Weaning but baby can't sit up yet

DD is almost 6 months but can't sit up. She's nowhere near sitting up. There's nothing wrong with her, she just can't sit. Sonu delay weaning until she can? How long can I delay for? I didn't have this issue with DS!

I thought it was able to sit up aided. So in a high chair for example. Dd couldn’t sit up totally unaided at 6 months.

moreismore · 28/06/2019 19:31

If she’s nearly there I’d just wait a couple more weeks. It won’t do her any harm.

Flywheel · 28/06/2019 19:32

I don't think you should delay. My dd1 didn't sit til she was much much older (sn) but she was still weaned at 6 months. It's important to start exposing them to different flavours and textures. I used a bumbo when dd was little (are they still around?). Due to her delays she also couldn't chew or manage thicker food so blw was out, but she enjoyed purees.

Has she shown any signs of readiness? That would be key to deciding for men

Hmmmbop · 28/06/2019 19:37

Greenolivesorblackolives it's sit unaided, but she can't sit aided particularly either.

I'm aware that gut maturity and sitting ability are closely linked which is why I don't want to wean her until she is sitting but I'm also mindful on the research about delayed weaning and increased allergies! It's a bit of a dilemma!

I think I'll wait. I did blw with DS and will do the same this time as it worked really well for him.

No don’t delay just hold her or get a padded high chair insert.
My DD was born at 28 weeks but was still weaned just before 6 months old so she was 3.5 months corrected. She was tiny but their iron reserves will start depleting.
Speak to your health visitor if you’re concerned but we had to hold her and purée feed for quite a while.

KMoKMo · 28/06/2019 19:40

Please speak to your health visitor or GP. Please don’t rely on advice on a forum.

moreismore · 28/06/2019 20:41

You are correct in the link between sitting unaided, loss of tongue thrust reflex and development of pincer grip as signs of readiness to wean. This will very between babies. There is no rush at this stage. As an aside Bumpo seats aren’t great for hip, spine and core muscle development and who wants to eat bent over like that?!

Hmmmbop · 28/06/2019 20:52

Baritriwsahys she has the hand-eye coordination. I haven't tested the tongue thrust reflex yet.

I don't think there's any need to wait until they can sit unaided, sitting steadily in a high chair is fine.

Waiting much past 6 months could potentially cause issues with food intolerances and low iron.

DS didn't sit well unaided until he was 9 months. By that age he was eating very well, crawling etc.

Every other milestone was bang on time, he was just on the later side for sitting unaided.

nicecuppaforme · 28/06/2019 21:09

As far as I can see. The seated position is a safety thing for eating so sitting steadily in a high chair without slumping and having good head control is perfectly fine.

Hmmmbop · 28/06/2019 21:10

nicecuppaforme she can't sit at all. She just flops over. Whether in a high chair or not. As you say, all other milestones are bang on, just not sitting!

I'll wait until she's 6months exactly and then take a look and see.

Honestly trust your gut feeling.

Personally I would wait until she can sit unaided and do lots of tummy time in the meantime to help her gain her strength.

nicecuppaforme · 28/06/2019 21:13

Definitely wait until she can sit without slumping as otherwise she could choke.

Does she do plenty of tummy time? You can help strengthen her core by lying her on her back, letting her grab your fingers and help her pull herself up to sitting (with her doing the work iyswim?)

Hmmmbop · 28/06/2019 21:17

Yeah plenty of tummy time and baby sit-ups. Her head control is great and her core seems good, except for sitting.

DS didn't roll until 9months, didn't walk until 20months but sat up at 4. I just make wonky babies!

DS wasn’t great at sitting until about 10 months. We just wedged him in an ikea chair with the cushion which worked fine.

RiddleyW · 28/06/2019 21:20

Ha ha yes I make them wonky too. DS didn’t walk until about 20 months and didn’t jump till about 2.5!

nicecuppaforme · 28/06/2019 21:22

Aren't all babies wonky? Grin

babysharkah · 28/06/2019 21:35

We had to wean Prem dts early because of reflux. They couldn't sit. We fed them purée in their bouncy chairs.

blackcat86 · 28/06/2019 21:45

DD is 10 months and is only just sitting confidently. We started weaning at 5.5 months and she is doing very well with food. Those who delayed in our nct group or fussed about with when to give which food have had babies who have started losing a lot of weight and become a concern. I wouldn't delay especially if they're showing an interest in food. Just use cushions or whatever to ensure they are safely propped up.

StillMedusa · 28/06/2019 23:23

When I had my kids they were weaned at 4 months (27 years ago!) None were sitting and we weaned them in bouncy chairs. I know guidelines changed to 6 months years ago but babies don't change...

My youngest couldn't until he was past 1 (special needs) but we still weaned him around 6 months because he needed the iron.

Carpetburns · 29/06/2019 06:41

I thought that you were supposed to wean at 6 months, regardless.

Sleepyblueocean · 29/06/2019 07:50

Ds didn't sit unaided until 18 months so was fed in a supportive high chair from 6 months. He didn't put things in his mouth until around 2 so was spoon feeding only.
If your ds can't sit unsupported and this goes on much longer, I think you should consider seeing your HV or GP.

Hmmmbop · 29/06/2019 14:12

Carpetburns no, they need to be around 6 months and show the 3 signs of readiness, the first of which is sitting unaided.

Sleepyblueocean normal sitting milestone bis 4-7 months so I've got a bit before I need to worry.
