Urgent - How many units is 1.5g of alcohol?

I can't believe it.

I've had a bit of a day, my washing machine is broke and staying that way until Thurs, I've had the boiler service from hell and I thought I would treat myself to a gluten free mousse from Tesco. After I had finished, I thought it had a little 'kick' so I checked the ingredient list, and alcohol is included. The very nice man at Tesco said that the mousse had 1.5g of alcohol in.

I think that's less than a unit, and it's @ an hour and a half before I need to do the school run, but can someone reassure me?

Memo to self - check ingredients with care!

10ml of alcohol is 1 unit I believe

SarahAndQuack · 28/06/2019 13:23

Well, it depends on the alcohol, doesn't it?!

In any case, I am pretty certain you're safe to drive. Grin

Grumpbum123 · 28/06/2019 13:24

Or maybe is 10g to one unit

CheesePuffTheMagicDragon · 28/06/2019 13:26

On average, people should burn through a unit per hour, obviously that depends on your weight and metabolism, but I'm sure you're fine. I highly doubt there was a whole unit of alcohol in your mousse!

dementedpixie · 28/06/2019 13:26

That's a tiny amount. Its normally 1 hour for each unit of alcohol to leave the body so you'll be fine anyway

ThighsRelief · 28/06/2019 13:26

I wonder how much alcohol you'd have to eat to be over the limit. Family size sherry trifle? Enormous box of liquer chocolates? I'm going to find out.

dementedpixie · 28/06/2019 13:28

Apparently in the uk 8g = 1 unit

moreismore · 28/06/2019 13:28

My sister was once refused liqueur chocolates without ID ‘in case she fed them to a baby’ Grin
OP you’re fine to drive

Meckity1 · 28/06/2019 13:28

Please don't judge me, but I also had two mini cheesecakes (it's been a tough week) and they also had alcohol in the ingredient list!

Who knew I had to check cheesecake for booze?

I'll probably be okay, as it takes @ an hour to process one unit, right? And surely it won't be more than one unit.

Thank you for the help. I appreciate it. Also, I hope it's a warning! Booze in gluten free cheesecake!!!

And when I make trifle or home made mousse, it is definitely not safe for drivers, but I thought it would be labelled!

I've just noticed the tiny 'contains alcohol' over the 'vegetarian' symbol. I feel a numpty.

I only passed my test in March, so I need my wits about me!

25ml of alcohol = 1 unit

This is a negligible amount in your chocolate mouse. The alcohol is part of the flavour. You will be absolutely fine to drive. A glass of orange juice will contain the same level.

Meckity1 · 28/06/2019 13:34

@NorthernSpirit that's reassuring, but I thought that was like a measure of eg vodka, not the pure alcohol?

Also now looking sideways at the orange juice which is the nearest I get to fruit most days.

I had the same panic about tiramisu. That shit can put you over the limit apparently. Is it the fumes and breath test or something?

MyOpinionIsValid · 28/06/2019 13:40

In food, alcohol normally cooks or evaporates out.

Meckity1 · 28/06/2019 13:41

@gamerchick - It's worrying me. I'm a new driver and there are some iffy corners and a roundabout where if there is a gap you go for it like a ferret up a trouser leg. I also go past a lot of schools letting out, so you need to have your wits about you. What if I get it wrong?

My poor son may end up getting the bus, over an hour and there have been problems.

Meckity1 · 28/06/2019 13:42

@MyOpinionIsValid That's kind of reassuring, but the nice man at Tesco (who was actually lovely and very calm) said that the alcohol was there as a preservative. So I suppose it would still be 'active'.

Off to get several gallons of water.

SouthernComforts · 28/06/2019 13:43

Give over. You've had a chocolate mousse not a shot of sambuca.

SpottedGingham · 28/06/2019 13:44

Book yourself into Alcoholics Anonymous pronto. Hmm

FFS sometimes I really wonder at how fucking gormless some people are.

Meckity1 · 28/06/2019 13:44

@SouthernComforts - I know, but there's also the cheesecakes and one sniff of the barmaid's apron and I'm singing a song about a goblin.

I know I'm getting myself into a state, but I can't believe that I didn't realise!

You're being ridiculous.

BarbaraofSevillle · 28/06/2019 13:50

I once got IDd for a sherry trifle in M&S. I suppose the 'contains alcohol' warning is more for recovering alcoholics or people who avoid alcohol for religious reasons so neither consume it accidentally.

However, I would hope that you'd need more than a massive binge at the pudding counter to be over the limit but it's an interesting question.

Sherry trifle, tirimisui, liqueur chocolates, christmas cake, and the OPs mousse could all have a splash in it, and let's face it, we've all poured it into a home made dessert with a slightly heavier hand than the recipe may suggest.

BarbaraofSevillle · 28/06/2019 13:52

If you are breath tested, they will ask you if you've consumed any alcohol in the last 20 minutes, because that can skew the result even if you haven't been drinking - used mouth wash, had some truffles etc.

mindutopia · 28/06/2019 13:52

It wouldn’t even occur to me to not do the school run after eating a pudding. Confused I’m pretty sure it’s not possible to be over the limit on that. Just go get your kids and stop worrying.

Meckity1 · 28/06/2019 13:52

@BarbaraofSevillle I am a lightweight when it comes to booze, but I suppose I'm being overcautious. When I make coffee jellies (Mrs Beeton recipe, set strong coffee and rum with gelatin and serve with whipped cream) it's for non-drivers only, as I don't stint on the rum, so I suppose I'm identifying with that.
