Just been called a tax dodger!

My colleague just called me a tax dodger and technically he was right.

I have size 3 feet and buy children's footwear because it is cheaper. The reason it is cheaper is children's shoes don't attract VAT.

Please tell me I am not the only white collar criminal among us?

I recently cheated the government out of £25, after buying a pair of children's trainers.

I also wear children's clothes sometimes. Then when anyone compliments my outfit, I have to shamefully admit I'm actually a massive tax dodger.

jackparlabane · 26/06/2019 11:13

My mum used to drag me shopping when I was 13/14 as she was too embarrassed to try clothes on in the children's department otherwise. (cringe)

She also wore my outgrown school shirts for years (double cringe) - at least now they've been demoted to garden in.

WhentheRabbitsWentWild · 26/06/2019 11:24

loll You tax dodger you Grin

When I was in my late teens I bought clothing from kids ranges as they fitted me and were tax free . Could possibly do the same now but I just stick to regular adult 10s or 8s . Nothing wrong in what you are doing OP . Wish I had such small feet . DM has a tiny size 3 shoe.

WhereForArtThouBray · 26/06/2019 11:26

I am too fat these days for children's clothes but at 5ft 2 I used to be able to share DSs Onsies and comfy pants.

Same height as me OP

Nowdays I can fit in my 17 year sold sons tracksuit bottoms (if I wanted too, I put them on in error one morning) as he has a similar build to me .

amusedbush · 26/06/2019 11:34

I have several pairs of Adidas trainers which are identical to the ladies version but half the price. I also paid £35 for Hunter wellies from the kids section.

New Look teen shoes are also cheaper and tend to have a much lower heel than the adults ones.

bengalcat · 26/06/2019 11:39

Me too I’m a size 37 shoe and especially like kids boots

INeedNewShoes · 26/06/2019 11:41

I have Age 13 waterproof trousers and jacket from Millets as well as a kid's sleeping bag. I also have a much coveted age 13 dress from Macy's!

I'm now a size 12 (real size 12 rather than modesty size 12) and wider hipped since having DD but I incredibly still fit into these Age 13 things.

This will only get easier as kids keep getting bigger and the shops adjust their sizes accordingly.

On the flip side though, finding trousers that will stay up on my slender waisted DD is a trial!

WhereForArtThouBray · 26/06/2019 12:02

Oh I am a 12 edging on a 14 these days if I am honest. Maybe the age 13 or age 14 stuff will fit me after all.

notacooldad · 26/06/2019 12:07

I have been wearing my sons hoodies and t shirts that I bought him when he was 12 ( he is 20 now) Am I dodging because I should buy (my own )clothes ?🤣🤣

Squirrel26 · 26/06/2019 12:19

If anyone is planning on using their ill-gotten gains for going on holiday, can I recommend children’s ski goggles? Way less expensive then the grownup version.

Soubriquet · 26/06/2019 12:24

I buy children’s clothes

13-14 years usually fits me

Hmmmbop · 26/06/2019 13:16

ComtesseDeSpair happened to us twice with gas, in 2 separate properties. The first we kept giving meter readings and getting bills which we paid but they kept insisting my meter readings were wrong. They kept giving me refunds after the meter reading fella came round - turned out the wrong meter number had been registered to our house when it had been put it. I argued to pay for around 6 months after we moved out before I gave up.

The house we then moved in to, I kept trying to sign up to gas companies who insisted my meter didn't exist. After 3 years the national grid for gas (can't remember their name) eventually sent someone out to me after I kept insisting I DID have gas. They signed the meter off and wrote off the 3 years free gas we'd got.

Rainbowknickers · 26/06/2019 13:43

I buy 90% of my clothes in charity shops so avoid vat there-but I make up for it with my clown feet
It’s all swings and roundabouts really

DonkeyHohtay · 26/06/2019 13:45

Better shop MIL to the fuzz as she's tiny and a lot of her clothes are from the M&S children's ranges.

PoppadomPeach · 26/06/2019 13:58

@WhereForArtThouBray I'm the same, same size tooBlush we'll share a cell OP.

I bought some New Balance and some Gazelles in the JD sale on Saturday. £30 each.

PoppadomPeach · 26/06/2019 14:00

Plus children's clothes. Like a PP. Socks, knickers, leggings, sometimes jeans.

AquaPris · 26/06/2019 14:02

@ComtesseDeSpair my sisters neighbours had that once... unfortunately after several years it turned out she had been billed for their water and owed £1.8k.. they refused to pay 🙁

soulrider · 26/06/2019 14:02

I buy girls swimming costumes - half the price of adult ones

nickymanchester · 26/06/2019 14:05

I’m self employed and the vast majority of my clients pay me in cash. The number of my own clients that assume I don’t pay tax is astounding!

A friend of ours is a painter and decorator and he has exactly the same experience as well.

CassianAndor · 26/06/2019 14:08

I buy kids converse because they are wider than adult converse, and because I CAN MWAHAHAHAHAHA.

Many years ago I bought some walking boots in a fairly upmarket outdoor leisure shop Snow and Rock. I ended up getting kids boots because they fit the best and were the most comfy (and indeed they are still going strong over 10 years later). My God, the woman serving me was sour-faced about it, I can only assume she was on commission. Never darkened their door again.

rollingpine · 26/06/2019 14:15

Nah, you're ok OP - that's not tax evasion, it is tax avoidance, which is legal.

MzHz · 26/06/2019 14:21

DS is 14 and still in a size 5

My ds is in a size 12.5 (men’s)

He’s not even 14 yo

MzHz · 26/06/2019 14:21

YA Soooo NBU

Carry on! 😂

hoodiemum · 26/06/2019 14:57

I used to wear kids' clothes a lot - adult clothes depts in my town rarely have anything that fits. But I have avoided kids' clothes since being chucked out of a kids' changing room at Debenhams by a shop assistant, backed up by a parent who said it was very creepy having me changing there (I was with my own kids at the time, who were also trying on clothes, in a private cubicle thing, doing nothing other than, you know, trying on clothes). Going 2 floors down to adult changing rooms to try on the kids' clothes is so much hassle when you're trying different sizes. All too mortifying. Have given up clothes shopping now except online.
