Is my neighbour a little bit bonkers or.......

My neighbour gave birth to her first baby 2 weeks ago. I've always got on really well with them, so i bought a little gift for her and baby.
This morning she was in her garden at the same time as me and after exchanging pleasantries, she invited me in ( i have never actually been inside her home before ) to see baby ( ooh she's gorgeous ) so i popped round with the gift, which she was delighted with.
She has a labrador dog, who is lovely, very well trained and looked after.
However, it was wearing sports socks on each paw / leg!!
i was, well, surprised. I actually asked her why it was wearing socks, she replied that she has always made it wear socks in the house which she changes and washes daily, but he has to wear grey ones so she doesn't get them and her husbands mixed up.
When the dog wants to go outside they are removed, then put back on when it goes back inside.
I didn't quite know what to say, i mean, what could i say??
Does anyone else do this with their dog?? I don't.
Is my neighbour bonkers or is it a new trend that i'm not aware of?
My head hurts now trying to work it out and my sides hurt from laughing.

Note. She doesn't come across as bonkers normally, she and her husband are very nice.

@runoutofnamechanges Someone upthread suggested a gift for the husband.
They look just the thing
Imagine the confused look? Grin

I don't want to sound flippant @federationrep but if he ate an entire sock then at least his poo would be ready wrapped and his bum wiped on exit Grin

My mum's dog had to wear socks, just normal ones, as it had a skin condition and they prevented the dog from licking the legs so much that they became sore. Perhaps this dog had the same?

I'm afraid not Dogbert. socks always come back up, after a few days, and are completely rank. Apart from the time he did it right before he was due to go to the pet hotel. Then it was £50odd for the vet to give him an emetic and make him sick.
Maybe I should suggest socks to the pet hotel (it really is just kennels) or maybe they should have white towelling slippers and matching robes.

DogbertDogglesworth · 27/06/2019 15:29

To wear round the spa pool while the waiter feeds them Bonio @federationrep Grin

That reminds me of an idea that i had a while ago which made my husband look Confused at me.
There are a lot of dog owners around me and a closed down launderette. I mentioned that it could be turned into a self service dog wash place. Like individual shower cubicle type things where you can take your dog, select a programme and put the money in the slot to start it.
My husband looked at me like i had grown another head. Grin

Note. This is my copywritten idea, so no pinching. Grin

Ask her how she keeps them on him? My Rusell has a poorly foot that I need to stop him getting to but he hates the buster collar.

I tried a baby sock but short of duct tape it wouldn't stay on!

runoutofnamechanges,

Those are quite the most disturbing things I've clapped eyes on all day

averylongtimeago · 27/06/2019 16:10

When my elderly Goldie found it difficult to stand on our tiled and wooden floors, I got her some grippy socks. I wish I had known about the proper dog one as she ended up with bright pink Barbi ones as they were on special offer at B&M home bargains.
She lay there and let me put them on. Then painstakingly took them off one by one and ate them.
She didn't talk to me for several days and we resorted to a lot of non slip mats to form "Goldie paths " from bowl to basket to fire to backdoor.

OhJustElfOff · 27/06/2019 16:11

There's a place near me where you can wash your dog. You put money in a slot and it fires up the little shower thing while they stand in a sort of sink. It's semi genius except for it's definitely driving distance from all the decent dog walks here and all the houses (only about five minute drive but on fast rural roads with no pavements) and there's nowhere to dry the dog afterwards. And nowhere to buy them fresh socks.

CigarsofthePharoahs · 27/06/2019 16:16

Surely when the dog goes for a walk it wears sandals over the socks for that proper British Summer look. Knotted hanky on its head?
Perhaps a string vest and some khaki over sized shorts.

DogbertDogglesworth · 27/06/2019 16:18

@averylongtimeago that had me in fits, sorry Grin

@OhJustElfOff that's the kind of thing i mean. There are lots of dog walks near me, and a lot of dog owners, so just for the dog owners alone it would be more convenient than doing it in your own bathroom so to speak.
It wouldn't be like Wallace's invention with the sheep bath.

It's a symptom of OCD. She most likely has a fear of the dog bringing germs into the house. I only say/know this as I was watching an episode of obsessive compulsive cleaners last night and the lady did the exact same thing. It may be a normal habit for her, or more worryingly with the new baby she may be experiencing some extreme postnatal anxiety

DogbertDogglesworth · 27/06/2019 16:19

Stop it @CigarsofthePharoahs Grin Grin Grin

I've not seen that programme @mawof3soontobe is it like How clean is your house? i used to like that.
You could be right although, perhaps she is an obsessive.
Lord knows how she will go on when the baby starts throwing food around.
Hmm, that wall could do with some alphabet spaghetti ..Splat!

Yes it's like that but more up to date and addictive. Im due a baby in six days and not sleeping at night so I watch it on YouTube to stop myself getting the hoover out at 3am Grin

runoutofnamechanges · 27/06/2019 16:30

@CampfireZen

They have a whole Noah's Ark of animal paw/hoof socks available, including camel, if you fancy some camel toes.

NannyRed · 27/06/2019 16:36

Bonkers? I think this woman is a genius

Absolutely @BabyWitch, abso-bloody-lately.

Anyone who’s cleaned up after a muddy lab will agree.

DogbertDogglesworth · 27/06/2019 16:42

@DogbertDogglesworth just saw this. So apt for the pet hotel spa days. Hope they don't lose their slippers in the mud

LittleLongDog · 27/06/2019 20:56

@CampfireZen I know loads of people who do that for their dog when in season. IMO it’s much better then dog period on your sofa/floors/bed!

CampfireZen · 28/06/2019 16:39

runoutofnamechanges,

There are no words...
