Weaning but baby can't sit up yet

DD is almost 6 months but can't sit up. She's nowhere near sitting up. There's nothing wrong with her, she just can't sit. Sonu delay weaning until she can? How long can I delay for? I didn't have this issue with DS!

People on here get way too invested in the guidelines... theyre just that... GUIDELINES!!
For the record, its sit up aided, eg high chair/bumbo. The majority of babies cant sit unaided until 6-7 months but delatung weaning wont help them build the strength to do it. There wont be any lasting damage from weaning when shes sitting a bit shlumped. Just give the kid some food

Mayday19 · 29/06/2019 16:43

I suspect the Op is already feeding her child..

SparklesandFlowers · 29/06/2019 16:47

DS can sit up and hold his head, just not unaided. He's fine in the high chair though, he doesn't slump against the side or the straps and was clearly desperate for food from about 5 months. We started weaning just before 6 months and we're a few weeks in - he loves it!

The nhs and unicef guidelines are that the baby should be able to support their head and stay in a sitting position. I've always taken that to mean that if they are comfortable in a padded out highchair (not slumping to one side) then providing that they are showing the other signs of readiness, they are ok to start weaning, even if they are not able to sit unaided.
The last child I weaned wasn't sitting unaided until well last seven months but was ready to eat and enthusiastically exploring food at six months whilst sitting in a high chair with the Ikea inflatable cushion.

TeamUnicorn · 29/06/2019 18:15

My DS didn't sit unaided until 11months, he couldn't really sit aided either at 6 months. He didn't really eat until 11.5 months.

I'm not saying do or don't, but sometimes they simply won't.

I suspect the Op is already feeding her child..

Why do you suspect that?

nicecuppaforme · 29/06/2019 18:17

@Hmmmbop the guidelines don't actually say sitting unaided

Mayday19 · 29/06/2019 18:28

Because otherwise the baby would be dead. Milk is food.

nicecuppaforme · 29/06/2019 18:38

The thread is specifically about weaning...but you know that anyway

firstimemamma · 29/06/2019 18:43

I started at 5 months 1 week. Was very keen to start at 6 months but ds had other ideas and was showing loads of signs so I sat him on my lap and spoon-fed him. This lasted a few weeks and worked fine. When he turned 6 months not only had he mastered sitting up but we'd bought a high chair and he sat in that just fine from then on.

All babies are different though and I really would get proper advice from a professional e.g. hv.

Mayday19 · 29/06/2019 19:34

I was responding to the poster who said "just give the baby some food" - as if he was being starved by his mother!

Hmmmbop · 29/06/2019 20:41

She's not starving!

She can't sit at all, slumps down and falls to the side and forwards.

As I said, I'll wait until she is 6 months and then see.

I've already spoken to my HV. She's shit so I won't be following her advice (which was start weaning on baby rice and give extra water during the heat (despite DD being ebf on demand). I trust my own research much more than her 'professional advice'.

I agree your HV advice is shit! Sounds like you’re confident in what you’re doing. I’d continue to follow your own instincts. Sure she’ll be sitting up and ready soon enough.
