What non offensive foods/snacks can I eat on a train journey?

MorinKhuur · 27/06/2019 11:33

I have an approximately 5-6 hour train journey to make soon. I need some ideas of things I can take to eat during the journey without offending my fellow passengers. I can't eat in the morning as I can't bear to look at food before 12, and I can't really eat on arrival as I'm going to a concert and want to get as close to the front as possible so no real time to stop and eat. Although there are some stalls at the place I don't want to be spending time in queues.

Any food/snack ideas would be appreciated. TIA

Egg
Fish
Peanuts
Nuts
Curry

Grin Fire

The OP also needs a really big bag of crisps and some sweets with really rustly wrappers.

Get some sandwiches and don’t stress about it. People eat on trains, it’s fine.

Plus an extra large soft drink and a window seat so you have to get up to go to the toilet about three times.

KurriKurri · 27/06/2019 12:22

I wouldn't worry- you'll go along with a small square of bread and butter and a grape, and find you are sitting next to someone who has brought a prawn subway made out of a whole fench stick, a family sized bag of pickled onion monster munch and a luminous blue drink that makes them burp once a minute for the rest of the journey.

CORSACORSA · 27/06/2019 12:23

Be wary of nuts. Been on a train before and the tannoy announcement said that someone with a severe nut allergy was in board and no nuts could be eaten

managedmis · 27/06/2019 12:24

Smoked mackerel?

P1nkHeartLovesCake · 27/06/2019 12:26

Can an adult not work this out? Do you really need mumsnet to tell you what to eat?

What do you normally eat for lunch take that?

Apolloanddaphne · 27/06/2019 12:27

Anything you want. I have eaten all sort of sandwiches on a train including egg and tuna. My lunch, my choice.

mouldyhousemouldylife · 27/06/2019 12:36

@P1nkHeartLovesCake people are allowed to ask for suggestions and nobody forced you to reply. Hmm

youngestisapsycho · 27/06/2019 12:39

A sandwich and some crisps... normal lunch food?

needsomesleepy · 27/06/2019 12:41

alt168 · 27/06/2019 12:43

I work with a guy whose normal lunch is broccoli rice and tuna. If you're him, take anything but your normal lunch.

BonAccordSpur · 27/06/2019 12:47

Really worrying about thisHmm
Iove boiled eggs,pre-shelled or cheese&onion&couldnt give a f@ck if anyones delicate nostrils are offendedGrin

Constance1234 · 27/06/2019 12:53

Is there some big backstory you are planning to reveal here OP to explain why you don't know what to eat on a train?

mouldyhousemouldylife · 27/06/2019 12:55

@Constance1234 maybe they're being considerate and don't want to eat anything that smells but also wants ideas on something that's not a dull salad? I'm pretty sure they could think of something but it doesn't kill anyone to offer some interesting suggestions. Is there a big backstory about why you can't comprehend that?

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 27/06/2019 12:56

I would recommend a M&S picnic - that is my go-to, for train journeys (and one of the things I look forward to most, about a long train trip).

They do a selection of nice salads, drinks, and other snacks - I particularly like the king prawns with a thousand island sauce to dip them in. If you do get a salad - don't do what I did last time, and forget to pick up a fork - I had to throw away my cracked wheat salad because there was no way I could eat it without utensils.

PetrichorRain · 27/06/2019 12:56

Egg mayonaise sandwiches, followed by pickled onions. Drink something fizzy so you can burp into people's faces.

Constance1234 · 27/06/2019 13:00

@mouldyhousemouldylife But it's such a no brainer - how can one not know what food smells and what doesn't in a confined space? It's nice you are such a kind person to defend the OP so much though, yet you haven't made any suggestions for them yourself..

notatwork · 27/06/2019 13:03

ciabatta, with antipasti, mozzarella balls with sun dried tomatoes and a miniature bottle of red wine. Buy these from M+S at the station.
You're going to a gig: make the picnic part of the day out!

S1naidSucks · 27/06/2019 13:06

Just when you thought you had experienced evil in your life, you’re proven wrong.

Egg AND tuna! You need to see a priest immediately, because you’re definitely possessed! 😈 Shock

museumum · 27/06/2019 13:07

People eat on long distance trains. They even sell food don’t you know? Including hot food.

Mumnsnet threads often bitch about people eating but in real life it’s utterly normal on any long distance service.

BarbaraofSevillle · 27/06/2019 13:08

how can one not know what food smells and what doesn't in a confined space

Well I actually have quite a poor sense of smell and on many occasions DP has complained about 'a big whiff' in the fridge that I can't smell.

He insists that brie like cheese absolutely fucking honks, but it smells like almost nothing to me (the same piece that we're both stood there sniffing, not the difference between something that is chilled and unripe vs one that's room temperature and oozy).

Constance1234 · 27/06/2019 13:10

@BarbaraofSevillle That's what I meant when I was asking if there was a back story. If the OP olafactory issues then the their question takes on a new dimension.

TheCatThatDanced · 27/06/2019 13:11

agreed with museumum - there wouldn't be cafes/mini supermarkets etc (Little Waitrose etc) at mainline and local train stations unless they wanted people not to eat on trains.

I would avoid fish - but if you want to eat a tuna fish sandwich go ahead - just dispose of the packaging soon after.

Beware though, if you do want to buy food and drink on trains - their contactless system is often not working so bring cash for that.
