without cutting into the seam that holds the sleeve to the body. Snip the corner off the seam in the sleeve too, just to make sure it's properly comfy.

PickAChew · 28/06/2019 23:25

Short sleeved bodysuit is fine. Baby needs a little bit more coverage than you do to stay comfortable, anyhow. If they do feel hot and clammy, at any point, just a nappy is OK.

nicecuppaforme · 28/06/2019 23:26

Cut the sleeves off the body suits.
Offer lots of feeds.
Hang wet towels in the room.
Don't panic.

The baby lying on your bare chest just in its nappy can regulate temperature too.

nicecuppaforme · 28/06/2019 23:27

Tomorrow keep all of the curtains shut during the day then when the sun goes down open them and the windows wide.

Whisky2014 · 28/06/2019 23:30

24deg is too hot so at 27 the baby shouldn't be in that room or at the very least wearing a nappy only
Can you open more windows and get a draft thoroughfare going on?
