Urgent - How many units is 1.5g of alcohol?

I can't believe it.

I've had a bit of a day, my washing machine is broke and staying that way until Thurs, I've had the boiler service from hell and I thought I would treat myself to a gluten free mousse from Tesco. After I had finished, I thought it had a little 'kick' so I checked the ingredient list, and alcohol is included. The very nice man at Tesco said that the mousse had 1.5g of alcohol in.

I think that's less than a unit, and it's @ an hour and a half before I need to do the school run, but can someone reassure me?

Memo to self - check ingredients with care!

On average, people should burn through a unit per hour, obviously that depends on your weight and metabolism, but I'm sure you're fine. I highly doubt there was a whole unit of alcohol in your mousse!

That's a tiny amount. Its normally 1 hour for each unit of alcohol to leave the body so you'll be fine anyway

I wonder how much alcohol you'd have to eat to be over the limit. Family size sherry trifle? Enormous box of liquer chocolates? I'm going to find out.

Please don't judge me, but I also had two mini cheesecakes (it's been a tough week) and they also had alcohol in the ingredient list!

Who knew I had to check cheesecake for booze?

I'll probably be okay, as it takes @ an hour to process one unit, right? And surely it won't be more than one unit.

Thank you for the help. I appreciate it. Also, I hope it's a warning! Booze in gluten free cheesecake!!!

And when I make trifle or home made mousse, it is definitely not safe for drivers, but I thought it would be labelled!

I've just noticed the tiny 'contains alcohol' over the 'vegetarian' symbol. I feel a numpty.

I only passed my test in March, so I need my wits about me!

25ml of alcohol = 1 unit

This is a negligible amount in your chocolate mouse. The alcohol is part of the flavour. You will be absolutely fine to drive. A glass of orange juice will contain the same level.

@NorthernSpirit that's reassuring, but I thought that was like a measure of eg vodka, not the pure alcohol?

Also now looking sideways at the orange juice which is the nearest I get to fruit most days.

I had the same panic about tiramisu. That shit can put you over the limit apparently. Is it the fumes and breath test or something?

In food, alcohol normally cooks or evaporates out.

@gamerchick - It's worrying me. I'm a new driver and there are some iffy corners and a roundabout where if there is a gap you go for it like a ferret up a trouser leg. I also go past a lot of schools letting out, so you need to have your wits about you. What if I get it wrong?

My poor son may end up getting the bus, over an hour and there have been problems.

@MyOpinionIsValid That's kind of reassuring, but the nice man at Tesco (who was actually lovely and very calm) said that the alcohol was there as a preservative. So I suppose it would still be 'active'.

Off to get several gallons of water.

I once got IDd for a sherry trifle in M&S. I suppose the 'contains alcohol' warning is more for recovering alcoholics or people who avoid alcohol for religious reasons so neither consume it accidentally.

However, I would hope that you'd need more than a massive binge at the pudding counter to be over the limit but it's an interesting question.

Sherry trifle, tirimisui, liqueur chocolates, christmas cake, and the OPs mousse could all have a splash in it, and let's face it, we've all poured it into a home made dessert with a slightly heavier hand than the recipe may suggest.

If you are breath tested, they will ask you if you've consumed any alcohol in the last 20 minutes, because that can skew the result even if you haven't been drinking - used mouth wash, had some truffles etc.

It wouldn’t even occur to me to not do the school run after eating a pudding. Confused I’m pretty sure it’s not possible to be over the limit on that. Just go get your kids and stop worrying.

@BarbaraofSevillle I am a lightweight when it comes to booze, but I suppose I'm being overcautious. When I make coffee jellies (Mrs Beeton recipe, set strong coffee and rum with gelatin and serve with whipped cream) it's for non-drivers only, as I don't stint on the rum, so I suppose I'm identifying with that.
